Choosing the right industrial valves is rarely a single-line item decision. On a real EPC, refinery or shipyard package, the valve is one component of a much larger piping system — and the supplier you pick has to deliver it together with the pipe, the fittings and the flanges that surround it.
If you have ever chased five different suppliers for a single line class — one for the line pipe, one for the elbows, one for the pipe flanges, one for the stud bolts, and one for the gasket, stud bolt & nut set — you already know why bundling matters. Add the valve to that list and the coordination cost alone can eat the saving on the cheapest quote.
This guide walks through the seven major valve types you will see on most oil & gas, petrochemical, power and marine RFQs, the international standards that govern them, the material choices that decide service life, and the practical way to source them as a single mill-direct package. EZ Steel Industrial has been manufacturing industrial steel piping products since 1994, and over three decades of working on South-to-North Water Diversion, West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical and marine projects has shaped how we approach valve sourcing alongside our stainless steel pipe, carbon steel pipe and pipe fittings lines.
A piping spec does not start at the valve — but the valve is usually the first place an engineer locks the pressure class, the face-to-face dimension, the end connection and the material standard. Once those are fixed, every line item around the valve (the mating flanges, the stud bolt length, the gasket type, the pipe schedule) is forced to follow.
This is why the cheapest valve price is rarely the cheapest project cost. If the valve ships from one mill, the flanges from a stockist in Singapore, the elbows from a trading house in Dubai, and the stud bolts from a separate fastener supplier, you are managing four quality systems, four MTR packages, four delivery slots and one set of headaches when something arrives short. A mill-direct industrial valves source that also manufactures the surrounding pipe, fitting and flange product line removes most of that friction.
Almost every industrial valve RFQ you receive can be traced back to one — or a combination — of seven core types. Each one solves a different flow-control problem, and each one has a standard that the inspector will expect to see on the MTR.
Quick reference: function → best application
Isolation → gate or ball. Throttling → globe. Backflow prevention → check. Large-bore low-pressure → butterfly. Slurry / corrosive → plug. Overpressure protection → pressure relief / safety valve.
| Valve type | Function | Typical service | Key standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gate valve | On / off isolation (not for throttling) | Crude oil, natural gas transmission, ASME Class 600+ pipelines | API 600, API 6D, ASME B16.34 |
| Ball valve | Quick shut-off or flow control, quarter-turn | Pipeline isolation, pigging stations, LNG, sour gas | API 6D, API 607, ASME B16.34 |
| Globe valve | Throttling and flow regulation | Pressure control, metering stations, fuel gas systems | ASME B16.34, API 602 |
| Check valve (NRV) | Prevents backflow automatically | Pump discharge, compressor stations, subsea pipelines | API 6D, API 594 |
| Butterfly valve | On / off or throttling in large-bore, low-pressure lines | Water pipelines, fire protection, low-pressure gas distribution | API 609, EN 593, MSS SP-67 |
| Plug valve | On / off or diverting flow | Slurry, corrosive fluids, wellhead control | API 599, ASME B16.34 |
| Pressure relief / safety valve | Protects the system from overpressure | Storage tanks, boilers, compressor stations | ASME Section VIII, API 520 / 521 |
Notice how the standards map overlaps heavily with the steel flanges and pipe fittings on the same line. That overlap is intentional — the valve manufacturer, the flange manufacturer and the fitting manufacturer are all working from the same ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature tables. Sourcing them from one supplier keeps that interpretation consistent.
Most RFQ mistakes we see are not bad valves — they are correct valves in the wrong service. A gate valve is excellent for crude oil transmission but a poor choice for throttling a cooling water line; a globe valve is the right answer for fuel gas regulation but expensive and unnecessary for a simple isolation duty. Use the matrix below as a first-pass filter before you talk to engineering.
| Service / project scenario | Recommended primary valve | Why this choice |
|---|---|---|
| Long-distance crude oil trunk line (ASME Class 600+) | Trunnion-mounted ball valve, API 6D | Quarter-turn closure for pigging; tight sealing; low pressure drop when open |
| Natural gas distribution and city gate stations | Gate valve (API 600) for main, ball valve (API 6D) for branch | Bi-directional sealing on the main; fast isolation on branches |
| Refinery process unit — flow regulation on reboiler circuits | Globe valve | Accurate throttling; good shut-off for maintenance isolation |
| Petrochemical plant — pump discharge protection | Check valve (swing or dual-plate) per API 594 / 6D | Prevents reverse flow on pump trip; protects downstream equipment |
| Marine seawater cooling line | Butterfly valve (wafer or lug), copper nickel flanges, Cu-Ni pipe | Large-bore, low pressure drop; seawater-resistant material set |
| Slurry or mining service | Plug valve (lined or sleeved) | Handles particulates; multi-port options for diverting |
| Boiler feedwater or steam header | Gate valve (high-pressure) + safety valve set | Positive isolation plus overpressure protection per ASME VIII |
For any high-temperature, high-pressure service, the body material discussion moves you directly to our carbon steel pipe and alloy tube lines. The same ASTM A335 P11/P22/P91 grade that we use on the boiler tube side is often the body material for the matching high-pressure industrial valves — and that is one of the quietly important reasons to source the valve from the same supplier as the pipe.
A good mill test report is more than a list of chemical compositions. For valves, the inspector will read down the certificate looking for compliance with a small set of international standards — and your quote is incomplete if any of these are missing.
