A practical guide for engineers, EPC contractors, and procurement teams selecting the right austenitic stainless steel pipe for refineries, power plants, and chemical facilities.
Choosing the right stainless steel pipe for a process line is rarely a single-spec decision. Temperature, chloride exposure, pressure cycling, weld procedure, and certification scope all narrow the field of acceptable grades. Engineers who treat stainless steel as one generic material often end up replacing pipe well before design life. The goal of this guide is to walk through the specification logic so your next project gets it right the first time.
Carbon steel remains the workhorse for low-corrosion service lines, but once a system carries chlorides, sour hydrocarbons, hot condensate, or superheated steam, stainless steel becomes the rational choice. The chromium-rich passive film on austenitic grades (typically 18% Cr and above) self-repairs in oxygenated service, slowing general corrosion by orders of magnitude versus uncoated carbon steel.
For most hydrocarbon, boiler feed, and chemical processing lines operating above 200°C or exposed to trace chlorides, austenitic stainless steel typically delivers a service life several times longer than unprotected carbon steel, often reaching 30+ years in well-designed systems.
Grade selection is where most specification errors begin. A312 TP304 is the default for many lines, but TP316L, TP321, and TP347 each address specific failure modes. Use the table below as a starting point and then confirm with your corrosion engineer.
| Grade | Best-Suited Service | Key Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / TP304H | General high-temperature pipe, boiler tubes, process water | Prone to pitting in chloride-rich media |
| TP316 / TP316L | Marine environments, chemical dosing lines, pharmaceutical | Still vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking above 60°C in wet chlorides |
| TP321 | Refinery hydrocracker loops, exhaust manifolds | Not recommended for low-temperature heavy-section welds |
| TP347 | Superheater and reheater lines, nuclear auxiliary systems | Higher cost; verify niobium stabilization meets ASME code case |
When in doubt, request the Mill Test Report (MTR) and confirm that the heat treatment condition matches the standard you are buying against. A pipe marked TP304H but delivered in an annealed-only condition will fail under creep loading.
ASTM A312 covers three production routes, and each has a place. Seamless pipe is preferred for high-pressure and high-temperature headers where weld seam quality cannot be fully verified. Welded pipe, produced by automatic welding without filler metal, is the economical choice for lower-pressure process lines and is fully acceptable when paired with 100% radiographic or eddy current testing. Heavily cold worked pipe offers higher strength for hydraulic and instrumentation service.
For refinery and power plant piping operating above 3 MPa, specifying seamless pressure tubes remains the conservative baseline. Many EPC firms, however, accept welded A312 pipe for hydrotested sub-3 MPa service with documented weld-procedure qualification.
A quality pipe is not just the right grade — it is the right grade with traceable testing. At minimum, every stainless pipe shipment should include:
Skipping any of these is a common short-term cost saving that translates into expensive field failures. A reliable mill or distributor will hand over all of the above without you having to ask twice.
Stainless steel pipe quality is heavily influenced by upstream control of the billet, hot-working temperature windows, and pickling passivation chemistry. Mills that operate the full process — from melt to finished pipe — can lock in chemistry consistency and surface finish, while trading houses that simply resell pipe rarely have visibility past the heat number on the tag.
This is also where project-level support makes a difference. On multi-line projects, you will frequently need matched pipe fittings, flanges, and gaskets sourced from the same material batch to avoid galvanic compatibility headaches during commissioning. A supplier that stocks or co-ordinates these families can shave weeks off the procurement schedule.
The pipe itself is only one part of a working joint. Stainless flanges must match the pipe grade to prevent preferential attack at the flange face, and the gasket must be selected for both temperature and fluid compatibility. Spiral-wound gaskets with graphite or PTFE fillers are the common default for A312 pipe in refinery and chemical service. For cryogenic or highly oxidizing media, ring-type joint (RTJ) gaskets are sometimes preferred.
When the line transitions to pipe flanges in mixed materials — for example, stainless pipe to a carbon steel manifold at a battery limit — consider dielectric isolation kits to break the galvanic path. This single detail has saved countless offshore platforms from accelerated crevice corrosion.
Even experienced teams make the same handful of errors. Watch for these before you release a purchase order:
The lowest per-metre price rarely translates into the lowest installed cost. A mill or distributor that helps you optimize wall thickness, ships cut-to-length pieces with accurate MTRs, and stocks the matching industrial valves and fittings can quietly save a project several percentage points of total piping cost. That is the real value to look for when qualifying a stainless pipe supplier.
On mega-projects, the relationship is even more important: a supplier that has shipped to your plant before will already have your welding procedure qualifications, your QA documentation format, and your expediting team on speed dial. That institutional knowledge is hard to put a price on, but it shows up the first time a delivery is challenged at the site warehouse.
