A practical guide to grades, standards, and sourcing decisions from a 30-year Chinese manufacturer
Walk into any petrochemical plant, desalination facility, or modern boiler room, and you will find the same quiet workhorse carrying fluids under pressure, heat, and corrosion: the stainless steel pipe. Yet selecting the right one is rarely straightforward. With dozens of standards (ASTM A312, A269, EN 10216-5, GB/T 14976, JIS G3448), four major metallurgical families, and a choice between seamless and welded construction, even experienced buyers can second-guess their specifications. This guide distills three decades of EZ Steel Industrial's manufacturing experience into a clear decision framework for engineers, procurement teams, and project managers.
The first decision is metallurgical, not dimensional. The four main families each solve a different problem. Austenitic grades 304 and 316 are the everyday champions: non-magnetic, ductile, and corrosion-resistant across most chemical, food, and water service. Grade 316 adds 2-3% molybdenum, which makes it the default choice for marine and chloride-rich environments. Martensitic grades 410 and 420 are hardenable by heat treatment, suited to wear-resistant applications. Ferritic grade 430 is magnetic with moderate corrosion resistance, often used in architectural trim. Duplex grades 2205 and 2507 combine austenitic and ferritic structures, delivering roughly twice the yield strength of 304 plus superior chloride resistance, which is why they appear in offshore piping and high-pressure chemical processing.
Practical rule of thumb
If the service temperature stays below 400°C and the chloride content is low, specify 304. If chlorides, acids, or seawater are present, move to 316 or 316L. If the design pressure demands higher strength with corrosion resistance, duplex 2205 is the upgrade path.
Standards dictate not just chemistry but testing, tolerances, and traceability. The standards listed below are the ones our clients request most frequently. They cover the full EZ Steel product range and align with the major markets we serve.
ASTM A312 / A312M – Seamless, welded, and cold-worked austenitic pipes for high-temperature and corrosive service.
ASTM A269 / A269M – Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general low and high-temperature service.
EN 10216-5 – Seamless stainless steel tubes for pressure purposes (European market).
GB/T 14976 – Stainless steel seamless pipes for fluid transport (Chinese domestic market).
GOST 9940 / 9941 – Seamless stainless steel tubes for general and high-temperature use (CIS markets).
JIS G3448 / G3463 – Stainless steel pipes for boilers, heat exchangers, and general piping (Japanese market).
Specifying the correct standard up front eliminates costly re-orders and customs friction. If your project crosses borders, dual-certified material to ASTM A312 and EN 10216-5 often simplifies logistics. EZ Steel maintains mill test reports (MTRs) for every heat number, which means the documentation your inspector asks for is already on file.
Seamless pipes are produced by piercing solid billets, giving uniform structure and higher pressure ratings. They are the default for high-temperature boilers, superheaters, refineries, and any application where the operating pressure justifies the cost premium. Welded pipes are formed from strip and welded, then often solution-annealed to restore corrosion resistance. For lower pressures, larger diameters, or sanitary applications such as food and pharmaceutical lines, modern welded pipes perform reliably and cost less. EZ Steel's stainless steel pipe lines include both, so the choice is driven by engineering, not availability.
A pipe system is only as strong as its joints. Pair your stainless steel pipe with the matching pipe fittings from the same supplier and grade. Butt-weld fittings (BW) are the standard for high-pressure, high-temperature service. Socket-weld fittings (SW) suit smaller-diameter high-pressure lines. Threaded fittings are convenient for low-pressure, easy-disassembly systems. Stainless steel pipe flanges complete the assembly and must match the same ASTM or EN pressure class as the pipe. Specifying all of these from one manufacturer eliminates the most common cause of premature failure: mixed-material connections.
Founded in 1994 in Changsha, China, EZ Steel Industrial operates with 500+ employees and an annual capacity exceeding 480,000 tons. Our product lines span carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloys for marine service, heat efficiency tubes including U-bend and finned designs, plus the full ecosystem of fittings, flanges, gaskets, and industrial valves. Strategic inventory of common grades such as ASTM A106, A53, and A312 means shorter lead times. Every shipment is backed by API, EN, and ASME certifications, with testing in our ISO 9001 certified laboratory.
Our tubes and pipes have been specified for flagship infrastructure including China's South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline projects, as well as petrochemical plants, modern shipbuilding, marine construction, and boiler fabrication worldwide. That range of applications is the best evidence that a well-stocked manufacturer can support projects of any scale.
If your project involves seawater, offshore platforms, or chemical tankers, plain stainless steel is often not the most economical choice. Our copper nickel alloy range, including 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni per EEMUA 234, ASTM B466, and GB/T 8890, delivers excellent seawater resistance with lower biofouling than stainless. Many shipbuilders combine stainless steel pipe for utility systems with copper-nickel for the main seawater cooling circuits, getting the best of both worlds.
