Specifying stainless steel pipe is rarely a one-line decision. The grade you write into a datasheet determines whether a refinery header survives a chloride spike, whether a food-grade line passes its next sanitary audit, and whether a shipboard cooling loop makes its next dry-dock interval. This walkthrough breaks down how to match standard, grade, and joining method to real service conditions — and how to keep the surrounding pipe fittings and industrial valves consistent with the pipe you have selected.
Every stainless steel line in a plant starts with four questions: what is being carried, at what temperature and pressure, in what atmosphere, and under what code. Once those answers are written down, the standard almost selects itself. A line carrying demineralised water at 80 °C under ASME B31.3 has very different requirements from a superheater tube in a 540 °C boiler section or a 90/10 copper-nickel cooling line on a chemical tanker. The catalogue page can wait until the envelope is fixed.
That envelope then drives the standard. EZ Steel Industrial supplies stainless pipe manufactured to ASTM A312, ASTM A269, EN 10216-5, JIS G3463, GB/T 13296, and GOST 9941 / 9940, with each standard designed for a different family of services. Matching the right standard to the envelope is the single biggest lever a specifier has over both compliance and total cost.
ASTM A312 is the workhorse for austenitic stainless pipe in high-temperature and corrosive service, covering seamless, welded, and cold-worked product from TP304 through TP316H, TP321, TP347, and duplex grades. For tighter instrumentation, heat-exchanger, and sanitary tubing, ASTM A269 / A213 controls dimensions, surface finish, and NDT requirements. EN 10216-5 covers 1.4301 to 1.4571 seamless tubes for pressure and heat service in European plant work, while JIS G3463 (STB340, STBA22 and similar) is the reference for boiler and heat-exchanger pipe in Asian-built facilities.
When a project travels across regions — for example, EPC work in the Middle East using Chinese fabricators — it is common to dual-spec A312 / EN 10216-5 / GB/T 13296. EZ Steel Industrial routinely supplies to this kind of multi-standard brief because its mill network and ISO 9001 lab are already aligned to API, EN, and ASME expectations.
For a typical stainless steel pipe order, four grades cover the majority of duty. TP304 / 304H handles general atmospheric and mildly corrosive service, with 304H preferred for sustained high-temperature work above 500 °C thanks to its controlled carbon. TP316 / 316L is the default for chloride-bearing environments, including coastal process piping, pharmaceutical purified water, and many food and beverage lines. Where welded fabrication is heavy, the lower carbon of 316L avoids sensitisation in the heat-affected zone.
For higher temperatures and aggressive chemistries, TP321 (Ti-stabilised) and TP347 (Nb-stabilised) resist intergranular corrosion in the 500–700 °C band, which is exactly the range of cracker and reformer outlet piping. When chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking are real risks — desalination preheaters, offshore process cooling, high-pressure seawater injection — lean or super duplex grades such as S32750 step in, delivering roughly double the pitting resistance number of 316L.
A common specifier mistake is to lock the pipe standard and then forget that the pipe fittings and industrial valves belong to the same pressure boundary. A TP316L header with carbon-steel weldolet fittings or cast-iron valves will fail long before the pipe does, and it will do so without warning. The safer approach is to specify the fitting standard and pressure class in the same paragraph as the pipe: for example, “TP316L pipe to ASTM A312, BW fittings to ASTM A403 in matching WP grade, valves to API 602 / API 600 in trim matched to service.”
For a typical stainless line, the cleanest fit is a buttweld system: ASTM A403 WP-W or WP-S fittings in 304L / 316L, with butt-weld ends prepared to ASME B16.25. In smaller-bore stainless work, socket-weld fittings to ASME B16.11 are common in high-pressure instrument and drain lines, while threaded 3000 lb / 6000 lb fittings are reserved for low-pressure utility and trim where welding is impractical. Choosing the wrong joining system is one of the most common reasons a stainless line ends up with crevice corrosion or vibration fatigue cracking in service.
| Joining system | Typical service | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Butt-weld (BW) fittings | Process and utility piping, high-pressure, high-temperature | Default for austenitic stainless lines ≥ 2”; clean radiography, no crevices. |
| Socket-weld (SW) fittings | Small-bore high-pressure lines, instrument and drain | Use on NPS 1/2” to 2” where disassembly and vibration resistance are required. |
| Threaded fittings | Low-pressure utility, water, air, oil trim | Limit to non-critical, non-cyclic service; avoid in chloride service. |
| Flanged joints (companion flanges) | Equipment connections, valve removal points | Specify stainless or copper-nickel flanges with bolts matched to the gasket style. |
Once the grade and standard are fixed, three documents need to be agreed before manufacture starts. First, a dimensional brief covering outside diameter, wall thickness, length, and end finish. EZ Steel Industrial routinely supplies stainless pipe in OD 6 mm to 762 mm with custom cut lengths and bevelled ends to ASME B16.25. Second, the testing scope: hydrostatic test, eddy current or ultrasonic NDT, intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 (for grades where it applies), and positive material identification on heat-critical lots.
Third, the certification pack. A useful stainless pipe mill test certificate should report the heat number, full chemical analysis, mechanical properties, NDT results, heat-treatment condition, and any supplementary tests the project requires. Bundling this with the matching gasket stud bolt nut documentation for the flanged joints means the receiving warehouse can match every component back to the same pressure boundary on day one.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing industrial steel tube, pipe fittings, flanges, and valves from its base in Changsha, China since 1994. The company operates with 500+ technical staff and an annual output of more than 480,000 units, holding API, EN, and ASME certifications and an ISO 9001 accredited laboratory. Its heat efficiency tubes line, which includes both U-bend and finned tube configurations, shares the same metallurgical discipline and mill traceability as the stainless pipe programme, so a heat-exchanger bundle can be ordered with matching tubes, return bends, headers, and tube-sheet quality from a single supplier.
The company’s experience includes landmark Chinese projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical plant piping, and modern vessel metal pipeline systems, alongside export work into marine, power, and chemical construction. For specifiers, the practical consequence is that a multi-line stainless brief — process pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolts, and valves — can be packaged, tested, and shipped against one quality plan, instead of being assembled from three or four separate procurement streams.
Before releasing an enquiry, run the brief against this short list. It is the same checklist EZ Steel Industrial’s technical team uses internally when reviewing a stainless pipe enquiry from a new project.
A stainless steel line is only as good as its weakest joint. Spend the time at the start to match the standard to the service, the grade to the chemistry, and the fittings and valves to the same pressure boundary as the pipe, and the line will run for decades with very little attention. Cut corners on any of those three and the maintenance budget will fund the difference for the rest of the plant’s life. EZ Steel Industrial’s combined stainless, fitting, flange, and valve programme exists precisely to make that first, careful specification easier to execute in practice.