The standards you should see on every valve MTR
The same logic applies to the rest of the package. A steel flange delivered to ASME B16.5 will mate cleanly to a valve rated to ASME B16.34 — but if the stud bolt length is short or the gasket type does not match the flange face, the joint will leak regardless of how good the valve body is. EZ Steel's valve, fitting and flange lines are all built against the same ASME and EN family of standards, which is what makes the bundled approach work in practice.
Material choice is where a valve either lasts thirty years or fails in three. The standard materials cover most cases, but the edge cases — sour service, seawater, refinery overhead — drive the project to higher alloys or lined bodies.
| Material | Common grade | Best service | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | WCB, LCB, A216 | General hydrocarbon, water, low-corrosion | Not for sour or chloride service without NACE compliance |
| Stainless steel | CF8M, 316 | Corrosive chemicals, high-temperature | Higher cost; specify low-carbon variant for welded service |
| Duplex stainless | UNS S31803 / S32205 | Offshore, sour gas, seawater | Premium cost; long lead time on heavy wall sections |
| Alloy 20 | Carpenter 20 | Sulphuric acid, acidic process | Limited size range; check availability on large-bore |
| Copper-nickel | 90/10, 70/30 | Seawater, firewater, marine cooling | Not for high-pressure hydrocarbon; pairs with copper nickel alloy tube |
| Titanium | Gr. 2 / Gr. 7 | Seawater, chlorides, aggressive chemicals | Very high cost; limited manufacturing capacity globally |
When the project calls for copper-nickel seawater service, the entire system — pipe, flange, fitting and valve — should be specified as a single Cu-Ni material set. Mixing carbon steel flanges into a Cu-Ni line creates galvanic corrosion at the joint. Sourcing the copper nickel flanges, the Cu-Ni pipe, the Cu-Ni fittings and the Cu-Ni valve body from one mill removes that risk by default.
A valve that passes the inspector's hydrostatic test is the baseline, not the ceiling. The real value of a mill-direct valve supplier is what is on the test certificate package — because the test package is what protects you three years after the project is handed over.
The minimum QC package you should expect
If any of those items is missing from the supplier's standard QC package, ask why before you accept the quote. Trading houses often cannot produce the original heat-number MTR — they only have a commercial certificate. A mill-direct manufacturer like EZ Steel can hand you the original MTR because we melted, cast, machined and tested the body in our own facilities.
Industrial piping projects are won and lost on logistics, not just unit price. The supplier that ships the line pipe, the elbows, the steel flanges, the stud bolts and the industrial valves on one boat, in one container, with one set of documents and one point of contact, removes roughly half of the procurement risk that an EPC contractor is paid to manage.
In practice, the bundle looks like this on a typical oil & gas line class package:
For the boiler and heat exchanger side, the same bundle includes pressure tubes to ASTM A192 / A210 / A213, U bend tubes for the heat exchanger return bends, and finned tubes for the air-cooled fin fan section. For the boiler steam side, the matching heat efficiency tubes are part of the same engineering conversation as the boiler stop and safety valves.
Before you sign a valve PO — whether the project is a 50-valve instrument air line or a 5,000-valve refinery unit — run through the following list. Each item protects you against the most common valve RFQ mistakes we have seen across three decades of EPC work.
8-point valve PO verification
Trading houses and distributors are useful in a narrow set of situations — small-quantity spares, one-off replacement valves, urgent emergency replacements. For project volumes, they add cost rather than remove it. Here is why.
A trading house buys from a mill, holds stock, and resells. Every handling stage adds a margin and a documentation handover. The original MTR is often replaced with a commercial certificate. When an inspector asks for the heat number trace, the answer is usually "we will get back to you" — and that delay cascades into the next inspection hold and the next shipping slot. A mill-direct manufacturer — one that casts, machines, assembles, tests and documents the valve in their own facility — can answer that question in the same email.
EZ Steel Industrial has been a mill-direct steel piping products manufacturer since 1994, with 500+ professional staff and an annual capacity of 480,000+ tons across the carbon steel, alloy, stainless steel pipe, copper nickel alloy, heat efficiency tube, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket/stud bolt and valve product lines. Our valves are integrated into that manufacturing chain — heat numbers, MTR packages, ASME and EN compliance, and test certificates all originate from the same quality system.
The valve product line at EZ Steel has been qualified into the kinds of projects where bundle reliability matters most: long-distance hydrocarbon transmission, large-scale water diversion, petrochemical plant piping, steam power plant headers, and marine vessel cooling systems.
A few examples of the service envelope our valves ship into alongside the rest of the package:
Industrial valves are the most spec-heavy component on most piping RFQs — and the most likely to be mismatched against the line class, the fluid service, or the surrounding components. Get the type right first (isolation, throttling, backflow, overpressure), lock the standard (API 6D, API 600, ASME B16.34, NACE MR0175), confirm the material, and verify the QC package before you sign.
Then look at the broader package. If the same mill that makes the valve also makes the pipeline works pipe, the elbows, the steel flanges, the stud bolts and the gaskets, the procurement risk drops noticeably and the project timeline gets a few weeks back. That is the real value of mill-direct bundled sourcing, and it is how EZ Steel Industrial has supported EPC contractors, refinery operators and shipyards since 1994.
