A field-tested engineering walkthrough for project buyers, EPCs and plant engineers sourcing austenitic stainless steel piping from a full-cycle Chinese manufacturer.
Every piping project eventually arrives at the same question: which stainless steel pipe grade, schedule and standard actually fits the service? A wrong choice rarely shows up on the datasheet review — it shows up three years later as pitting at a weld, a leak at a flange face, or a tube bundle that has to be replaced during a planned turnaround. For buyers working on petrochemical, power, marine, food or hygienic process lines, the selection has to start with the service environment, not the catalog number.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing austenitic and duplex stainless piping in Hunan, China since 1994, with API, EN and ASME certifications and an annual output above 480,000 tons. This article walks through how our engineering team helps specifiers narrow down a stainless steel pipe specification that survives real service — not just the inspection certificate.
Pipe selection that begins with “TP316L because that’s what we always use” is how budget overruns start. Before any standard is chosen, the following five service parameters must be fixed on paper:
Only when these five points are locked can a project team move from “stainless” to a specific grade, schedule and standard. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL uses this same five-point frame when a customer sends in an inquiry, because the cheapest grade that meets service is the right grade — the most expensive grade is rarely so.
The standard tells the mill exactly what chemistry, mechanical properties, NDT and tolerance the pipe must hit. For austenitic stainless pressure and process piping, three standards cover roughly 90% of the inquiries we receive:
| Standard | Typical Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless, welded and cold-worked austenitic pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service | Most common for process piping in oil & gas, chemical, food |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Seamless ferritic and austenitic boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes | Used for pressure tubes inside fired heaters and exchangers |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless stainless tubes for pressure purposes (1.4301, 1.4404, 1.4571, etc.) | Required for PED / CE-marked European projects |
The manufacturing route is then a question of service severity:
On our shop floor we run both seamless cold-drawing lines and welded lines with online solution annealing and pickling, so buyers can switch routes without re-sourcing.
Grade selection is where the most expensive mistakes happen. The most common austenitic grades, and where each one earns its place, are summarized below.
A 18Cr-8Ni austenitic grade with good resistance to atmospheric corrosion and a wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals. The low-carbon “L” variant (≤0.030% C) is mandatory when the line will be welded and operated in the 400–800 °C sensitization range, to prevent intergranular corrosion. We supply TP304/304L per ASTM A312, A213, A249 and EN 10216-5, in schedules 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S.
Adding 2–3% molybdenum pushes chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance up significantly. For coastal process lines, desalination, offshore platforms and any line carrying brackish water or low-chloride hydrocarbons, 316L is usually the right starting point. Our 316L pipe has been shipped into the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and into several seawater cooling systems.
When the line sees sustained 500–800 °C, TP321 (Ti-stabilized) and TP347 (Nb-stabilized) resist intergranular attack without depending on the low-carbon guarantee. They are common in refinery hydrocracker loops, ethylene cracking and boiler internal piping.
For high-pressure seawater injection, hot chloride brine and offshore firewater risers, duplex grades roughly double the yield strength of 316L while offering superior pitting resistance (PREN ≥ 35). We supply 2205 and 2507 in both pipe and tube form to ASTM A789/A790 specifications.
For stainless piping, schedules follow ASME B36.19M (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) rather than the carbon-steel ASME B36.10M. The most-asked sizes in our daily order book sit between NPS ½ and NPS 12.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 5S wall (mm) | Sch 10S wall (mm) | Sch 40S wall (mm) | Sch 80S wall (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ½ | 21.3 | 1.65 | 2.11 | 2.77 | 3.73 |
| 1 | 33.4 | 1.65 | 2.77 | 3.38 | 4.55 |
| 2 | 60.3 | 1.65 | 2.77 | 3.91 | 5.54 |
| 4 | 114.3 | 2.11 | 3.05 | 6.02 | 8.56 |
| 6 | 168.3 | 2.77 | 3.40 | 7.11 | 10.97 |
| 8 | 219.1 | 2.77 | 3.76 | 8.18 | 12.70 |
| 12 | 323.9 | 3.96 | 4.57 | 9.53 | 17.48 |
For hygienic and pharmaceutical lines, tighter OD, wall and ovality tolerances (often inside half of the ASME B36.19M envelope) are usually required to make orbital welding and sanitary ferrules fit first time. Our mill can hold OD to ±0.25% and wall to ±8% on request, with full length and straightness reports attached to each heat lot.
A clean stainless steel pipe arrives on site with a full traceability stack. At minimum, our shipments leave the mill with:
On a 2024 refinery turnaround in Southeast Asia, a contractor received two shipments of “316L” pipe from two different mills. Only the PMI gun at site caught that one lot was actually 304. Catching it on receipt saved roughly 14 days of replacement time. Documentation alone doesn’t stop this — mill-level PMI discipline does.
A pipe is only as good as the joint next to it. Specifying stainless steel pipe in isolation is a common reason project bundles arrive on site mismatched. At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL we keep the same heat-lot traceability running across our pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves, so a 316L weldolet, a 316L weld-neck flange and a 316L ball valve arrive on the same skid with matching certificates.
For small-bore high-pressure stainless lines (½"–2"), socket-weld fittings are typically the right answer; for 2" and above, butt-weld fittings dominate. Threaded stainless fittings are reserved for utility water and low-pressure instrument air, because galling and crevice corrosion make them a poor fit for process services. Our engineering team can pre-build the full bolt-up: pipe + fittings + flanges + spiral-wound or RTJ gaskets + stud bolt and nut, all on one packing list.
Buyers often ask us where stainless stops being the most economical answer. The honest answer is that for clean dry gas, low-pressure firewater and structural use, carbon steel pipe (ASTM A106, A53, API 5L) still wins on cost. For seawater cooling and shipbuilding, 90/10 copper nickel alloy is often the better pick because of biofouling resistance and lower life-cycle cost. Stainless sits in the middle: more expensive than carbon, but cheaper than exotic nickel alloys, and the only option for many hygienic, chloride-bearing and high-temperature services.
| Service | Typical First-Choice Material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dry instrument air, plant air | Carbon steel A106 / A53 | Low cost, no corrosion driver |
| Potable water, firewater mains | Galvanized carbon or 304 stainless | Balance of cost and corrosion resistance |
| Chemical, food, pharma process | 304L / 316L stainless | Hygienic, cleanable, weldable |
| Seawater cooling, shipbuilding | 90/10 copper-nickel | Biofouling resistance, proven in service |
| Hot chloride, sour hydrocarbon | Duplex 2205 / super-duplex 2507 | Strength + chloride pitting resistance |
Specifying a pipe is one thing; receiving it on site, on time, with documentation that passes the customer’s audit, is the harder job. Three things tend to make the difference on stainless pipe projects:
If you are starting a new stainless steel pipe specification, send us your line class, datasheet and quantities — we will return a mill-side proposal with grade, schedule, standard, testing plan and lead time within one working day.
