A practical buyer's guide for specifiers, EPC contractors and procurement teams — by EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL.
In oil and gas, power generation, petrochemical, marine and structural projects, the wrong carbon steel pipe specification can lead to weld cracking, corrosion leaks, schedule slippage and unbudgeted replacement costs. Choosing between ASTM A106, ASTM A53 and API 5L is one of the most common — and most consequential — decisions an engineering buyer makes.
This guide consolidates the differences you need to know, the use cases each grade is designed for, and the practical checklist we use at EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL when we review an inquiry for our customers across more than 60 countries. It is written for engineers, EPC project managers and procurement leads who need a clear, decision-ready comparison — not a 30-page standard text.
ASTM A106, ASTM A53 and API 5L each cover a different slice of the carbon steel pipe world. They overlap in some areas, but they were written for different services, and assuming they are interchangeable is one of the most common specification errors in industrial projects.
The table below summarizes the practical differences that drive the buyer's decision. Always confirm the latest edition with your project specification, but the following rules of thumb have been consistent across recent revisions of all three standards.
| Item | ASTM A106 | ASTM A53 | API 5L |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Seamless only | Seamless, ERW, EFW, galvanized | Seamless, ERW, SAW (LSAW/HSAW), DSAW |
| Typical service | High-temp / high-pressure | Low-pressure fluid, structural | Oil & gas pipeline transport |
| Common grades | A, B, C | Type E (ERW), Type F (furnace), Type S (seamless) | PSL1 / PSL2 — A25, A, B, X42–X80 |
| Temperature range | Up to ~750 °F (400 °C) and above | Ambient to ~350 °F (177 °C) typical | Per grade; X65/X70 used in arctic & sour service |
| Hydrostatic test | Required | Required | Required, plus NDT for PSL2 |
| Charpy impact | Optional (per SR) | Not required by default | Mandatory for PSL2 |
| Typical applications | Refinery piping, boiler tubes, power plants | Water mains, fire protection, structural columns, low-pressure air | Cross-country oil & gas pipelines, gathering & distribution lines |
There is no "best" standard — only the right match for your service. Here is the decision logic we apply when we help buyers consolidate their requisition.
In many plants, all three appear in the same isometric. A typical refinery can run A106 in the process unit, A53 in the utility rack and API 5L in the inbound crude line — and each batch is procured, marked and traceable separately. Mixing the standards, or substituting one for the other to save a few dollars per ton, is a common source of non-conformance findings during inspection.
Pipes rarely fail in isolation. The real integrity of a piping system is set by how the pipes connect to pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and valves. Mismatched material grades between the pipe and the fittings are a frequent cause of galvanic and creep failures.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, we supply the full system — not just the line pipe. When you buy a heat-exchanger bundle, a boiler modification or a gas-pipeline expansion from us, you can source the carbon steel pipe, the butt-weld fittings, the flanges, the gasket sets and the stud bolts from a single mill chain. That removes one variable from your inspection scope and one customs clearance from your logistics schedule.
