Beyond ASTM A312 — selecting grades, dimensions, finishes, and project-ready suppliers for refinery, marine, and power plant piping.
Choosing a stainless steel pipe looks simple on a datasheet. In practice, the same nominal pipe can fail in six months in a refinery hydrocracker or last thirty years on a seawater cooling line — depending on grade, fabrication, surface finish, and mill traceability. This walkthrough breaks down the engineering decisions a procurement or project engineer actually has to make, then shows how bundling pipe, fittings, and flanges from a single mill source reduces risk on real industrial builds.
What you will learn: how to match grade to service environment, what ASTM/EN/JIS standards to specify, why finish and traceability matter as much as chemistry, and how a bundled pipe fittings + flange + pipe package cuts both cost and on-site rework.
The most common stainless pipe selection error is starting from "we always use 304." Every industrial service is a corrosion-mechanical-thermal problem first, and a materials problem second. Map your line conditions to one of the four service environments below before you open a catalog.
A stainless steel pipe can be ordered to ASTM, EN, JIS, or GOST systems. Each project owner has a preferred one, and most international EPC packages accept two. Rather than mixing grades, lock the standard first, then choose the grade within it.
| Standard | Common Use | Typical Grades | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | High-temp & corrosive service | TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321, TP347 | Seamless, welded, cold-worked; most widely specified. |
| ASTM A213 | Boilers, superheaters, exchangers | TP304H, TP316H, TP321H | Smaller OD, high-temp creep resistance. |
| EN 10216-5 | European pressure piping | 1.4301, 1.4404, 1.4571 | Required for CE-marked pressure equipment. |
| JIS G3459 / G3463 | Asian plant builds | SUS304, SUS316, SUS321 | Closely aligned to ASTM grades. |
| GB/T 14976 | Chinese domestic projects | 06Cr19Ni10, 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 | Equivalent to 304/316; verify with cross-reference table. |
For a given nominal size, a pipe can be seamless, ERW welded, or EFW fabricated. The choice changes pressure rating, corrosion behavior, and price by 20–40%. Most modern plants reserve seamless pipe for high-pressure and high-temperature services (A106, A335, A213) and use welded pipe for low/medium-pressure utility and structural lines. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies both, with full EN 10204-3.1 mill test certificates on every heat.
Pickled, passivated, polished, or as-rolled — the surface you order determines whether the pipe passes its first inspection in service. Pickling removes welding oxide scale and restores the chromium-oxide passive layer; passivation enhances that layer on an already-clean surface. For hygienic lines, specify internal surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 μm and request a passivation certificate. For structural and process lines, a standard pickled finish is usually enough.
A pipe by itself rarely reaches mechanical completion. Every spool needs elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, gaskets, and stud bolts that match the same standard and grade family. Splitting the procurement across multiple vendors is the single biggest source of on-site rework. A project-ready supplier should be able to deliver the pipe plus the matching pipe fittings, flanges, and bolting as one traceable package.
Stainless pipe almost never runs alone. It ties into carbon steel pipe at battery limits, into industrial valves at every instrument tap, and into copper-nickel condensers at the cooling-water end. When you specify pipe, ask the supplier to cross-check: are the flange bolt-hole patterns identical? Are the welding consumables compatible? Will the gasket face finish (RF, RTJ, FF) match the valve body?
Practical tip: a 5-minute call between the pipe supplier and valve supplier before PO release prevents up to 10% of the punch-list items you would otherwise find at mechanical completion. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL covers pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves in-house — designed to be specified as one package.
Every heat should ship with EN 10204-3.1 MTC, marking consistent with the certificate, and PMI verification on receipt. The risk of receiving mixed heats — or even mixed grades — is real in the secondary market. For pressure-service and sour-service applications, insist on third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) at the mill before container loading. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL is API, EN, and ASME certified, with an ISO 9001-accredited lab on site.
Even experienced buyers hit the same five traps on stainless pipe orders. Treat this as a pre-PO checklist.
The cheapest pipe on paper is rarely the cheapest installed. A spec that pairs the right grade, the right standard, the right finish, and the right bundled components — delivered with full MTC traceability from one mill — is what keeps a refinery, power plant, or ship on-stream. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been supplying carbon, stainless, and copper-nickel pipe plus the full fittings, flange, gasket, stud bolt, and valve package since 1994, with 480,000+ tons of annual capacity behind it. Whether you are sourcing a single spool or a 10,000-ton EPC package, the engineering conversation is the right place to start.
