Specifying an industrial valves line on a process diagram is the easy part of any pipeline project. The hard part is making sure every flange, gasket, fitting and pipe spool that sits between two flanged valves actually shows up on the dock, on the same heat number, on the same MTR, and on the same delivery window. This playbook walks through how EPCs, plant owners and procurement teams should think about valves as part of a matched pipe package — and where the most common mismatches happen.
A procurement specification for a Class 600 ball valve is rarely satisfied by the ball valve itself. The same work pack will pull in line pipe, matching weld fittings, raised-face flanges, ring joint gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and on the actuation side sometimes a smaller industrial valves line for instrumentation. If those items arrive on three different vessels from three different mills, the field crew spends weeks reconciling MTRs, painting systems and traceability codes before a single weld is struck.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, a Changsha-based manufacturer with more than 30 years of mill experience and an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, builds its offer around exactly that problem. The company runs eight product lines from a single engineering base: carbon and carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket stud bolt nut sets, and valves. That breadth is what allows a project package to be consolidated under one MTR stack and one delivery schedule.
Before you talk to a valve supplier, it helps to think in five matched blocks. Each one is a place where a small mismatch turns into a large field rework later.
A Class 600 gate valve on a sour gas line still has to connect to a pipe that meets the same sour service rules. Carbon steel pipe for hydrocarbon service is usually specified to API 5L PSL2 with supplemental SR18 sour service, while high-temperature refinery service is more often ASTM A106/A106M Grade B or C. For aggressive chloride or seawater service, the line moves to austenitic stainless to ASTM A312/A312M or to a 90/10 copper-nickel per EEMUA 234. The valve body material and the pipe material need to be metallurgically compatible in the galvanic series; otherwise the joint becomes the weak link.
Direction changes and size transitions around a valve cluster are almost always handled by butt weld fittings. Forged ASME B16.11 fittings are the go-to for Class 600 and above because the bore matches the pipe schedule and the wall thickness matches the line. For instrument air, lube oil and utility water at lower pressure, threaded or socket-weld fittings are faster to install and easier to rework. Matching the fitting standard to the valve end connection is one of the most common specification errors in valve procurement, and it is also one of the cheapest to get right up front.
A flanged industrial valves body is only as good as the flanges on either side. Pipe flanges have to match the valve on pressure class, face type, bore and material. A Weld Neck Raised Face ASME B16.5 Class 150 flange on a stainless line pipe is not the same flange as a Class 150 flat face for a cast iron water main. Carbon steel flanges dominate hydrocarbon service; stainless steel and duplex flanges take over once chloride, sour service or offshore duty enters the picture. Copper-nickel flanges are reserved for marine and seawater cooling where dezincification and biofouling drive material choice.
Every flanged valve needs a matched gasket stud bolt nut set. Spiral wound gaskets with graphite or PTFE filler cover the bulk of Class 150 to Class 600 service. Ring Type Joint gaskets take over from Class 600 upward in oil and gas. Stud bolt grade has to be matched to the flange class and the service temperature — B7/B7M for carbon steel, B8/B8M for stainless, L7/L7M for low temperature. Mixing a Class 150 gasket with Class 300 bolting is a common shortcut that quietly costs a turnaround.
Sour gas, chemical injection, instrument air and small-bore utility lines are usually stainless steel pipe in 304/L, 316/L or duplex grades. Specifying ASTM A312/A312M for process and ASTM A269/A269M for instrument tubing keeps the small-bore line coherent with the main line, which simplifies welding procedure qualification on site.
Once the five building blocks are clear, the valve selection itself becomes much simpler. The seven types below cover the bulk of what EPCs order.
Standards are where a valve line either holds together or falls apart. The table below shows the minimum set of standards that need to be aligned across a typical hydrocarbon package. If any of these rows drift, the package will not weld up cleanly at site.
| Item | Primary Standard | What to Align Across the Package |
|---|---|---|
| Gate, ball, check valves | API 6D, API 600 | Pressure class, face-to-face per ASME B16.10, body material |
| Steel pipe flanges | ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47 | Class, face type, bore, weld neck versus slip-on |
| Butt weld fittings | ASME B16.9 | Schedule, material grade, end bevel |
| Forged fittings | ASME B16.11 | Class rating, socket weld versus threaded, material |
| Carbon and alloy line pipe | API 5L, ASTM A106, ASTM A53 | PSL level, grade, sour service supplement |
| Stainless line pipe | ASTM A312/A312M, ASTM A269/A269M | Grade, finish, solution anneal condition |
| Gaskets | ASME B16.20, ASME B16.21 | Class, face type, filler material |
| Stud bolts and nuts | ASME B16.5, ASTM A193, ASTM A194 | Grade, plating, length |
| Valve testing | API 598, ISO 5208 | Shell, seat, backseat, fire test if required |
| Sour service | NACE MR0175 / MR0103 | Hardness limits and material qualification |
Valve body material does not exist in isolation. It has to be metallurgically compatible with the line pipe, the flanges, the bolting and the medium. The five families below cover the vast majority of project valves.
A practical rule of thumb: specify the line pipe and the valve body material in the same line of the datasheet. If the pipe is ASTM A106 Grade B and the valve is WCB, the package is internally consistent. If the pipe is A312 TP316L and the valve is WCB, the procurement team is going to spend the next two months chasing waivers.
Industrial valves are typically accompanied by four layers of test documentation. None of them are optional for oil and gas service.
For LNG, fire protection or sour service, add cryogenic test per BS 6364, fire test per API 607 or API 6FA, and fugitive emissions test per ISO 15848 or API 624. A vendor that can produce all of these documents against one consolidated MTR stack is one that can deliver a full valve package, not just a single body casting.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and valves into flagship infrastructure such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical plant piping, vessel piping systems, marine construction works, foundation piling, boiler tube bundles and steam power plant piping. Those references matter because they show the company can hold MTRs across a multi-product line under a single QA system rather than the buyer stitching together five different mills.
A typical bundled package from EZ will line up the industrial valves body and trim with the matching carbon steel pipe or stainless steel pipe spool, the pipe flanges, the butt weld fittings and the gasket stud bolt nut sets on a single shipping release. ISO 9001 controls the mill test laboratory, and ASME and AWS qualified welders handle the welded subassemblies. Buyers receive one set of certificates instead of eight.
None of these are complex engineering problems. They are specification discipline problems, and they all disappear when a single supplier owns the whole package.
An industrial valves line should be sourced as a system, not a parts list. When the same mill provides the line pipe, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges and the gasket stud bolt nut set alongside the valve bodies, the buyer inherits a single QA chain, a single delivery plan and a single point of accountability if something fails in service. That is what a project-centric bundle is supposed to look like, and it is the difference between a valve purchase and a valve package.
Send your datasheet, line class and BOM to the EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL engineering team. The company will return a matched package covering industrial valves, pipe flanges, gasket stud bolt nut sets, butt weld fittings, carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe under one MTR stack, one QA system and one delivery window.
