Welding changes the microstructure of an ASTM A335 alloy steel pipe in three ways at once: it creates a hard, brittle heat-affected zone (HAZ), locks in high residual stresses, and shifts the balance of carbides in the base metal. Without controlled re-heating after welding, the joint can crack in service, lose creep life, or fail to meet the toughness values listed in the standard. Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is the process step that brings the weld region back to a stable, ductile condition by tempering martensite, relieving residual stress, and restoring toughness.
During PWHT, the welded assembly is heated to a temperature below the lower transformation temperature, held there long enough for diffusion to occur, and then cooled at a controlled rate. The main effects are:
The right temperature and hold time depend on the material grade and the wall thickness. The values below are widely used starting points for pipe and tube under ASME/ASTM specifications:
| Grade / Standard | Typical PWHT temperature | Minimum hold time (per 25 mm thickness) |
|---|---|---|
| A335 P11 / P12 (1¼Cr, 1Cr-½Mo) | 595 – 705 °C (1100 – 1300 °F) | 1 hour |
| A335 P22 (2¼Cr-1Mo) / GB/T 5310 12Cr1MoV | 675 – 760 °C (1250 – 1400 °F) | 1 hour |
| A335 P5 / P9 (5Cr, 9Cr) | 705 – 775 °C (1300 – 1425 °F) | 1 hour |
| A335 P91 / P92 (9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb) | 730 – 780 °C (1350 – 1435 °F) | 2 hours |
These ranges are not arbitrary. Going below them leaves the HAZ too hard; going above them can over-temper the base metal, dissolve strengthening carbides, and shorten creep life. Grade 91 in particular is sensitive: the recommended PWHT window is narrow, and the soak time must be long enough to develop the desired hardness band (typically 190 – 250 HBW) without over-softening.
For field or shop fabrication of carbon & carbon alloy steel piping, a controlled PWHT cycle usually follows these steps:
Some alloy tube materials and services intentionally skip PWHT, or restrict it heavily:
A correct PWHT cycle only delivers its full benefit when it is matched to a tube that was manufactured, tested, and certified to the right standard. For high-temperature boiler, superheater, and refinery service, the most widely specified options are GB/T 5310 alloy steel tubes and ASTM A335 alloy steel pipes in grades P5 to P122, supplied with full mill test certificates, dimensional checks, and optional non-destructive testing. Choosing a manufacturer that documents heat treatment parameters and supports custom PWHT procedures on request removes a major source of uncertainty during fabrication and helps inspectors close out the package faster.
