Carbon steel works until it doesn't. Once a tube sees sustained temperatures above ~400 °C, or carries a mildly corrosive process stream, or has to survive thermal cycling without creeping, plain carbon steel runs out of margin. Alloying adds chromium for oxidation and corrosion resistance, molybdenum for high-temperature strength and resistance to hydrogen attack, and small additions of vanadium, niobium, titanium, or tungsten for creep-rupture life. Nickel-alloy and copper-nickel tubes take the next step up — but at a price that is only worth paying when the chemistry truly demands it.
The practical consequence for the buyer is that the standard written on the drawing is doing most of the design work. ASTM A213 / A213M, ASTM A335 / A335M, EN 10216-2, GB/T 5310, JIS G3461, and GOST 8732 each define their own grade families, chemistry windows, mechanical-property floors, and test requirements. Choosing between them is not a paperwork exercise — it is a design choice that determines service life.
The table below is the working reference most B2B procurement engineers keep open when they review a tube inquiry. It maps the most common alloy steel tube grades to the service envelope they were designed for.
The T2 / T11 / T12 / T22 / T91 / T92 series is the workhorse of power and process plants. T2, T11, and T12 are 0.5–2.6 % chromium steels for sub-critical boilers and hydrocarbon service. T22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) is the universal answer for headers, superheaters, and refinery furnaces. T91 (9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb) and T92 (9Cr-0.5Mo-1.8W-V-Nb) are the modern answer for ultra-supercritical units running above 600 °C, where 100,000-hour creep-rupture strength is the design constraint.
When oxidation resistance or a corrosive condensate rules out ferritic alloys, A213 / SA-213 moves into austenitic grades. The "H" variants (TP304H, TP316H, TP347H) carry a controlled carbon range and a coarser grain size, which is what gives them their higher creep-rupture strength compared with the standard L-grades. This is exactly the trade-off that the TP304H / TP316H Boiler Tubes | ASTM A213 Seamless Stainless Pipes page documents for buyers running superheaters and reheaters above 570 °C.
Global projects rarely stay inside one standards regime. A refinery EPC in Southeast Asia may take EN 10216-2 for the European package and GB/T 5310 for the Chinese package on the same plot plan. Knowing the cross-walk between ASTM A213 T22, EN 10216-2 10CrMo9-10, GB/T 5310 12Cr2MoG, and JIS G3461 STBA24 saves weeks of clarification correspondence and lets the buyer consolidate the order on a single mill that holds all four certifications.
| Service Envelope | Typical ASTM Grade | Equivalent (EN / GB / JIS) | Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low- / mid-temp boiler, heat exchanger (≤ 450 °C) | A213 T2 / T11 / T12 | EN 10216-2 16Mo3 / 13CrMo4-5; GB/T 5310 15CrMoG; JIS G3461 STBA12 / STBA13 | Seamless ferritic |
| Refinery furnace, superheater (≤ 580 °C) | A213 T22 / A335 P22 | EN 10216-2 10CrMo9-10; GB/T 5310 12Cr2MoG; JIS G3461 STBA24 | Seamless ferritic |
| USC boiler, high-temp header (≥ 600 °C) | A213 T91 / T92; A335 P91 / P92 | EN 10216-2 X10CrMoVNb9-1; GB/T 5310 09Cr2MoWVTiB | Seamless ferritic, Q&T |
| Austenitic boiler / superheater, corrosive condensate | A213 TP304H / TP316H / TP321H / TP347H | EN 10216-5 1.4301 / 1.4401 / 1.4541; GB/T 13296 | Seamless austenitic |
| Low- / mid-pressure heat-exchanger tube | A179 / A192 | EN 10216-2 P235GH; GB/T 5310 20G; JIS G3461 STB340 | Seamless carbon |
For high-temperature and high-pressure service, seamless is non-negotiable. ASTM A213 covers seamless ferritic and austenitic boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes; ASTM A335 covers the matching seamless pipe for high-temperature service. The reason is metallurgical: a weld seam is a potential initiation site for creep voids, hydrogen attack, and corrosion under insulation, and at sustained elevated temperature those failure modes propagate fast.
