Selecting the right pipe flanges is one of those decisions that quietly decides whether a piping system runs for decades or spends its life in maintenance. A flange has to hold pressure, survive the medium, align with bolted gaskets, fit the matching pipe, and pass inspection. Get any one of those wrong and the joint becomes the weak link of the line. After three decades of supplying flanges to power, petrochemical, marine and water projects, EZ Steel Industrial has learned that the buyers who get the best service life are the ones who plan the flange spec before they plan the rest of the line.
This guide walks through the four decisions that matter: flange type, facing, material, and standard. It then maps those decisions to the related fittings, bolts and gasket so the full joint performs as one system.
The biggest mistake we see is buyers choosing a flange from a photo, then trying to bend the service around it. Reverse the order. Write down the medium, peak pressure, design temperature, cycle rate, and how often the line will be opened. The answer to "what flange do I need" sits inside that paragraph.
Each flange geometry solves a specific problem. Picking by type, then by standard, is faster and cheaper than picking by standard alone.
A weld neck flange has a long tapered hub that welds to the pipe. The hub distributes mechanical stress over a wider area, so it is the default choice for high pressure, high temperature, or cyclic service. Our steel flanges range covers ASME B16.5 WN in carbon, stainless and alloy steel from 1/2" to 24".
Slip-on flanges slide over the pipe and are fillet welded. They are cheaper and easier to align, which makes them the workhorse for low- to mid-pressure water, air and fire mains. Lap joint flanges are kept loose and rotate around a stub end — ideal when the system must be dismantled for cleaning without rotating the pipe. Both can be supplied in steel flanges and in copper nickel flanges for marine service.
Blind flanges close pipe ends, vessel nozzles and valve bodies. They are also used for hydrostatic testing of completed spools. Always confirm facing (RF, FF, RTJ) and pressure class before ordering — a Class 150 blind is not interchangeable with a Class 300 blind.
Threaded flanges attach without welding, which is useful in shops where hot work is restricted. Socket weld flanges are used on small-bore high-pressure stainless lines where a smooth bore is required. Neither is recommended for repeated cycling or high-temperature service.
Material selection drives corrosion allowance, temperature limit and cost. EZ Steel Industrial supplies flanges in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel and copper-nickel to cover the most common service envelopes.
Rule of thumb: choose material by medium first, then by temperature. A 316L flange in dry chlorine will fail faster than a carbon steel one. Material data sheets are not interchangeable with service experience.
ASTM A105, A350 LF2 and A694 are the standards we see most often. Carbon steel is the default for hydrocarbon piping, steam and firewater. It is cost-effective, machinable, and stocked in common pressure classes. Our broader carbon steel pipe line uses the same steel grades so the flange and pipe weld up cleanly.
304/304L suits general corrosive service. 316/316L adds molybdenum for chloride resistance. For higher temperature and creep resistance we move to 321, 347 or duplex. The stainless steel pipe family we produce — ASTM A312, A249, A269 — uses the same grade chemistry, which avoids galvanic mismatch at the flange-to-pipe weld.
90/10 and 70/30 copper-nickel flanges are the default for shipbuilding, offshore cooling and desalination. They resist biofouling, tolerate moderate velocities, and are easy to weld to Cu-Ni pipe. Where galvanic isolation matters, our copper nickel alloy tubes can be paired with the same-alloy flange system.
A182 F11, F22 and F91 flanges handle elevated temperature headers and boiler feed lines. They are usually matched to alloy pipe such as ASTM A335 P11/P22. Cross-checking chemistry and heat treatment with the pipe is non-negotiable.
The standard controls dimensions, pressure-temperature rating and testing. A flange ordered to the wrong standard will not bolt up to its mating flange even if both are "Class 150". Confirm the standard up front and stick to it across the joint.
Because we manufacture to all of these standards, an inquiry that already names the standard shortens the lead time dramatically.
A flange on its own is just a ring of metal. The real joint consists of the flange, the gasket, the stud bolts, the facing finish, and the pipe fittings that connect on either side. All of these have to be specified together.
Raised face (RF) with a spiral-wound gasket is the default. Flat face (FF) is used with non-metallic gaskets in low-pressure water lines. Ring-type joint (RTJ) is mandatory for high-pressure hydrocarbon. We pair every flange inquiry with the matching gasket stud bolt nut so the joint arrives complete.
Flanged connections should match the rest of the system. Our butt weld fittings, socket weld fittings and threaded fittings share the same material and traceability paperwork as the matching flanges. For heat-recovery loops we also supply U bend tubes and finned tubes so the heat exchanger head, the tube sheet, and the connecting flanges arrive as one package. Line isolation is handled with our industrial valves, supplied flanged to the same standard and facing.
Most flange failures we investigate trace back to a mismatch with the pipe. Our pressure tubes and pipeline works lines are produced to ASTM, EN, GOST and JIS standards, and we cross-check the chemistry, heat number and traceability with the flange order before shipment.
A complete flange inquiry only needs eight fields. Sending all of them in the first email removes three to five days of back-and-forth on most projects.
Most flange suppliers ship only the ring. Our customers ship complete joints. Because we manufacture stainless steel pipe, carbon steel pipe, pipe flanges, pipe fittings, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves under one ISO 9001 quality system, the heat numbers line up, the MTCs match, and the project file is complete at goods-in. For structure works the same traceability follows the pipe piles and the connecting flanges onto the foundation drawing.
We have been producing flanges, pipes and fittings since 1994. Our mill, lab and export team work to API, EN and ASME specifications, and our standard grades are kept in stock for fast-track delivery. The combination of manufacturing scale, full-cycle QC and project-oriented packaging is what makes the difference when a job site is waiting.
Send drawings, standards, quantities and your target delivery date to our export team at export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. We will return a quotation with the matching pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and pipe within one working day.
