From flange type and material to international standards — a field-tested walkthrough for engineers, procurement teams, and EPC contractors.
In any industrial piping system — whether it carries steam across a power plant, crude oil through a refinery, or seawater through a vessel's cooling loop — the pipe flanges you choose quietly determine how safely, efficiently, and economically the whole system runs for the next 20 to 30 years. Yet for many buyers, flange selection still feels like navigating a maze of acronyms: WN, SORF, RTJ, RF, FF, ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, JIS B2220. The wrong match can mean leaks, unplanned shutdowns, or costly re-fabrication.
Drawing on more than three decades of manufacturing experience since 1994, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied flanges to projects as demanding as China's West-East Gas Pipeline and South-to-North Water Diversion schemes. This guide distills the practical decisions our customers face most often, so you can specify with confidence and avoid the usual pitfalls.
Before browsing flange catalogues, clarify four questions: What fluid is in the line? What temperature and pressure? How often will the joint be opened? And does the piping system vibrate, cycle thermally, or sit in a corrosive environment? Once these are fixed, the flange type, face, and material almost select themselves.
For most buyers, a clean decision tree looks like this:
Pressure class & service severity → pick flange structure (Weld Neck, Slip-On, Blind, etc.) → match the standard (ASME, EN, JIS, GOST) → choose material grade (carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy, copper-nickel) → confirm facing (RF, FF, RTJ) and bolt grade.
Industrial catalogues list dozens of variants, but in day-to-day procurement you really only need to know six. The table below covers the structures EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships most frequently to power, petrochemical, and marine customers.
| Flange Type | Typical Use | Why It's Chosen |
|---|---|---|
| Weld Neck (WN / WNRF) | High pressure, high temperature, critical service | Hub-to-pipe weld transfers stress smoothly; preferred for thermal cycling. |
| Slip-On (SO / SORF) | Low to medium pressure, water, air, general service | Easy alignment, lower fabrication cost, faster installation. |
| Blind (BL / BLRF) | End-of-line closure, pressure testing, vessel heads | Seals pipe ends and equipment nozzles without additional fittings. |
| Socket Weld (SW) | Small-bore (≤ NPS 2) high-pressure lines | Smooth bore, good for steam and process piping where crevice corrosion is a concern. |
| Threaded (TH) | Non-welded service, low pressure, utility lines | No hot work required — useful in hazardous areas or maintenance work. |
| Lap Joint (LJ) | Systems needing frequent dismantling or bolt-hole rotation | The backing flange rotates freely around the stub end, simplifying alignment. |
For marine and offshore service — particularly seawater cooling, firewater, and ballast lines — many of our customers move to copper nickel alloy flanges (90/10 or 70/30). They resist biofouling and chloride attack in ways that even high-grade stainless struggles to match over a full service life.
A Weld Neck flange in the wrong material is still a failure waiting to happen. Here's how we typically match grade to service in customer RFQs:
Every flange we deliver ships with a Mill Test Certificate traceable to heat number, and our ISO 9001 laboratory performs independent verification of chemical composition and mechanical properties. Forged flanges also undergo magnetic particle or ultrasonic examination as specified by the standard.
Mixing ASME B16.5 dimensions with EN 1092-1 bolting on the same joint is a recipe for leaks. Standard selection is usually driven by project location and end-customer specification:
Common Flange Standards and Where They Apply
ASME B16.5 / B16.47 — North America, most international oil & gas EPC projects.
EN 1092-1 — Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and most petrochemical plants worldwide.
JIS B2220 — Japan, Southeast Asia, and shipyards under major class societies.
GOST 33259 — Russia, CIS, and projects under Russian design codes.
ASME B16.36 / B16.48 — special process and orifice flange applications.
Our steel flanges range covers all five systems in sizes from 1/2" through 60", and we regularly help customers convert between standards when a project crosses regional boundaries. If you need a flange machined to one standard but tested to another, just let us know at the RFQ stage — it's a request we handle weekly.
A flange is only as good as the joint it forms. Three small details decide whether your flange connection survives its first thermal cycle:
1. Facing finish. Raised Face (RF) is the default for most services. Flat Face (FF) is used for cast iron or FRP flanges where a full-face gasket is required. Ring Type Joint (RTJ) is mandatory for high-pressure hydrocarbon service above Class 600.
2. Gasket selection. Spiral-wound gaskets with graphite or PTFE fillers cover most refinery and chemical duties. Non-asbestos compressed fibre works for water and air. RTJ rings — R, RX, BX — pair with RTJ facings in high-pressure service. We supply matching gaskets, stud bolts, and nuts as a single bundled kit so you avoid mismatched components.
3. Bolt torque and sequence. Cross-tighten in at least four passes to the final torque. Under-torquing causes leaks; over-torquing cracks the gasket or warps the flange face. Our technical team can provide torque tables matched to your specific gasket and bolt grade on request.
After three decades of quoting, fabricating, and shipping flanges worldwide, the same handful of issues shows up in roughly 80% of incomplete RFQs. Sorting these out before the inquiry lands on an engineer's desk typically cuts two weeks off the delivery schedule:
Selecting a flange is one decision; trusting who makes it is another. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL operates from Changsha, China, with more than 500 skilled employees and a 480,000-unit annual output covering our full tube, fitting, flange, gasket, and valve portfolio. We hold API, EN, and ASME certifications and run an ISO 9001-accredited in-house lab, so the same mill that rolls your pipe can finish the mating flange.
Our project teams have delivered bundled solutions to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, China's West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical complexes, and modern shipyards — projects where a single mismatched flange would have stopped a yard-wide operation. You can browse our full pipe flange range or jump straight to steel flanges and copper nickel flanges for marine service.
Every inquiry is reviewed by a qualified engineer who checks standard compatibility, material fit, and certification requirements before a quotation is issued — usually within one working day. Drawings, MTCs, EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV) are all available on request.
