How Pipe Flanges, Gaskets, and Bolting Define a Leak-Free Piping System
A field-tested guide to flanged joints for oil & gas, marine, petrochemical, and power projects
In a flanged piping system, the pipe flanges you specify decide more than just how two pipe ends are bolted together. They determine the pressure class, the allowable temperature, the corrosion allowance, the maintenance interval, and ultimately whether the line will run leak-free for the next 20 to 30 years. A flange that is mismatched to its gasket, bolting, or mating pipe is the single most common root cause of fugitive emissions, hydrostatic test failures, and unplanned shutdowns.
Why the Joint Is the Weakest Link in Any Pipeline
Pipe spool fabrication has been refined to the point where the pipe itself is rarely the failure point. The flanged joint is. It combines five separate components — two flanges, one gasket, and a set of stud bolts and nuts — and each must be designed to work with the others. Get one of them wrong and the joint leaks at start-up, fails the hydrotest, or worse, fails in service.
Since 1994, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has delivered complete piping packages to projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion, the West-East Gas Pipeline, large petrochemical complexes, modern vessel piping systems, and steam power plant networks. Across that project base, the lesson we share most often with buyers is simple: treat the flange, gasket, and bolting as a single engineered assembly, not three independent line items.
The Three Flange Families You Will Spec Every Week
Most industrial piping uses one of three flange families. Each has a defined material scope, a standard dimensional system, and a clear best-fit application.
1. Steel Flanges — The Backbone of Process Piping
Steel flanges in carbon, stainless, and alloy steel dominate oil and gas, refinery, and power plant work. The common dimensional standards are ASME B16.5 (NPS 1/2" through 24"), ASME B16.47 Series A & B (NPS 26" and above), EN 1092-1 for European projects, GOST 33259 for Russian-spec work, and JIS B2220 for Japanese-spec piping. Facing types include RF (raised face), FF (flat face), RTJ (ring-type joint), and tongue-and-groove. Weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld, lap joint, and threaded styles cover virtually every installation scenario you will encounter.
2. Copper Nickel Flanges — The Marine Standard
Copper nickel flanges are specified for seawater cooling, ballast, firefighting, and shipboard piping where biofilm, chloride pitting, and macrofouling would destroy a carbon steel joint in months. 90/10 Cu-Ni is the workhorse for ship cooling and offshore firewater; 70/30 Cu-Ni is reserved for the most aggressive brine service. They are commonly produced to EEMUA 234, ASME B16.5, and naval specifications, and ship with matching Cu-Ni stub ends or weld-neck flanges.
3. Specialty Flanges — When the Standard Catalog Runs Out
Beyond the catalog items, buyers working on nuclear, subsea, and high-pressure wellhead projects need flanges to RCC-M, ASME B16.5 Class 1500/2500, or API 6A. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL produces these in duplex, super duplex, Inconel, and Monel when service conditions justify the upgrade.
Match the Gasket to the Flange Face — Every Time
A common procurement mistake is ordering flanges from one supplier and gaskets from another, with no engineering review of compatibility. The result on site is a soft-face spiral-wound gasket crushed onto a flat face, or an RTJ gasket dropped onto an RF flange because the stockroom ran out. Neither assembly will hold pressure.
The table below maps the standard gasket types to the flange faces where they are designed to seal.
| Flange Face | Recommended Gasket | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| Raised Face (RF) | Spiral wound, compressed non-asbestos, flexible graphite | Hydrocarbon, steam, chemicals up to Class 600 |
| Flat Face (FF) | Compressed non-asbestos, PTFE, rubber | Low-pressure water, cast iron flanges |
| Ring-Type Joint (RTJ) | Soft iron, low-carbon steel, stainless, Monel rings | High-pressure Class 600+, wellhead, subsea |
| Tongue & Groove / Male & Female | Spiral wound, flexible graphite with metal rings | Heat exchangers, vessel nozzles |
| Copper-Nickel (FF, RF) | EPDM, NBR, or Klingersil with Cu-Ni reinforcing | Seawater, shipboard, offshore platform |
Stud Bolts and Nuts: The Underspecified Component
Gasket stud bolt nut sets are almost always the cheapest line item on a flange data sheet, and almost always the first place an inspector finds a deviation. The two pitfalls we see most often are: (1) using the wrong stud material for the temperature service, and (2) under-specifying the nut grade so the assembly cannot be torqued to the design bolt load.
Reference ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs with A194 Grade 2H nuts for standard ASME Class 150 to Class 600 hydrocarbon service. Step up to B16 studs for high-temperature steam above 400°C, and switch to B8M / B8M Class 1 in stainless when the application is low-temperature or corrosive. For sour service to NACE MR0175, the entire bolt set must comply with the same environmental limits as the flange and pipe.
Pressure Classes and the Standards Behind Them
Every flange you order is stamped with a pressure class and a standard. The most common ASME ratings are Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500, each defining a different pressure-temperature envelope that the flange can safely hold. Choosing the wrong class is the most expensive decision in the entire joint, because the cost of a Class 600 weld neck is roughly 2–3x that of a Class 300, but the cost of a Class 300 failure in a Class 600 line is the entire pipeline.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies flanges to ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47 Series A & B, EN 1092-1, GOST 33259, and JIS B2220. Each flange ships with a Mill Test Certificate that documents the material grade, heat number, mechanical properties, and dimensional inspection, ready for your QA team to release.
Why Pair Flanges With the Right Fittings and Valves
A flange is one piece of a much larger assembly. In a typical process line, the same spool will include pipe fittings such as elbows, tees, and reducers, plus industrial valves for isolation and control. When all of these components arrive from a single supplier, the MTCs line up, the heat numbers match, the bolting torques are consistent, and the QA package is one document instead of seven.
This is the practical reason EPC contractors and plant operators are moving to bundled piping packages. A flange specified in isolation is a commodity. A flange specified as part of a coordinated pipe, fitting, and valve package is a 30-year reliability decision.
What to Demand in Documentation Before Acceptance
Every flange shipment should arrive with documentation that your inspector can audit line by line. The minimum package includes:
- Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 with chemical composition and mechanical properties
- Dimensional inspection report against the standard reference (ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, etc.)
- Hydrostatic or pneumatic test records for body and seat, where applicable
- NDT records (UT, RT, MPI, DPI) for higher pressure classes and alloy materials
- Material traceability — heat number marked on each flange, linked to the MTC
- NACE MR0175 / MR0103 certificates for sour service orders
A Practical Pre-Shipment Checklist
- Confirm the standard (ASME, EN, GOST, JIS) and the pressure class match the line specification
- Verify facing type (RF, FF, RTJ, T&G) and surface finish (stock finish, serrated, smooth)
- Match the stud bolt and nut grade to the temperature and corrosion service
- Check that the gasket style suits the flange face and the fluid
- Request MTC 3.1 or 3.2 with full heat-number traceability
Project Experience That Proves the Approach
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied flanged piping packages to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, large petrochemical plant networks, modern vessel metal pipeline systems, marine construction works, and steam power plant pipelines. In each case, the flange, gasket, bolting, fittings, and valves were delivered as one coordinated package with consistent documentation and a single point of accountability.
