A practical procurement guide for engineers and buyers sourcing pressure-boundary components for oil & gas, petrochemical, power and marine projects — built around the bundled product capabilities of EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL.
Most procurement teams treat piping components as individual line items. One requisition covers pipe flanges, another covers the matching pipe fittings, and a third covers the stainless steel pipe body. On paper that looks tidy. On site it creates schedule risk, dimensional mismatch and inspection headaches.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, an integrated Chinese manufacturer with more than three decades of mill experience and a yearly capacity above 480,000 tons, takes the opposite view. Pipe, fittings, flanges, gasket stud bolt nut sets and industrial valves are produced and shipped as one coordinated pressure-boundary bundle. The result is one mill test certificate set, one delivery window, and one accountable supplier.
Before a single RFQ goes out, the engineering team should freeze five things: design code (ASME B31.3, B31.1, EN 13480), design pressure and temperature, corrosion allowance, fluid service, and the required NDT scope. These five numbers drive material selection for the entire pressure boundary.
Skipping this step is the single most common reason buyers end up with the wrong steel flanges or an over-specified butt weld fittings package. EZ STEEL's engineering team can review a P&ID and recommend a fit-for-purpose material stack before any quote is issued, which shortens the approval loop and avoids costly re-spec.
Pipe is the long lead item in any pressure-boundary bundle. The selection logic is straightforward once the envelope is locked:
A flange rated ASME B16.5 Class 300 must be paired with a B16.5 Class 300 gasket and stud bolt set, a B16.9 butt weld fitting, and a valve with the same face-to-face dimension. Mixing families is where leakage starts. The safest workflow is to publish a single "joint schedule" listing every joint number, its rating, material, facing (RF / RTJ / FF) and gasket style, then issue it as one document to the mill.
Practical joint-schedule example
For a 4-inch, ASME B16.5 Class 150, RF, ASTM A105 carbon steel loop carrying treated water at 80 °C, the matched bundle is: ASTM A234 WPB butt weld fittings, ASTM A105 steel flanges with RF serration, spiral-wound gasket with graphite filler, B7 studs with 2H nuts. The supplier who delivers all four in one shipment is the supplier who removes your interface risk.
Connection style is more than a mechanical choice — it sets the maintenance philosophy for the next 20 years. The four common options each have a clear sweet spot:
| Connection | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Butt weld (BW) | High-pressure, high-temperature, critical service | Strongest joint; requires qualified welders and NDT |
| Socket weld (SW) | Small-bore (≤ 2"), high-pressure, non-corrosive | Compact and strong; crevice corrosion risk in stainless service |
| Threaded | Low-to-medium pressure, fire-protection, instrument air | Fast installation; not suitable for repeated cycling or high temp |
| Flanged (RF / RTJ) | Equipment connections, valves, items needing periodic maintenance | Easy isolation; heavier and more expensive per joint |
For stainless or copper-nickel lines, prefer butt weld or flanged joints. Threaded connections are usually reserved for utility and instrument lines.
The cheapest way to add 15% to a piping order is to add inspection requirements after the purchase order is signed. Mill capacity, lead time and pricing are all sized to the inspection regime from day one. The standard stack that EZ STEEL routinely delivers on industrial valves, pipe flanges and pressure tubes is:
Building these requirements into the RFQ keeps lead time predictable and avoids weekend surprises during goods receiving.
Stud bolt length, nut grade, washer requirement and gasket thickness must be specified together with the flange class. A common error is procuring ASTM A193 B7 studs separately and then discovering at site that the RF facing requires a different stud length because the gasket is 4.5 mm instead of 3 mm. Bundling gasket stud bolt nut kits with the flange order eliminates that rework.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been manufacturing carbon, stainless and copper-nickel piping products in Hunan, China since 1994. The current scope covers eight product lines — pressure tubes, pipeline works, structure works, fittings, flanges, gasket/bolt sets, heat-efficiency tubes and industrial valves — under API, EN and ASME certifications, with an ISO 9001-accredited in-house lab.
For project buyers, the practical benefit is the ability to issue one purchase order for the full pressure-boundary package and receive it under a single mill test certificate set. The mill has supplied products into the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical plants, modern vessel piping and steam power plant lines, which means the documentation, traceability and welding procedure support have already been written for the kind of envelope a real project requires.
