A field-tested selection handbook for EPC engineers, plant operators, and procurement teams who need reliable industrial valves for refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, and water transmission systems.
An industrial valve is the single component most often blamed when a pipeline fails — and most often the piping around it is the real culprit. Wrong material selection, mismatched end connections, and overlooked standards turn a routine shutdown into a multi-day maintenance event. After three decades of supplying valves, fittings, and pressure piping to the world’s largest energy and water projects — including China’s West-East Gas Pipeline and the South-to-North Water Diversion — we have learned that the best industrial valves are the ones selected against a written service envelope, not chosen from a catalog page.
This guide walks through the four decisions that determine whether a valve performs reliably for 20 years or becomes the next unplanned outage: the function it must perform, the type that matches that function, the body material that survives the fluid, and the standard that proves it was built correctly. We close with the procurement checks that separate a mill-direct order from a trading-house roll of the dice.
Before you compare valve types, write down the four numbers that govern almost every choice downstream. A valve that works at 16 bar and 80 °C will fail quickly at 64 bar and 420 °C, even with the same nominal size.
Once these are locked, valve type, body material, end connection, and inspection level all follow logically. Without them, the supplier quotes the most common stock item, which is rarely the optimal one.
Each valve type solves a specific flow-control problem. The table below summarizes the structures we supply most often to oil, gas, power, and water projects. Choosing by function — not by name — eliminates a large share of the mistakes seen on site.
| Type | Function | When to Choose It |
|---|---|---|
| Gate Valve | On/off isolation, bi-directional shut-off | High-pressure transmission mains, infrequent operation, low pressure drop required when fully open |
| Ball Valve | Quick quarter-turn shut-off, optional flow control | Pigging stations, LNG, subsea, sour service, and any service demanding fast, tight sealing |
| Globe Valve | Throttling and precise flow regulation | Cooling water, fuel gas, and metering stations where gradual adjustment matters more than pressure drop |
| Check Valve (Swing / Lift / Dual Plate) | Automatic backflow prevention | Pump and compressor discharges, subsea pipelines, and any line that must not reverse-flow on shutdown |
| Butterfly Valve | Lightweight on/off or moderate throttling | Large-diameter water mains, firewater, HVAC, and low-pressure gas where weight and space are constraints |
| Plug Valve | Tight on/off in dirty or corrosive service | Slurry, wellhead manifolds, and multi-port flow switching |
| Pressure Relief / Safety Valve | Overpressure protection | Compressor stations, boilers, storage tanks, and any pressure vessel that must relieve a credible upset |
Practical tip: A gate valve is the wrong choice for throttling. Even a few percent of partial opening causes seat erosion and vibration that destroy the wedge within months. If you need flow control, choose a globe valve or a characterized ball — not a gate valve at half-open.
Material selection is where most procurement errors either save money or cost a fortune. The wrong alloy corrodes through, hardens past the point of safe operation, or wastes budget on over-specification. Three families cover the majority of industrial service.
ASTM A216 WCB, A352 LCB, and A217 WC6/WC9 are the workhorses for hydrocarbon service, steam, firewater, and refined product lines. They are weldable, machinable, and available in nearly every size from ½″ to 48″. For sour service to NACE MR0175, restricted-hardness grades are mandatory. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL pairs carbon steel valves with our carbon steel pipe and forged fittings to keep the metallurgical system consistent across the line.
ASTM A351 CF8/CF8M (304/316), the duplex grades (F51, F53, F55), and the super-austenitic 254 SMO handle corrosive, hygienic, and offshore service. Stainless valves connect naturally to our stainless steel pipe ranges for process modules where mixed materials would create galvanic risk. For chloride-bearing service above 60 °C — desalination, hot seawater, and chemical dosing — duplex or super-duplex is often the more economical long-term choice despite a higher unit price.
For high-temperature steam, refinery hydrocrackers, and sour hydrocarbons, Cr-Mo bodies (F11, F22, F91) and nickel alloys (Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy) are specified to NACE MR0175 and ASME B16.34. For marine seawater cooling and shipboard piping, copper-nickel bodies (90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni) are the industry default — they resist biofouling, tolerate moderate velocities, and remain stable in brackish service. These pair with our copper-nickel piping, copper nickel flanges, and matching fittings for a fully compatible marine system.
A valve never operates alone. The end connection, the mating flange or fitting, and the standard each side was built to must all line up. A Class 150 ASME flange is not interchangeable with a PN 16 EN flange at the same nominal size — bolt patterns, thicknesses, and facing finishes all differ.
A valve is only as good as the joints around it. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies complete valve-and-fitting packages, including pipe fittings in butt-weld, socket-weld, and threaded configurations, plus matching pipe flanges in carbon, stainless, alloy, and copper-nickel materials. The entire sealing package — gaskets, stud bolts, and nuts — arrives with full MTR traceability, ready for installation.
Quality control is not paperwork; it is the only objective evidence that a valve is safe to install. The following tests are mandatory under the major valve standards and should appear in every procurement specification.
| Test | Purpose | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Shell (hydrostatic) test | Confirms body and bonnet integrity at 1.5× rated pressure | API 598, ISO 5208 |
| Seat (low-pressure air / hydro) | Verifies tight shut-off against allowable leakage class | API 598, API 6D |
| Backseat (stem seal) | Confirms stem packing under full-open pressure | API 598 |
| Fire test | Validates seat integrity after 30 min at 760 °C | API 607, API 6FA |
| Cryogenic test | Confirms operation at –196 °C for LNG service | BS 6364, ISO 28921 |
| Fugitive emissions | Quantifies stem and body leakage for VOC control | ISO 15848, API 624 |
| NDT (PT / MT / UT / RT) | Detects surface and internal defects in cast or welded bodies | ASME Sec V, ASTM E165/E709/E317/E94 |
Always require EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificates and, for sour or nuclear service, full traceability of every heat. If a supplier cannot produce them on request, the supply chain is not what it claims to be.
There is a real difference between a mill-direct valve and one passed through several intermediaries. When you buy from a manufacturer with its own casting, forging, machining, and inspection facilities, you control the heat number, the chemistry, the heat treatment, and the test records. When you buy through a trading house, you inherit whatever the trading house sourced that month.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been a mill-direct producer since 1994, with 500+ technical staff, an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, and a fully accredited ISO 9001 laboratory. Our valves, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and pressure piping are produced under API, EN, and ASME certifications for EPC contractors, shipyards, petrochemical plants, and power-generation projects — including the South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline.
Send us your line class, fluid, temperature, and quantity — we will return a datasheet, a material recommendation, and a quotation within one business day. From industrial valves and gaskets to a complete piping package including pipes, fittings, and flanges, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL delivers mill-direct quality with project-level coordination.
