Choosing the right flange material, face type, and standard can decide whether a pipeline runs safely for 30 years — or fails in a maintenance turnaround.
If you have ever opened a procurement specification for a refinery, a chemical plant, or a seawater cooling line, you know how quickly pipe flanges become a critical decision. They are the joints that hold the system together, take the full operating pressure, and — when something goes wrong — are usually the first component to be inspected. Get the specification right and the rest of the piping is much easier. Get it wrong and you spend the next decade fighting leaks.
This guide is written from the perspective of a manufacturer that has been supplying steel flanges to power, petrochemical, marine, and infrastructure projects since 1994. The goal is to give engineers, buyers, and project managers a clear framework for choosing the right flange — and the right supplier — without getting lost in standards jargon.
A flange is rarely a stand-alone purchase. In most projects it is bundled with pipe fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and the pipe itself. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL works this way every day: the company supplies carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, fittings, and flanges from a single inventory, which is what makes a “project-bundled” supply model possible.
When you treat flange selection as part of a piping package, three things happen:
Material is the first filter. The same flange dimension can be produced in carbon steel, low-alloy steel, stainless steel, duplex, or copper-nickel, and each one behaves very differently in service.
For a deeper look at how carbon, stainless, and alloy steel steel flanges compare in real applications, our engineering team has published a side-by-side material guide. The short version: don’t over-specify duplex where 316L will do, and don’t try to use carbon steel in a chloride-rich cooling line — both mistakes are common and both are expensive.
Once the material is set, the next decision is the standard and the pressure class. These two parameters together control flange thickness, bolt circle, and facing.
The most common standards in the projects we supply are:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL manufactures to all five. With 480,000+ tons of annual capacity and 500+ production staff, the factory can hold dual-certified stock (for example, ASME + EN on the same heat) — which is often the only practical way to keep an EPC project on schedule.
A surprising number of field leaks come down to a wrong facing. The four most common options:
For offshore and marine service, where copper nickel flanges are common, the facing choice also affects galvanic compatibility with the gasket and the bolting.
A flange joint is a system. The flange, the gasket, and the stud bolts must be selected together — otherwise you can end up with a Class 300 flange held by Class 150 studs, which is a known cause of joint failure during hydrostatic test.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies this as a single package: gasket, stud bolt & nut sets matched to the flange material, facing, and pressure class. For sour service (NACE MR0175) or low-temperature service (A320 L7/L7M studs), the right bolt grade is just as important as the flange itself.
For any project above Class 300, or for any service in oil & gas, power, or marine, the documentation is the product. A genuine mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) should always come with the shipment. At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, the in-house ISO 9001-certified lab provides:
If a supplier can’t provide these documents heat-number by heat-number, the price is rarely as good as it looks.
A flange is a long-term decision. It will sit in a pipe rack for 20 or 30 years, exposed to thermal cycling, vibration, and corrosion. Buyers who come back to us year after year usually mention four things:
Send your datasheet, isometric, or material list to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. Our team will come back with a full material breakdown, an indicative lead time, and the relevant MTR/EN 10204 documentation. For project-bundled enquiries covering pipe flanges, pipe fittings, and the matching pipe, we can hold stock against your call-off schedule.
