A practical guide to carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel flanges for power, petrochemical, and marine projects
In any industrial piping system, the flange is the small but critical component that holds everything together. A wrong material choice can lead to leaks, unplanned shutdowns, or premature replacement. Whether you are designing a high-temperature boiler line, a chemical process loop, or a seawater cooling circuit, the right pipe flanges decision starts with understanding the relationship between service conditions and material properties. This guide walks you through that decision in plain engineering terms.
Flanges are often specified as an afterthought, treated as a commodity that just needs to match the pipe. In reality, the flange sits at the joint, where stress concentration, thermal cycling, and corrosive media all meet. A steel flange rated for the wrong temperature, or selected without considering the chloride content of the process fluid, can crack within months while the pipe itself is still serviceable.
Three variables drive most flange material decisions: operating temperature, internal pressure, and the corrosiveness of the medium. Add to that the standards your project must follow (ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, GOST, JIS) and the supply chain reality of what is actually available in the size and class you need. Working with a manufacturer that covers multiple material families under one roof removes a lot of that friction.
Carbon steel flanges, typically ASTM A105 for forged products and A216 WCB for cast, are the default choice for non-corrosive service. They are widely used in oil and gas transmission, structural piping, fire water systems, and general plant utilities. For higher temperatures, alloys such as A182 F11, F22, and F91 take over. These are common in power plant headers and refinery hydrocracker loops where creep resistance is required.
EZ STEEL supplies carbon and alloy steel flanges across the full ASTM, EN, and GOST grade range, and pairs them with carbon steel pipe and butt weld fittings from a single inventory, which simplifies traceability on multi-discipline projects.
Stainless flanges come into play when the medium is corrosive, when hygiene matters (pharma, food, dairy), or when the system sees wide temperature swings. Austenitic grades 304/304L and 316/316L cover most chemical and offshore applications. Duplex and super duplex grades are used for high-chloride seawater service where standard austenitics would suffer pitting or stress corrosion cracking.
For buyers looking at stainless pipe packages, EZ STEEL offers stainless steel pipe in ASTM A312, A213, A249, EN 10216-5, and JIS G3463 grades, along with matching stainless flanges that share the same mill test certificates.
When the service is seawater, brine, or a sour hydrocarbon, copper nickel alloy flanges (90/10 Cu-Ni or 70/30 Cu-Ni) are the proven answer. They resist biofouling and erosion in shipbuilding and offshore cooling lines, and they are specified in EEMUA 234, ASME SB466, and GB/T 8890. For more aggressive chemical or high-temperature service, nickel alloys such as Monel 400, Inconel 600/690, and Incoloy 800/825 extend the envelope further into aerospace and nuclear-grade piping.
Non-corrosive, ambient to moderate temperature: carbon steel (A105 / A216 WCB).
Corrosive chemicals, hygienic service, or low-temperature: austenitic stainless (304L / 316L).
High-temperature, high-pressure boiler or refinery: low alloy (F11 / F22 / F91).
Seawater or high chloride: copper-nickel (90/10 or 70/30).
Acid, sour service, or aerospace: nickel alloy (Monel / Inconel).
Material is only half of the decision. The flange facing and connection style must also fit the service. The most common options you will see in a procurement package are:
Each of these is offered by EZ STEEL under the pipe flanges category, in carbon, stainless, alloy, and copper-nickel material families.
A flange joint is only as good as the gasket, stud bolt, and pipe fitting it is paired with. Specifying a premium flange on cheap fasteners, or mixing material families between the pipe and the fitting, is one of the most common causes of joint failure in the field.
A complete package from one manufacturer removes that risk. EZ STEEL supplies pipe fittings in butt weld, socket weld, and threaded forms, spiral-wound and RTJ gaskets with stud bolts, and the full range of industrial valves for line isolation. Sourcing all of this from one supplier means one set of mill test certificates, one batch of traceability, and one point of contact if a question comes up on site.
For international projects, the flange datasheet usually has to satisfy more than one standard. EZ STEEL manufactures to ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, EN 1092-1, GOST 33259, and JIS B2220 dimensions, and holds API, EN, and ASME product certifications. The in-house ISO 9001 laboratory handles dimensional checks, hydrostatic testing, and non-destructive testing including ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection on request.
| Application | Typical Service | Recommended Flange Material |
|---|---|---|
| Power plant boiler headers | Steam at 540°C and above | Low alloy steel (A182 F11 / F22 / F91) |
| Refinery hydrocracker | High pressure, sour hydrocarbon | Carbon steel (A105) with cladding, or alloy F22 |
| Offshore seawater cooling | Chloride-rich, biofouling risk | 90/10 or 70/30 copper-nickel (EEMUA 234) |
| Chemical process line | Acid or alkali at moderate temperature | Stainless 316L or duplex |
| Food, dairy, pharma | Hygienic, CIP cleaning | Stainless 304L / 316L, Ra-finished faces |
| Building fire water | Ambient, low pressure | Carbon steel A105, galvanized if outdoor |
| Shipbuilding fire main | Seawater, vibration | Copper-nickel 90/10, EEMUA 234 |
