A pipe flange is rarely a stand-alone purchase. In real projects, it has to seal against a gasket, bolt to a matching flange on a valve, and survive the same medium as the pipe it terminates. Getting the specification wrong at the procurement stage costs far more than the price of the part — it costs shutdowns, re-work, and re-inspection. This guide walks through how to specify pipe flanges for the three service environments that cause the most specification errors: high pressure, seawater, and high temperature.
Most procurement mistakes start when the flange is selected before the service envelope is fully defined. Before you look at a catalog, lock down the four numbers that drive every downstream choice: design pressure, design temperature, the medium (including any water chemistry), and the pipe schedule. These four numbers determine the pressure class, the material, the facing type, and whether the flange needs to be forged or plate-cut.
At EZ Steel Industrial, our engineers routinely receive RFQs that only specify "ASME B16.5, Class 150, carbon steel" — and then have to ask three follow-up questions before they can recommend the right product. Saving those questions at the inquiry stage almost always leads to the wrong flange arriving on site.
For high-pressure service, the dominant choice is a weld neck flange with a raised face (RF) or ring-type joint (RTJ) facing. The long tapered hub of the weld neck distributes mechanical stress from the flange to the pipe wall, which is why it is specified for hydrocarbon, power plant, and chemical process lines where Class 600 and above is the norm.
Three things matter when ordering weld neck flanges for pressure service:
Our steel flanges line covers weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld, threaded, and lap joint styles in carbon, stainless, alloy, and duplex steels, manufactured to ASME B16.5, B16.47, EN 1092-1, GOST, and JIS standards. For most high-pressure process lines, the weld neck in ASTM A105 (carbon) or ASTM A182 F11/F22/F91 (alloy) is the default recommendation.
Seawater is the environment where carbon steel flanges fail fastest. Even with coating, the crevice between the flange face and the gasket traps chlorides and oxygen, and pitting or galvanic corrosion can perforate a weld neck within a few operating seasons. For any marine, offshore, or shipboard line, the answer is almost always copper nickel alloy — typically 90/10 (Cu-Ni 90/10, UNS C70600) for piping and 70/30 (Cu-Ni 70/30, UNS C71500) for higher-temperature or higher-velocity service.
Two related design notes that often get missed:
Our copper nickel flanges are produced to ASME B16.5, EEMUA 234, and BS 4504, in both 90/10 and 70/30 grades, and can be bundled with Cu-Ni pipe, fittings, and stud bolt kits for a single shipment.
Above 400°C, two things change: the allowable stress of carbon steel drops sharply, and creep becomes a design consideration. For boiler, superheater, and steam line applications, the standard transition is from ASTM A105 (carbon) to ASTM A182 F11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) at around 450°C, and onward to F22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) and F91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) for headers and main steam lines.
For high-temperature flanges, always:
Our gasket stud bolt nut kits are sized to match our flanges, so a single PO covers the flange, the gasket, and the bolting — including the correct torque procedure on request.
A flange that arrives on site without its gasket, stud bolts, and matching pipe fittings is a procurement failure, not a delivery. Specifying each component separately — and from different suppliers — is the most common cause of dimensional mismatch on site. The studs are too long for the gasket thickness, or the weld neck bore doesn't match the pipe schedule, or the raised face finish differs between the two flanges being bolted together.
A bundled supply — flange + gasket + stud bolt + matching pipe fittings + the pipe itself — eliminates most of these issues. As a single-source supplier covering 8 product categories, EZ Steel Industrial can quote, manufacture, and ship a full piping package from a single PO.
Quick specification checklist: design pressure and temperature → medium and water chemistry → pressure class (150 / 300 / 600 / 900 / 1500 / 2500) → material grade and heat-treatment condition → facing type (RF / FF / RTJ / tongue-and-groove) → matching gasket and stud bolt → required certifications (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2, NACE MR0175, PED, ASME U-stamp).
If you have a piping package to specify, send us your line class or material take-off and we will return a matched quotation covering flanges, fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and the connecting pipe. Our 30+ years of mill experience, ISO 9001 certified laboratory, and API / EN / ASME qualified production mean that what we quote is what arrives on site.
