Specifying the correct stainless steel pipe is rarely a one-line decision. Between ASTM, EN, JIS, and GOST standards — not to mention seamless versus welded, and grades from 304 to duplex — a single wrong choice can cost a refinery or a marine yard weeks of rework. After three decades of supplying tube and pipe to petrochemical, power, shipbuilding, and structural projects, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has learned what really matters when a buyer sits down with a procurement list. This guide condenses those lessons into a practical workflow you can apply to your next RFQ.
Most purchasing errors come from starting with a standard number and working backwards. A better approach is to map the operating envelope first:
Once those five lines are filled in, choosing between an ASTM A312 austenitic pipe, an EN 10216-5 pressure tube, or a GOST 9941 stainless tube becomes a far simpler decision. For a 30-year refinery header carrying hot hydrocarbons at 540 °C, you will likely land on TP321H or TP347H. For a desalination plant's seawater cooling circuit, the conversation shifts to super-duplex or 6Mo austenitic grades.
Seamless and welded stainless pipes are not interchangeable. Seamless pipe — produced by hot piercing or cold drawing — delivers uniform wall thickness and is the default for high-pressure, high-temperature, and cyclic-load service. Welded pipe, made by forming strip and autogenously welding it, is cost-effective for lower-pressure pressure tubes and structural applications where the load is largely static.
Within welded products, heavily cold-worked austenitic pipe (per ASTM A312/A312M) bridges the gap — it offers enhanced strength while remaining economical for chemical and food-grade process lines. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies all three routes from the same Changsha production base, which is rare among Chinese mills and means you can consolidate your pipeline works under one quality system rather than juggling two or three mills.
| Grade | Typical Use | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / 304L | General process piping, food & beverage, water service | Cost-effective, excellent formability and weldability |
| TP316 / 316L | Chemical, marine, pharmaceutical lines | 2–3% Mo boosts chloride resistance |
| TP321 / TP347 | High-temperature refinery and boiler service | Stabilised against intergranular corrosion |
| TP310S / TP309S | Furnace tubes, ethylene cracking | High Cr + Ni for sustained 1000 °C exposure |
| Duplex / Super-duplex | Seawater, sour service, offshore platforms | High strength, excellent SCC resistance |
A specification such as ASTM A312/A312M is a contract, not a marketing claim. Before releasing an order, confirm the mill test certificate (MTC) covers at minimum:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL's ISO 9001-certified laboratory performs all of these in-house, and every shipment is accompanied by an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. For projects that demand it, we can also issue 3.2 certificates witnessed by independent third-party inspectors.
One of the most common scheduling headaches on industrial sites is mismatched delivery of pipe, fittings, and flanges from different vendors. When the pipe fittings arrive in the wrong schedule or the pipe flanges don't match the facing type, the whole line is held up.
Because EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL is a full-line supplier, we routinely bundle austenitic stainless pipe with matching steel flanges, butt-weld elbows, stud bolts, and gaskets — all manufactured to compatible ASTM, ASME, and EN standards and shipped in coordinated batches. For heat-transfer and boiler packages, our heat efficiency tubes (including U bend tubes and finned tubes) integrate with the same procurement contract, eliminating interface risk entirely.
The post-2024 market has shown how vulnerable long-lead pipe supply can be. Mills running only on hot-rolled orders often quote 8 to 14 weeks for common austenitic grades. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL maintains a strategic stock of A312, A269, A213, EN 10216-5, and JIS G3463 tubes in the most demanded sizes (1/2" to 24", Sch 10S through XXS) at our 480,000-tonne-per-year integrated facility, which means many of the sizes on your RFQ are ready to ship within days.
For non-standard sizes, our project-centric workflow assigns a single coordinator who manages the order from mill scheduling through export documentation — a model we originally developed for China's South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline projects, and which we now apply to every export order regardless of size.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been manufacturing and exporting industrial pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves since 1994. Our Changsha headquarters and integrated mill serve EPC contractors, refineries, shipyards, and boiler manufacturers in more than 60 countries.
