In any plant, refinery, or power facility, the pipe you specify will be in service for decades. A wrong choice on grade, standard, or fabrication route leads to corrosion pitting, premature weld failure, and unplanned shutdowns that cost far more than the saving on a cheaper product. This guide walks procurement, project, and engineering teams through the practical decisions behind selecting stainless steel pipe for real industrial duty — pressure service, fluid transport, and structural use — using the same criteria our engineers apply at EZ Steel Industrial every day.
When a project moves beyond low-pressure water or fire-fighting service, stainless steel pipe quickly becomes the most cost-effective option across its full life cycle. The chromium-rich passive film gives the material its corrosion resistance, while the austenitic and duplex families also deliver toughness at cryogenic temperatures and strength at elevated temperatures.
Where stainless pipe outperforms alternatives
High-temperature superheaters, seawater cooling, chemical dosing, food and pharmaceutical lines, hygienic process water, fire-fighting risers, and architectural structures exposed to coastal or industrial atmospheres.
The challenge is that "stainless" is a family, not a single product. Picking the wrong grade or the wrong manufacturing route is the most common reason stainless pipe disappoints buyers. The sections below break down the four decisions that matter most.
Austenitic grades cover roughly 80% of the industrial stainless pipe market. TP304 / TP304L is the everyday workhorse for general process water, compressed air, and low-corrosion service. TP316 / TP316L adds 2–3% molybdenum, which noticeably improves resistance to chlorides and is therefore the default for coastal, marine, and chemical-dosing applications. The "L" variants restrict carbon to 0.030% max, which prevents sensitisation and intergranular corrosion after welding — a critical point for fabricated systems that cannot be re-solution-annealed in the field.
For boiler tubes, superheaters, and refinery furnace piping, the H-grade austenitic alloys (321H, 347H, 304H) and the 310S family retain creep strength well above 600 °C. EZ Steel supplies these to ASTM A213 and EN 10216-5, with full solution-anneal and stabilisation heat treatment as required.
Where chlorides and mechanical stress combine, duplex grades such as 2205 and the super-duplex 2507 deliver almost twice the yield strength of 304L. They are now standard for desalination, subsea piping, and high-pressure process lines in offshore platforms.
Standards dictate the chemistry range, mechanical properties, testing regime, and dimensional tolerances you can rely on. The most common specifications in the EZ Steel inventory are listed below, with the typical use case for each.
| Standard | Product form | Typical service |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless & welded austenitic | High-temperature and general corrosive service |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Seamless ferritic & austenitic | Boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless & welded austenitic | Low- and medium-temperature general service |
| ASTM A249 / A249M | Welded austenitic | Boilers, superheaters, condensers, heat exchangers |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless stainless pressure | European pressure equipment |
| EN 10217-7 | Welded stainless pressure | European process piping |
| JIS G3463 | Seamless & welded stainless | Boilers, heat exchangers (Asian market) |
| GOST 9940 / 9941 | Seamless stainless | Russian-specification industrial plants |
| GB/T 14976 / 13296 | Seamless stainless | Chinese domestic and export projects |
Specify the standard in your enquiry and you will avoid the single biggest source of dispute at goods-in inspection: a "stainless pipe" that meets one national code but not the one your project actually requires.
The seamless vs welded question is no longer a simple one of "better" vs "worse". Modern welded stainless pipe, made from strip with full weld bead control and solution annealing, performs as well as seamless in most process and structural applications, and is available in longer lengths and larger diameters at a lower cost. Choose your fabrication route from the service duty:
EZ Steel produces both routes. Our stainless pressure tube and heat-exchanger range is built around seamless ASTM A213 / A312 / EN 10216-5, while our pipeline and structural range is dominated by welded A312 / A778 / EN 10217-7.
A stainless line is only as reliable as the components on its ends. Mixing a TP316L pipe with carbon-steel pipe fittings or low-grade pipe flanges introduces galvanic cells, galling threads, and inconsistent pressure ratings that show up as leaks in service. Specifying the full system together — pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves — keeps the metallurgical chain consistent and the documentation package simple.
For a 316L line in a chemical plant, for example, we typically pair the pipe with ASTM A182 F316L weldolets, ASME B16.5 stainless flanges, spiral-wound gaskets with graphite or PTFE filler, ASTM A193 B8M stud bolts, and 316 trim gate and globe valves. The whole bundle ships together with one mill test certificate, one quality plan, and one point of contact.
Four checkpoints separate a dependable stainless pipe mill from a trading office:
EZ Steel Industrial has been operating since 1994 from Changsha, China, with more than 500 specialists and an annual capacity above 480,000 tonnes. Our stainless, carbon, alloy, and copper-nickel ranges are produced to ASTM, EN, GOST, JIS, and GB standards, and are regularly released into major Chinese infrastructure programmes as well as export projects across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.
"316" is a chemistry range, not a single chemistry. A cheap 316 with low molybdenum and high carbon will corrode in chloride service and crack after welding. Always request the actual MTC and check the Mo and C values against the standard you are buying to.
For hygienic, food, pharmaceutical, and architectural applications, the surface finish (pickled, polished, electropolished) is part of the specification, not a cosmetic detail. Specify Ra value or ASTM A480 finish code from the enquiry stage.
Standards such as ASTM A312 and EN 10216-5 require hydrostatic testing and, depending on the grade and size, eddy current or ultrasonic testing. Confirm these tests at enquiry stage, and do not accept a mill test certificate that does not list the results.
Heat efficiency tubes and high-pressure pressure tubes have tighter chemistry ranges, stricter dimension controls, and more demanding test sequences than commodity line pipe. Specify to A213 / EN 10216-5 from the start, and you will avoid costly rework once the tube bundle reaches the fabricator.
For most industrial buyers, the cleanest path to a well-specified order is a short, structured enquiry:
A clear enquiry at this level usually returns a sharper quote, fewer clarifications, and a faster lead time — because the mill is quoting to a real specification, not guessing from a one-line "stainless pipe, 100 mm" request.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies the full stainless piping package — stainless steel pipe in seamless and welded forms, butt-weld and socket-weld fittings, stainless and duplex flanges, gaskets and stud bolts, and industrial valves — from one production base, under one quality plan. For high-pressure boiler and heat-exchanger projects, our dedicated heat efficiency tube and pressure tube lines round out the system.
