A practical guide to butt weld, socket weld, and threaded fittings — and how to match each connection type to your pressure, temperature, and service environment.
In any industrial piping network — whether it carries steam in a power plant, hydrocarbons in a refinery, or seawater across a ship's hull — the pipe fittings that join the lines together determine how safely, how efficiently, and how long the system will run. Choosing the wrong fitting does not only mean extra cost; it can lead to leakage, downtime, and even safety incidents.
At EZ Steel Industrial, we have been manufacturing and supplying industrial piping components since 1994. With an annual capacity exceeding 480,000 tons and full-cycle production from raw material to finished fitting, we help engineers, EPC contractors, and distributors select the right connection style for the right job. This guide walks through the three most common categories — butt weld, socket weld, and threaded — and how to match them to your service conditions.
Before you look at material grades or pressure ratings, the first decision is the connection method itself. Each style is engineered for a different range of sizes, pressures, and installation environments.
Butt Weld (BW) Fittings
Butt weld fittings are fabricated with beveled ends that align with the pipe and are welded together. They are the standard choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical-service lines such as power plant headers, refinery process piping, and boiler tubes. Common shapes include 90° and 45° elbows, equal and reducing tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, caps, and stub ends. Manufacturing standards typically referenced are ASME B16.9, EN 10253, MSS SP-75, and GOST 17375/17376.
Socket Weld (SW) Fittings
Socket weld fittings feature a socket into which the pipe is inserted before being fillet-welded. They are generally used in small-diameter, high-pressure systems where vibration resistance and leak-tight joints are important — typically up to NPS 2 in class 3000/6000 service. SW fittings are widely used in chemical injection lines, instrument air, and auxiliary steam connections.
Threaded Fittings
Threaded fittings are joined by screw threads, most commonly NPT or BSP. They are favored where welding is not practical — such as in fire-protection systems, low-pressure water lines, gas distribution, and field installations where components must be removable for maintenance. Pressure ratings are limited compared to BW or SW, but the ease of assembly and disassembly makes them indispensable in many utility systems.
Selecting a fitting is rarely about choosing the strongest option. It is about choosing the option that best balances pressure, temperature, fluid aggressiveness, size, and maintenance needs.
Material selection works hand-in-hand with connection type. The right pipe flanges, gaskets, and stud bolts must be specified to match the fitting material, the line class, and the fluid being handled — which is why many buyers source the full bundle from a single supplier.
For industrial buyers, the difference between a good fitting and a problematic one often comes down to documentation and testing. Look for fittings that are:
Working with a manufacturer that operates an ISO 9001-certified laboratory and produces fittings under API, EN, and ASME approvals — like EZ Steel Industrial — significantly reduces the risk of receiving non-conforming material on a project site.
Most piping projects do not need only fittings. They need a coordinated set of pressure tubes, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves — all delivered on time and traceable to the same quality system. Sourcing these from one supplier simplifies logistics, speeds up inspection, and avoids the common issue of mismatched certificates.
EZ Steel Industrial's product range covers the full piping scope: carbon and alloy steel tubes, stainless steel tubes, copper-nickel alloy tubes for marine and offshore service, finned and U-bend heat exchanger tubes, and the complete fittings, flanges, gaskets, and valve package. Materials are kept in strategic inventory to support fast delivery on common grades such as ASTM A106, A53, A312, A335, and API 5L.
