A single shut-off decision in a power plant, a refinery, or a seawater cooling line can swing the safety, uptime, and operating cost of an entire facility. Yet many procurement teams still treat industrial valves as a commodity line item. This guide walks through what really matters when you specify, source, and integrate valves into a working piping system.
Valves are not standalone products. They live at the joint between pressure tubes, flanged connections, and the instrumentation that monitors flow. A gate valve that looks fine on its own can become a leak path if the mating flange is a different facing type, or a maintenance headache if the stud bolt grade is off. This is why experienced EPC contractors prefer to procure pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, and valves as one coordinated package from a single supplier.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, founded in 1994 and headquartered in Changsha, China, has been building this kind of bundled supply capability for more than 30 years. The company ships 480,000+ tons of pipe, fittings, flanges, and industrial valves per year to power, petrochemical, marine, and infrastructure projects worldwide.
Most process lines can be built with six core valve families. Each one solves a different control problem, and choosing the wrong one is the most common cause of chronic leakage, water hammer, or premature seat wear.
A gate valve uses a wedge or parallel gate that moves perpendicular to the flow. It is designed for fully open or fully closed service, with minimal pressure drop in the open position. Specify gate valves for mainline isolation in water supply, hydrocarbon transmission, and the large-diameter pressure tubes feeding utility boilers. They are not suited to throttling.
Ball valves use a bored sphere rotated a quarter turn to open or close. The compact, tight-shutoff design handles slurry, gas, and clean process fluids equally well. For small-bore instrument lines, chemical dosing skids, and quick-isolated sample points, ball valves are usually the first choice.
A butterfly valve rotates a disc inside the bore. Compared to gate or ball valves of the same size, it is lighter, faster to operate, and far less expensive at DN 300 and above. Use butterfly valves in cooling water loops, HVAC, fire protection, and large-diameter water intake or discharge lines.
Check valves prevent reverse flow using a swing, lift, or dual-disc mechanism. They protect pumps from backflow damage and keep process streams from contaminating each other during shutdowns. Swing checks are common on liquid lines, while dual-plate wafer checks are favored on gas and vapor service.
Globe valves regulate flow with a plug moving against a seat. They offer the best throttling accuracy of any valve family, at the cost of a higher pressure drop. They belong on bypass loops, level control lines, and any location where stable, fine adjustment matters more than minimum restriction.
Pressure relief valves are safety devices, not flow-control devices. They must be sized, certified, and sealed to a recognized standard such as ASME Section VIII or API 520/521. Sourcing them separately from the process valves, and documenting the set pressure on the nameplate, is a routine part of pressure-vessel and boiler package procurement.
Material is the single biggest driver of valve life. A carbon steel gate valve that lasts 20 years in a fire-water line may fail in months in sour hydrocarbon service. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL produces valve bodies and trim across the full spectrum of process metallurgy, and the right starting point is always the service condition.
A serious valve quotation should reference, at minimum, the design standard, the material standard, the testing standard, and the third-party inspection body. For a refinery or power plant bid, expect to see API 600 or API 602 for gate and globe valves, API 6D for line valves, ASME B16.34 for general purpose, and ISO 15848 for low-emission fugitive service. Material traceability has to be backed by an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships API, EN, and ASME-certified pipe and pipe fittings from an ISO 9001 audited lab, and supports ASME and AWS welding qualifications for fabricated assemblies. For projects requiring steel flanges in carbon, stainless, or alloy grades, the same documentation chain applies: heat number, MTC, NDT report, and hydrostatic test record travel with every shipment.
Before a procurement officer opens a single RFQ, the specification should answer four questions: which fluid, at what pressure and temperature, with what fire-safety or emission requirement, and with which flange or weld end. From there, the workflow narrows quickly.
A valve that is technically correct but delivered six weeks late still becomes a project risk. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL maintains a strategic stock of ASTM A106, A53, and A312 grades alongside its industrial valves, so the pressure piping that arrives on site and the valve that drops into the line come from the same quality system, the same documentation chain, and often the same container. The company has supplied material to landmark projects including the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, and large-scale petrochemical and marine builds. That track record is worth more than a small price difference on a unit quote.
If you are scoping a new project or rebuilding a vendor list, request a quotation that covers the full piping package. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can supply industrial valves, pipe fittings, steel flanges, and pressure tubes as one coordinated supply, backed by full MTC traceability.
