Material, Standard, Pressure Class & Application — Everything an Engineer Needs Before Ordering
In any industrial piping network — from a cross-country oil pipeline to a power plant boiler header — pipe flanges are the joints that hold the whole system together. A single mismatched flange can cause leakage, unplanned downtime, or worse, a safety incident. With more than 30 years of manufacturing experience, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied millions of flanges to petrochemical, marine, power-generation and water-conservancy projects worldwide. This guide distills what every procurement engineer, project manager and EPC contractor should know before placing an order.
A pipe flange is a forged or plate-cut disc with bolt holes around its perimeter. Two flanges, bolted together with a gasket in between, create a sealed, demountable joint between pipes, valves, pumps or pressure vessels. Compared with threaded or welded connections, flanged joints allow easier assembly, inspection, cleaning and replacement — which is why they are the default choice for plants that demand long service life and high reliability.
For mission-critical systems such as high-pressure boilers, refinery hydrocrackers and seawater cooling lines, choosing the right flange is not a commodity decision. It is a safety decision.
Although ASME B16.5 lists more than ten styles, more than 90% of industrial orders are placed for these five. Understanding their strengths saves both cost and headaches on site.
The "best" flange material is always the one that matches the medium, temperature and pressure of your line. The table below summarises the four families most buyers will encounter, all of which are stocked at EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL.
Flange Material Selection at a Glance
Carbon Steel (ASTM A105, A350 LF2): Workhorse of the industry. Used for general water, steam, oil and gas service up to about 425 °C. Lowest cost per piece.
Stainless Steel (304/304L, 316/316L, Duplex): The default for chemical, food-grade, marine and offshore lines where corrosion resistance is required.
Alloy Steel (F11, F22, F91): Chromium-molybdenum grades for high-temperature power and petrochemical service above 425 °C.
Copper-Nickel (90/10, 70/30): Outstanding seawater resistance. Standard for shipbuilding, offshore platforms and desalination plants.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies the full range — from steel flanges in carbon, stainless and alloy grades, to copper nickel flanges certified to EEMUA 234, ASME B16.5 and GB/T standards. Every heat is traceable and ships with a full Mill Test Report (MTR).
The flange that arrives on site must comply with the standard printed on the datasheet. The most commonly referenced documents are:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL's products are certified to API, EN and ASME specifications, with an ISO 9001-accredited laboratory performing in-house mechanical, chemical and NDT tests. For buyers, that means one supplier can cover projects on three continents without changing the inspection routine.
Three technical parameters determine whether a flange will seal correctly for the next 20 years. Get any one wrong and the joint will leak.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL flanges have been specified in some of the most demanding infrastructure projects on the planet:
With 480,000+ tons of annual capacity, 500+ skilled staff and a fully integrated production line from raw-material inspection to final hydrostatic testing, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL is structured to deliver consistent quality on both single-mill orders and multi-thousand-piece framework contracts.
Before you release a flange PO, run through these six points. They take ten minutes and routinely prevent expensive rework:
