In any large-scale piping network, industrial valves quietly do the heavy lifting. They start and stop flow, isolate sections for maintenance, regulate pressure, and protect people and equipment when something goes wrong. Pick the wrong one, and you will see it as leaks, unplanned shutdowns, and rejected inspection reports.
After 30 years of supplying pipes, fittings, and steel flanges to projects from the South-to-North Water Diversion to the West-East Gas Pipeline, EZ Steel Industrial has seen one pattern repeat itself: most valve problems on site are actually specification problems that started long before the shipment arrived. This guide walks through how to specify valves correctly so they perform for the full life of the system.
The first question is never "gate or ball?" It is "what is flowing through this line, at what pressure and temperature, and how often will it be operated?" The answers determine everything else: body material, trim, end connections, and the matching pipe fittings and flanges.
Get these four parameters in writing before you talk to any supplier:
If the line carries seawater or a chloride-rich process stream, 90/10 or 70/30 copper-nickel body materials typically outperform carbon steel. For high-temperature superheated steam in a power plant, Cr-Mo alloy steels (ASTM A335 P11/P22/P91) are the established choice. For refinery hydrocracker service, you are usually looking at austenitic stainless or nickel alloy trims.
There is no "best" industrial valve — only the right valve for a defined function. The most common categories engineers specify on a piping isometric are:
A frequent mistake is using a gate valve for throttling. The partially open gate erodes under high velocity, and within weeks the valve can no longer shut off. A globe or ball valve is the correct choice for modulating duty.
For oil and gas, petrochemical, and power plant projects, valve specifications are governed by a stack of standards rather than a single document. At a minimum, your RFQ should reference the applicable design, material, and testing codes:
A mill that holds API, EN, and ASME certifications, and works in an ISO 9001-certified lab, can usually back up its certificates with the full heat-traceable documentation your inspector will ask for. EZ Steel Industrial is approved to API, EN, and ASME standards, and our lab operates under ISO 9001, so every shipment leaves with a complete Mill Test Report.
Practical tip: On cross-border EPC projects, inspectors often ask for both the source-country standard (e.g., GB/T 12234) and an internationally recognized equivalent (e.g., API 600). Confirm with the supplier up front that they can issue both, or you will lose weeks reconciling documentation during shipment.
A valve does not stand alone. Its long-term reliability depends on the gaskets, stud bolts, and the gasket stud bolt nut sets that hold the joint together. Spiral-wound and ring-type joint gaskets are standard for high-pressure hydrocarbon lines; graphite or PTFE gaskets suit lower-temperature water and chemical service.
Matching the bolt material to the service is just as important. ASTM A193 B7 studs with A194 2H nuts cover most carbon and low-alloy steel flanges in pressure service. For stainless or copper-nickel pipe flanges, B8 / B8M studs are the standard choice. Ordering these as a kit from the same supplier that supplies the flanges avoids metallurgical mismatch and keeps traceability tight.
On multi-line projects, the bottleneck is rarely the valve itself — it is the dozens of small coordination issues that show up at the loading dock. Wrong flange facing, mismatched bolt lengths, certificates in the wrong format, missing heat numbers.
Consolidating the valve package with a single source that also supplies the line pipe, fittings, and flanges eliminates most of those issues. EZ Steel Industrial ships all eight of our product lines from one integrated mill in Changsha, with a 480,000+ ton annual capacity and over 500 specialists covering production, QA, and export documentation. The practical result: one PO, one contact, one set of certificates, and one shipping schedule that actually lines up.
That same model has already supported projects of the scale of the South-to-North Water Diversion, the West-East Gas Pipeline, and petrochemical plant piping across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America.
Send us your line class or isometric, and we will return a matched package: industrial valves, line pipe, pipe fittings, and pipe flanges, all documented to the same standard. Our export team in Changsha responds within one working day, with technical support from the mill — not a call center.