Welded tubes (A249, A269, EN 10217-2 / 10296-2) earn their place in lower-temperature service — instrumentation, general corrosion-resistant lines, structural and mechanical tubing (A554, EN 10296-2), and austenitic condenser tubing where the solution-anneal after welding restores corrosion resistance. A typical plant will order A213 T91 seamless for the superheater and A249 TP304 welded for the condensate line, and call both lines in on the same PO.
That is also where a custom alloy steel tube order earns its margin. The mill holds tighter OD and wall tolerances than the standard, the heat-treatment cycle is matched to the wall thickness rather than a generic "normalized," and the MTC carries the actual chemistry lot-by-lot instead of a range. For a 5,000-tube order, those three differences usually save more in field rework than the entire premium.
The standard is the floor, not the ceiling. Most alloy steel tube failures in service trace back to either an inadequate test plan on the MTC or a heat-treatment step that was missed in production. A B2B buyer's quality file should lock in five things before issuing the PO:
The same tube grade can be specified across very different end-uses, and the design intent is worth understanding before the order goes out.
Fossil-fired and ultra-supercritical power plants are the single largest consumer of A213 T22, T91, and T92 tubes, plus the matching A335 pipe for headers and steam lines. A typical 600 MW USC unit will run several thousand tonnes of chrome-moly tubing through the boiler, the reheater, and the secondary superheater.
Hydrocracker, catalytic reformer, and coker furnaces rely on A213 T22, T11, and 9Cr-1Mo tubes for the radiant and convection sections. The shift to higher-severity feeds and higher operating temperatures is steadily moving refinery tube specifications from T22 toward T91, which is why a ASTM A335 Alloy Steel Pipes for High Temp & Pressure Use page lists P5 through P122 — the full ferritic spectrum a refinery EPC will see across multiple units.
Shell-and-tube exchangers in chemical, fertilizer, and offshore service use A213 ferritic tubes for the high-pressure side and A213 / A249 austenitic tubes for the corrosive or seawater side. The tube list in a typical offshore FPSO package will span carbon, alloy, and austenitic grades in a single drawing set, which is one of the reasons EPCs prefer a single mill-direct supplier.
Nuclear auxiliary systems (RCC-M Section II), aerospace ground-support equipment, and high-pressure process gas lines each carry their own grade call-outs. When the application sits outside the standard power / refinery envelope, the buyer's job is to confirm that the mill holds the relevant third-party accreditation (RCC-M, ASME III, EN 13480, PED) and can produce the documentation the end-user requires.
The cheapest wholesale alloy steel tube quote is rarely the lowest total cost. Three things separate a mill-direct partner from a trading-house order.
This is the logic behind EZ Steel Industrial's Carbon & Carbon Alloy Steel program, which keeps alloy steel tubes, carbon steel pipe, and the matching fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves on one quality system. A 1994-vintage mill with 500+ employees and an annual capacity above 480,000 units, running Cangzhou for alloy inventory, Yangzhou for large-diameter production, and Lishui for stainless and copper-nickel, is the kind of footprint that lets a buyer cover a 6,000-tonne EPC tube order without splitting the PO.
Walk through the items below before signing the purchase order. They cover the failure modes that show up most often on alloy steel tube deliveries.
If you are sourcing alloy steel tubes for a boiler, heat exchanger, refinery, or process plant and want a mill-direct quote with full traceability, EZ Steel Industrial can cover the full envelope — A213 / A335 ferritic and austenitic grades, A249 welded austenitic, plus the matching pipe, fittings, flanges, stud bolts, gaskets, and valves — on a single quality system.
Send your tube standard, grade, OD × wall, quantity, and end-use to the export desk, and the team will return a mill-direct offer with MTC format, NDT scope, and lead time within one business day.
