A practical selection framework that matches stainless steel pipe grades, manufacturing routes and international standards to the real conditions of your plant, pipeline or heat-exchanger project.
A stainless steel pipe is rarely chosen for its name alone. Engineers and procurement teams are usually balancing four constraints at the same time: internal pressure, operating temperature, the chemistry of the fluid (or gas) flowing inside, and the cost of long-term ownership. Picking the wrong combination can shorten service life, cause unplanned shutdowns, or push the budget out of range. This guide walks through the decisions that drive the right specification of stainless steel pipe in real industrial service, and shows how EZ Steel Industrial supports each step with stocked inventory, full material traceability and mill-test documentation.
Before comparing grades, define the worst-case combination of pressure, temperature, chloride content and required service life. Two refineries with the same nameplate capacity can end up with very different piping materials because one sees trace chlorides in the feedstock and the other does not. Once the envelope is clear, the choice of stainless steel pipe narrows quickly, because the international standards system was designed exactly for this kind of matching.
The three specifications you will meet most often are ASTM A312 (austenitic seamless and welded pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service), ASTM A269 (seamless and welded austenitic tubing for general low- and high-temperature use) and ASTM A249 (welded austenitic tubes for boilers, superheaters and condensers). On the European side, EN 10216-5 covers seamless stainless tubes for pressure service, and EN 10312 covers welded stainless tubes for the transport of aqueous fluids. Choosing a standard first, then a grade within it, prevents the common mistake of buying a 304 tube where a 316L pressure tube was required.
For higher pressure, higher temperature or more corrosive service, a seamless pipe gives a continuous, homogeneous wall that does not contain a weld seam. Seamless stainless steel pipe is typically specified for boiler tubes, superheaters, refinery hydro-processing and high-pressure fluid lines where a longitudinal weld would be the weakest point.
Welded pipe, on the other hand, is produced by forming strip or plate into a cylinder and welding the seam, usually by TIG, plasma or laser. With modern weld control and 100% radiographic or eddy-current inspection, welded pipe today can meet the same pressure and corrosion requirements as seamless at lower cost and with faster delivery. For low- to medium-pressure service, structural frames, process water lines and many food-grade applications, welded pipe is the more economical choice.
Rule of thumb: specify seamless when the design pressure, design temperature or fatigue cycling pushes the wall into the high-stress range, or when the fluid chemistry rules out any risk of seam-related corrosion. Specify welded when the service is moderate, the diameter is large, and the project needs short lead times.
Within the austenitic family, 304/304L is the everyday workhorse for water, steam, food, dairy and general chemical service, while 316/316L adds 2–3% molybdenum for better resistance to chlorides and acidic media. For higher temperatures, TP304H and TP316H have a controlled carbon range that improves creep strength, which is why they appear in boiler specifications. For aggressive chloride-bearing fluids, duplex and super-austenitic grades are worth evaluating, but they are outside the scope of most general-purpose projects.
| Standard | Form | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless & welded austenitic | High-temperature and general corrosive service |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless & welded austenitic tubing | General low- and high-temperature service |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless stainless tubes | Pressure service in Europe |
| EN 10312 | Welded stainless tubes | Transport of aqueous fluids |
| GB/T 14976 | Seamless & welded stainless pipes | Fluid transport in China |
| JIS G3463 | Stainless boiler & heat-exchanger tubes | STB340, STBA22 and similar grades |
These standards cover the same family of austenitic stainless steels but use different notation systems, so a project that has to satisfy both ASME and EN codes often needs dual-certified material. Working with a mill that can issue EN 10216-5 plus ASTM A312 test reports on the same heat avoids the cost and delay of double sourcing.
Inside our stainless steel pipe catalogue the inventory is split by end use. Pressure tubes are the seamless and welded austenitic tubes used in boilers, condensers and high-pressure fluid lines, including ASTM A213 TP304H/TP316H, EN 10216-5 grade 1.4301/1.4571, JIS G3463 STB340/STBA22 and GB/T 13296 tubes. Pipeline works cover fluid transport under GB/T 14976, ASTM A312, EN 10312 and GOST 9940, which is where the bulk of process water, chemical and food-grade pipe ends up. Structure works include welded and seamless stainless tubes for structural and mechanical applications, typically meeting EN 10296-2 or ASTM A554, where dimensional accuracy and surface finish matter more than pressure rating.
A stainless line is only as reliable as the components that join it. We supply pipe fittings in three families — butt-weld for high-integrity process piping, socket-weld for small-bore high-pressure systems, and threaded fittings for low-pressure service — together with pipe flanges in carbon, stainless, alloy and copper-nickel, plus the matching gaskets, stud bolts and nuts. Bundling the pipe with the correct fittings, flanges and gaskets from a single supplier removes one of the most common causes of on-site leakage: a stainless line joined with carbon-steel flanges or mixed-alloy bolting.
For any project in oil and gas, petrochemical, power or food processing, the inspector will ask for a mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), a PMI verification, and records of the non-destructive testing that was performed. At EZ Steel Industrial, every shipment is supported by batch-traceable MTCs, optional third-party inspection from SGS, BV or TUV, and a quality system certified to ISO 9001 with API, EN and ASME material approvals. This means the same documentation that satisfies a refinery in the Middle East also satisfies a power plant in Southeast Asia and a shipyard in Europe.
Founded in 1994 and based in Changsha, China, EZ Steel Industrial has more than three decades of experience in industrial pipe and tube manufacturing, with an annual capacity above 480,000 tons and a workforce of 500+ specialists. Our strengths in stainless steel sit alongside carbon, alloy, copper-nickel and nickel-alloy lines, so a single inquiry can cover a complete piping package — pressure tubes, line pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves — under one quality system and one shipping schedule.
That project-centric bundling reduces interface risk: the same heat number traceability, the same inspection reports, the same delivery packaging, and one point of contact from enquiry to site delivery. For engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors handling multi-discipline projects, this is often the difference between a piping system that installs cleanly the first time and one that needs rework in the field.
Send us your material specification, the operating envelope (pressure, temperature, fluid) and the standards you need to meet, and our team will return a matched quotation covering pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves within one working day.
