Choosing the right material, facing, and standard for long-term, leak-free piping systems
In any industrial piping system — whether it carries steam across a refinery, seawater through a ship's cooling loop, or natural gas along a cross-country pipeline — pipe flanges are the joints that hold everything together. A poorly specified flange causes leaks, unplanned shutdowns, and in the worst cases, safety incidents. The challenge for buyers and engineers is that "a flange" is not a single product; it is a family of connections that must be matched to the pipe material, the medium, the pressure class, and the applicable code.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, we have been manufacturing and supplying flanges, pipes, fittings, and valves from our base in Changsha, China since 1994. Our products are used in national projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion and the West-East Gas Pipeline, as well as in petrochemical plants, marine vessels, and power stations around the world. This guide distils what we have learned about how to specify flanges correctly — and how to source them as part of a complete, compatible piping package.
Every flange decision begins with four questions: What is being carried? At what temperature and pressure? Is the environment corrosive? And which standard governs the rest of the system? Answer these first, and the catalog will narrow itself down considerably.
Only after these are settled does it make sense to talk about facing (RF, FF, RTJ), bolt grade, and gasket type.
A flange should never be the weak link in the corrosion or temperature chain. The simplest rule: use the same family of material as the pipe, and upgrade when the joint sees higher stress than the line itself. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies flanges across the three families that cover virtually every industrial application.
Carbon and alloy steel flanges are the workhorses of refineries, power plants, and oil & gas pipelines. They are specified to ASTM A105, A350 LF2, A694, and equivalent forged grades, paired with carbon steel pipe in API 5L, ASTM A106, A53 or EN 10208 grades.
Stainless steel flanges (ASTM A182 F304/F316, duplex, super duplex) are the default where corrosion, hygiene, or elevated temperature demands it. They are typically paired with stainless steel pipe in ASTM A312, A249, EN 10216-5 or GB/T 14976 grades for use in chemical processing, food and beverage, and high-purity service.
Copper-nickel flanges (90/10 Cu-Ni and 70/30 Cu-Ni) are the standard for marine cooling, shipbuilding, desalination, and offshore platforms. They resist seawater corrosion far better than carbon steel and avoid the galvanic issues that come with coated alternatives. Our copper nickel flanges are produced to EEMUA 234, ASME B16.5, and GB/T standards and are routinely shipped with full material test reports.
The facing — the machined surface the gasket sits on — is one of the most commonly mis-specified elements. A mismatch between facing and gasket is a leading cause of joint failure.
Pair the facing with the correct gasket stud bolt nut assembly — spiral-wound, ring-joint, graphite, or non-asbestos — and verify the bolt grade (typically ASTM A193 B7/B7M studs with A194 2H/2HM nuts) matches the service.
Each flange geometry exists for a reason. Specifying the right one is often a matter of matching access, alignment, and maintenance needs.
Each of these works hand-in-hand with pipe fittings — elbows, tees, reducers, caps — which must follow the same material, standard, and pressure class. Mismatches here are common on multi-supplier projects, which is why more EPC contractors now ask for a single bundled source.
In boilers, heat exchangers, condensers, and fin-fan coolers, flanges meet tubes that carry their own special requirements — and the joint geometry, weld procedure, and NDT scope all change. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL manufactures and supplies heat efficiency tubes including U bend tubes and finned tubes in stainless, carbon, and copper-nickel grades, so the same mill that delivers the flanges can also deliver the tube bundles and the matching tube-sheet assemblies. This avoids the supply-chain and traceability gaps that come from splitting procurement across vendors.
For any flange entering pressure-service, the paperwork is as important as the part. A credible supplier provides:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL holds API, EN, and ASME certifications, and operates an ISO 9001-accredited in-house laboratory. Every flange shipment is accompanied by full documentation and — for nuclear, offshore, and other safety-critical applications — can be released with third-party witness.
The cheapest flange on a spreadsheet is rarely the cheapest flange on a project. When flanges, pipes, fittings, gaskets, and industrial valves come from different suppliers, the project absorbs extra cost in coordination, mismatched delivery dates, duplicated inspections, and warranty disputes.
By contrast, a mill that produces or sources the full package — like EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL — can deliver a coordinated lot with a single point of accountability, harmonised material certificates, and bundled logistics. Our eight product lines (carbon and stainless steel, copper-nickel alloys, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets and stud bolts, and industrial valves) cover the full Bill of Materials for most refinery, power, marine, and pipeline projects.
If you are at the specification stage, comparing suppliers, or sourcing a retrofit, our engineering team is ready to review your flange schedule, recommend the right material and facing combination, and provide a quotation that includes the matching pipes, fittings, and gaskets. Send us your enquiry list, drawings, or RFQ — we will reply with a complete technical and commercial package, typically within two working days.
