Catalogs list industrial valves by type and pressure class. Real projects demand more: they ask whether the valve will hold tight on a sour-gas line, survive a -46°C LNG cooldown, and pass an API 6D fire test without leaking. After 30 years supplying pipe, fittings and flanges into refineries, power plants and shipyards, here is how we help procurement teams match industrial valves to the service they actually run in.
The first question we ask a buyer is rarely "gate or ball?" It is "what fluid, at what temperature, at what pressure class, with what corrosion allowance?" A 150# gate valve that works perfectly in a cooling-water header will fail in less than two years in a hydrocracker overhead line. The valve body may be the same nominal size, but the metallurgical and sealing demands are completely different.
For a refinery client in the Middle East, the initial RFQ asked for API 600 gate valves on a 24-inch crude unit. Once we reviewed the operating data, the actual requirement was NACE MR0175-compliant trim, body in A216 WCB with full hard-facing on the seat surfaces, and a double block and bleed configuration. That conversation saved the client from installing valves that would have been out of service within eighteen months.
A modern industrial valve catalog covers more than a dozen designs, but in oil and gas, marine, and power projects, seven types carry roughly 95% of the work. Knowing which type fits which job is the first step in any sourcing decision.
| Valve Type | Primary Function | Typical Project Use | Key Watch-Out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gate Valve | On/off isolation | Crude oil, natural gas transmission, ASME Class 600+ | Never use for throttling; erosion on partial open |
| Ball Valve | Quarter-turn shut-off | Pipeline isolation, pigging stations, LNG, sour gas | Cavitation risk at high pressure drop |
| Globe Valve | Throttling and flow regulation | Pressure control, metering, fuel gas | Higher pressure drop than gate or ball |
| Check Valve | Prevents backflow | Pump discharge, compressor stations, subsea lines | Water hammer risk on slow-closing designs |
| Butterfly Valve | On/off or moderate throttling | Low-pressure gas, water, fire protection | Not for high-pressure or high-temperature duty |
| Plug Valve | On/off or flow diverting | Slurry, corrosive fluids, wellhead control | High torque required on large sizes |
| Pressure Relief / Safety Valve | Overpressure protection | Storage tanks, boilers, compressor stations | Set pressure must be re-verified after every overhaul |
For LNG receiving terminals we typically recommend trunnion-mounted ball valves in ASTM A351 CF8M body with PTFE or RPTFE seats, while for a seawater cooling line on a shipyard project the same duty would be handled by a 90/10 copper-nickel butterfly valve matched to copper nickel alloy pipe. The valve type changes with the application; the discipline of matching it to the fluid does not.
Material selection often makes the difference between a valve that runs for twenty years and one that fails its first hydrostatic test on the bench. We follow three rules when we help clients pick body and trim materials.
For one offshore platform rebuild, the client originally specified carbon steel globe valves in the firewater system. We recommended a switch to super-duplex bodies (UNS S32750) to match the 25-year design life of the platform. The unit cost went up, but the lifecycle cost fell because the platform avoided a planned mid-life valve replacement shutdown.
Buyers often ask which standard "covers" a valve. The honest answer is that oil and gas valves usually have to satisfy three or four standards at the same time. The most common ones our project teams reference are listed below.
When we supply industrial valves alongside our pipe flanges and fittings, we cross-check each standard so the flange face, bolt pattern, pressure class and material certificate all line up on the same datasheet. Mismatched flange ratings on a single spool are one of the most common headaches we resolve during project kickoff.
A valve can look perfect on a brochure and still fail on the test bench. Our QA team treats inspection as part of the product, not an add-on. The table below shows the tests we routinely run on industrial valve orders.
| Test | Standard | What It Confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Shell (hydrostatic body) | API 598, ISO 5208 | No leakage from body or bonnet at 1.5× rated pressure |
| Seat (sealing) | API 598, API 6D | Disc/ball seals tightly against seat; DBB on double-seated valves |
| Backseat (stem) | API 598 | No leakage past stem packing when valve is fully open |
| Fire test | API 607, API 6FA | Seat integrity after 30 minutes at 760°C, critical for hydrocarbon service |
| Cryogenic test | BS 6364, ISO 28921 | Performance at -196°C for LNG and ethylene service |
| Fugitive emissions | ISO 15848, API 624, TA-Luft | Stem seal tightness for VOC-sensitive applications |
| NDT (PT, MT, UT, RT) | ASME V, ASTM E165/E709/E317 | Absence of surface and subsurface defects on body and welds |
For a recent LNG terminal order, every ball valve passed a helium leak test at 1.1× working pressure before shipment. The leak rate was below 50 ppm, well inside ISO 15848 Class AH. That level of documentation is what lets a client close out a punch list without going back to the vendor.
A valve never works alone. It sits between spools of pipe, a set of flanges, a gasket and a stud bolt. If those components are sourced separately, mismatches show up on site: a Class 300 flange on a Class 600 line, a graphite gasket on a ring-type joint face, a stud bolt one length short of the nut engagement.
When EZ STEEL supplies the industrial valve together with the pipe, fittings, flanges and gaskets, we deliver one set of mill test certificates that cover the whole assembly. The end client signs off once. The EPC contractor gets one delivery. The site crew installs one compatible package. On multi-discipline projects this can shave 4 to 6 weeks off the mechanical completion date.
This is the same logic we applied to the South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Transmission programs. Combining carbon steel pipe with flanges, fittings and valves from one supplier gave the project team a single point of accountability for material traceability, hydrostatic test records and NDT reports.
Use the points below to pressure-test any supplier's offer before you commit.
Tell us the fluid, the pressure class, the operating temperature and the standard your project follows. We will return a matched package of industrial valves, pipe flanges, fittings and gaskets, all covered by one set of mill certificates. From a single 6-inch gate valve for a chemical plant to a 500-unit order for a refinery turnaround, our team can quote, manufacture, test and deliver from a single point of contact.
