A practical guide for buyers, EPC contractors, and maintenance teams selecting the right austenitic stainless steel pipe for refineries, power plants, chemical facilities, and marine installations.
Specifying the right stainless steel pipe for an industrial project is rarely as simple as picking a size off a chart. The wrong grade, the wrong manufacturing route, or a missing test requirement can all turn a routine procurement into a multi-week shutdown once the line goes into service. This guide walks through what a serious buyer needs to lock down before a purchase order is released.
Before discussing grades, define what the pipe will actually see in operation: design temperature, design pressure, the fluid being transported, and the chloride, sulfide, or acid content of that fluid. A line carrying demineralized water at 80°C is a completely different specification from a line carrying wet sour hydrocarbon at 320°C. The same logic applies to carbon steel pipe used in low-pressure service, but the consequences of misapplication are usually more visible on stainless pipe because the buyer is paying for corrosion resistance that may or may not be appropriate.
For high-temperature refinery and power plant service, ASTM A312/A312M is the most common specification covering seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe. The standard includes both metric (A312M) and inch-pound (A312) versions, and covers nominal-wall as well as minimum-wall thicknesses, which gives engineers a clear basis for ordering.
Within the A312 family, the most frequently ordered grades are TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321, TP347, and TP310S. Each solves a different problem:
TP304 and TP304L are the workhorses for general corrosive service at moderate temperatures. The "L" variant, with carbon capped at 0.030%, is preferred for welded service because it resists sensitization and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone.
TP316/316L adds 2–3% molybdenum, which markedly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments such as coastal cooling lines and chemical processing plants.
TP321 (titanium-stabilized) and TP347 (niobium-stabilized) are designed for elevated-temperature service where ordinary 304/316 would be prone to intergranular corrosion after long exposure in the sensitization range.
TP310S, with higher chromium and nickel, handles the most demanding high-temperature oxidation and carburization environments seen in ethylene cracking and reformer outlets.
A312 allows three manufacturing routes: seamless, welded (without filler metal), and heavily cold-worked. Each carries different cost, lead time, and mechanical property profiles.
Seamless pipe is the default for high-pressure and high-temperature service where any weld seam is a potential weak point. It is hot- or cold-worked from a billet, and is the natural choice for boiler tubes, superheater lines, and refinery hydroprocessing.
Welded pipe is produced by automatic welding without filler metal and must pass nondestructive testing on the seam. It is typically more economical in larger diameters and is widely used for low- and medium-pressure fluid transport, structural applications, and general process piping. A249/A249M covers stainless welded tubes specifically for boiler and condenser service.
Cold-worked pipe is used when enhanced strength and tighter dimensional tolerances are required, often in heat exchanger and instrument tubing.
All A312 grades require solution annealing followed by rapid cooling. Skipping this step, or accepting a sub-critical anneal in the name of faster delivery, can leave the pipe in a sensitized condition and vulnerable to intergranular attack. The mill certificate should clearly state the solution annealing temperature and the cooling method.
Testing is the other area where purchase orders are often written too loosely. A complete order should specify hydrostatic testing or an accepted nondestructive alternative (eddy current, ultrasonic, or radiographic for welded pipe), plus the mechanical tests required for the grade: tensile, hardness, flattening, flare, or bend tests as applicable. Chemical analysis must be reported per heat or per lot.
Every pipe should arrive with a mill test certificate (MTR) traceable to the heat number, and each pipe should be marked with the manufacturer's name or logo, the grade, the heat number, the size and schedule, and the ASTM standard. The marking is not decorative; it is what allows traceability if a failure is ever investigated in service.
For buyers sourcing complete piping packages, it is worth confirming that the same mill can also supply the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges in the same material family. Mixing grades between the pipe and the fittings is one of the most common causes of premature galvanic or weld-side failures. A single-source supplier with full-cycle manufacturing, from raw material inspection through final NDT, removes that risk.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing industrial steel pipe and tube in Hunan, China since 1994. The company holds API, EN, and ASME certifications and runs an ISO 9001-certified laboratory. Annual capacity is above 480,000 tons, with more than 500 professionals covering production, QA, and project engineering.
The stainless steel line covers pressure tubes, pipeline works, and structure works under ASTM, EN, JIS, GOST, and GB/T standards, including A312/A312M, A249/A249M, A269/A269M, EN 10216-5, JIS G3463, and GB/T 13296. For projects that also need complementary components, the same source can deliver heat efficiency tubes such as U-bend and finned tubes, along with industrial valves, gaskets, stud bolts, and nuts, allowing a single point of accountability for the entire piping package.
Bottom line: Good stainless steel pipe procurement is about controlling the variables that matter, which are grade, manufacturing route, heat treatment, testing, and traceability. Lock those down in the purchase order, and the pipe will perform as designed for the full design life of the system.
