In a refinery skid, a seawater cooling line, or a boiler feed system, the smallest leak almost always traces back to one component: the flange joint. A pipe flanges selection that looked correct on paper can still cost a project weeks of rework if the facing, material grade, and pressure class are not aligned with the connected pipe. This walkthrough is built for the buyer, engineer, and procurement manager who has to make that decision on real industrial projects.
A common mistake in flange procurement is treating the flange as a stand-alone part. In practice, the flange must be specified together with the pipe material, the welding procedure, and the operating envelope. A carbon steel flange welded to a stainless line will create galvanic corrosion at the joint. A class 150 flange installed on a high-temperature steam header will creep and fail long before the connected stainless steel pipe reaches its service life.
For carbon and alloy service, the matching pipe is usually a carbon steel pipe grade such as ASTM A106, A53, or API 5L. For corrosive or high-purity service, an austenitic stainless steel pipe to ASTM A312 or A269 is the typical reference. Once the pipe grade is fixed, the flange material, facing, and pressure-temperature rating can be derived from the same standard family.
Most industrial piping systems only use a handful of flange types. The selection rule is simple: match the structural type to the operating duty, then match the standard and material to the pipe.
The hub is butt-welded to the pipe, so the stress is transferred from the flange to the pipe wall. This is the preferred type for high pressure, high temperature, and cyclic service. For boiler and petrochemical lines carrying superheated steam or hydrocarbons, WNRF is the default.
The flange slides over the pipe and is fillet welded. It is easier to align and cheaper to install, but the joint is weaker than a weld neck. SORF is widely used in low to medium pressure fire-water, cooling water, and utility lines.
Used to close pipe ends, valve ends, and pressure vessel openings. It is also used for hydrostatic testing and future line extension. Specify the facing, pressure class, and material together with the matching gaskets.
Both are used in small-bore, high-pressure instrumentation and auxiliary lines. Socket weld gives a smooth bore; threaded flanges are used where welding is not practical. Confirm thread standard (NPT, BSPT) before ordering.
Used with a stub end, the flange can rotate around the stub. This is helpful for bolt-hole alignment in large-diameter, frequently disassembled systems such as marine or chemical plant piping.
Selection shortcut: WNRF for high pressure and high temperature, SORF for utility and low pressure, Blind for terminations and test, Socket Weld / Threaded for small-bore auxiliary lines, Lap Joint for systems that need frequent dismantling.
The three specifications that always travel together are material grade, facing type, and pressure class. Get any one of them wrong, and the joint will not behave as designed.
| Service Condition | Typical Flange Material | Typical Facing | Common Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel utility, fire water, low pressure steam | ASTM A105 carbon steel | Raised Face (RF) | ASME B16.5 Class 150 |
| High pressure steam, hydrocarbon, refinery | ASTM A182 F11 / F22 alloy | Raised Face (RF) or RTJ | ASME B16.5 Class 300 to 600 |
| Stainless process line, food, pharmaceutical | ASTM A182 F304 / F316 | Raised Face (RF) | ASME B16.5 Class 150 to 300 |
| Seawater cooling, marine, offshore | Copper-nickel (Cu-Ni 90/10 or 70/30) | Raised Face (RF) | EEMUA 234 / ASME B16.5 |
| High temperature boiler, superheater | ASTM A182 F11 / F22 / F91 | Ring Type Joint (RTJ) | ASME B16.5 Class 600 to 1500 |
When the flange is matched to a stainless steel pipe, the material grade should be from the same family (for example, F304 to TP304, F316 to TP316). This keeps the corrosion potential balanced across the joint.
For a real industrial project, the flange is never ordered in isolation. It is part of a pressure-boundary package that includes pipe, fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves. When these items come from different suppliers, mismatches in material traceability, dimensional tolerance, and delivery schedule become routine.
A bundled approach is more efficient. When the pipe, flanges, fittings, and gaskets are sourced from one manufacturer with shared mill test certificates and a coordinated production plan, the site receives a matched set. MTR cross-checks are faster, weld procedures are easier to qualify, and the on-site NDT pass rate goes up. For a project that runs on a tight schedule, that coordination is often the difference between on-time delivery and a delayed commissioning.
Before sending a request for quotation, the following items should be clear. Missing any one of them usually leads to a second round of clarification, a price revision, or a delivery slip.
Not every supplier can deliver on the checklist above. The indicators of a serious industrial supplier are visible in the first inquiry response. Look for confirmation that the mill is certified to API, ASME, and ISO 9001, and that the mill test certificates reference the same standard as the flange drawing. Ask for evidence of previous supply to the same industry: refinery, power plant, shipyard, or chemical facility. And ask how the flange production is scheduled against pipe and fitting production if the project is a bundled package.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing pipe, flanges, fittings, and valves for industrial projects since 1994. The manufacturing base covers carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, and the full pressure-boundary package from one source. With API, EN, and ASME certified production, and ISO 9001 certified laboratory testing, the company supports buyers who need both single-item orders and project-bundle delivery for power, petrochemical, marine, and water transmission projects.
If you are specifying pipe flanges for a live project and want the pipe, fittings, gaskets, and stud bolts to arrive as a matched set, send your RFQ to the EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL engineering team. Reference your standard, pressure class, material grade, and quantity, and a project coordinator will return a quotation, MTR sample, and production schedule aligned with your site timeline.
