Marine Piping Field Guide
A industrial valve on a ship cooling line or a coastal power plant faces an environment that punishes the wrong material within months and forgives the right one for decades. This guide explains how specifiers, shipyards, and procurement teams should think about valve selection when the service fluid is seawater, brine, or a chloride-laden process stream.
Most piping decisions are made against pressure and temperature. Seawater decisions are made against corrosion, biofouling, and galvanic compatibility. A 150# gate valve that runs flawlessly for twenty years on a refinery hydrocarbon line can fail in eighteen months on a ballast line if the body is plain carbon steel and the trim is the wrong stainless grade.
Marine operators have learned this the hard way. The replacement cost of a single corroded valve in an engine room — including drydock time, lost operating days, and the labor of cutting out a flanged joint below the waterline — is typically 8 to 12 times the original purchase price of the valve. Specification discipline at the desk pays for itself long before the first ship leaves port.
Before selecting a valve type, the engineering team must close out the marine service envelope. Five parameters drive nearly every decision:
These five numbers belong on a one-page datasheet before any vendor conversation begins. Without them, every quote you receive is a guess dressed up as a price.
For marine seawater service, three material families cover almost every practical case. Each has a defensible place in a specifier's toolbox.
Copper nickel alloy bodies are the default for shipboard seawater piping, offshore platform cooling, and power plant condenser waterboxes. The 90/10 grade (UNS C70600) handles most ship systems; the 70/30 grade (UNS C71500) is reserved for higher velocities and more aggressive brines. Both alloys resist biofouling naturally, which reduces the maintenance burden of chlorination systems downstream.
For acid, alkali, and sour hydrocarbon exposure, nickel alloys are the upgrade path. Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is the workhorse for hydrofluoric acid alkylation units and seawater-to-hydrocarbon crossover points. Inconel 600 and 825 (UNS N06600, N08825) are selected where temperature climbs above 200 °C or where chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking rules out stainless steel.
For LNG, FPSO topsides, and subsea Christmas trees, super-austenitic 6Mo stainless (UNS N08367, S31254) and 22%Cr duplex (UNS S31803, S32205) bridge the gap between standard 316 stainless and full nickel alloy. They are specified where the project demands both chloride resistance and a high strength-to-weight ratio for offshore structural integration.
Material rule of thumb
If a line carries natural seawater at moderate velocity and stays below 80 °C, the lowest-cost durable answer is 90/10 copper-nickel. If the line carries anything hotter, more acidic, or more aerated, step up the alloy before adding protective coatings — coatings fail, alloy does not.
A valve type is the mechanical answer to a specific duty. In marine service, the wrong geometry creates problems that no amount of alloy selection will fix.
| Operating Duty | Recommended Geometry | Why It Fits Marine Service |
|---|---|---|
| Seawater line isolation (infrequent) | Gate valve (API 600 / API 6D) in Cu-Ni or stainless | Full bore, low pressure drop, ideal for ballast and bilge lines. |
| Engine room cross-over (frequent) | Trunnion ball valve (API 6D) in super-austenitic | Quarter-turn, tight shutoff, compact face-to-face on crowded skids. |
| Cooling water modulation | Globe valve with linear trim | Predictable equal-percentage characteristic for temperature loops. |
| Pump reverse-flow protection | Swing or dual-plate check valve | Passive protection, no actuator power required, suited to unmanned machinery spaces. |
| Large-diameter intake / discharge | Butterfly valve (wafer or lug) in Cu-Ni or aluminum bronze | Lightweight, cost-effective above 24" line size. |
| Critical service isolation | Double-block-and-bleed (DBB) ball or gate | Allows safe maintenance on downstream equipment in hazardous-area machinery spaces. |
A common field mistake is using a ball valve as a throttling device in cooling loops. In partial-open position, the ball edge is exposed to high-velocity seawater and erodes within weeks. If a line needs both isolation and modulation, specify a separate isolation valve and a control valve, not one device asked to do two jobs.
A marine valve is only as good as the joint it sits in. Two adjacent items deserve equal engineering attention: the pipe flanges on either side, and the gasket, stud bolt and nut set that holds the assembly together. In seawater service, mismatches in this trio cause the majority of drydock findings.
For ASME B16.5 flanges, the gasket style, bolt grade, and facing finish must be specified together. A spiral-wound gasket on a Class 150 flat face is a leak waiting to happen; the same gasket on a raised face is correctly clamped. The same principle applies to copper nickel flanges, where the gasket and bolt selection also has to survive galvanic compatibility with the Cu-Ni body — typically by using aluminum-bronze or monel bolting rather than standard B7 carbon steel.
A traceable marine valve data sheet lists the standards the body was designed, tested, and certified against. If any of these references is missing, the document is incomplete and the valve should not be released for service.
| Standard | What It Covers | When It Is Required |
|---|---|---|
| EEMUA 144 / EEMUA 234 | Cu-Ni piping and flanges for marine service | All 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni seawater systems |
| ASTM B466 / B467 | Seamless and welded Cu-Ni pipe | Cu-Ni body and trim material certificates |
| ASTM B163 / B165 / B407 | Nickel alloy tubes (Monel, Inconel) | Nickel alloy body and trim material certificates |
| API 6D | Pipeline valves (gate, ball, check, plug) | Cross-country and gathering pipelines |
| API 600 / API 602 | Bolted-bonnet and small gate / globe valves | Refinery and process plant isolation |
| API 598 | Valve inspection and testing | Every shipped valve, every shipment |
| ASME B16.34 | Pressure-temperature ratings for steel valves | All pressure-containing steel valves |
| ASME B16.10 | Face-to-face dimensions | Whenever valves are swapped in a designed line |
| ISO 15848 / API 624 | Fugitive emissions from stem seals | Refineries, chemical plants, ESG-sensitive sites |
Reputable manufacturers run the test sequence in API 598 as a baseline, then add the optional tests the project demands. The minimum set a specifier should require on every marine valve certificate:
Where a line carries LNG, ammonia, or other cryogenic or hazardous fluids, add cryogenic testing per BS 6364 and fire testing per API 607 or API 6FA. These are not optional in modern shipbuilding practice.
Most marine valve leaks on commissioning are not the valve's fault. They are caused by flange / gasket / bolt combinations that were sourced from three or four different vendors, each holding the other responsible. Bundling the industrial valves, the matching steel flanges or copper-nickel flanges, and the gasket and bolting kit from a single supplier collapses the interface into one technical contact.
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied this kind of pressure-boundary bundle for over three decades — since 1994 — out of a single manufacturing and inventory base in Changsha, China. With eight product lines covering carbon, stainless, copper-nickel, and heat-efficiency tubes alongside fittings, flanges, gaskets, and valves, an annual capacity above 480,000 units, and certifications covering API, EN, ASME, AWS, and ISO 9001, the company can hold the entire marine pressure boundary under one quality file, one MTR trail, and one point of accountability.
Use this list on every marine valve purchase order, regardless of vessel size:
If your next project involves a vessel, an offshore platform, a coastal power plant, or a seawater cooling system, share your line list and service envelope with EZ Steel Industrial. The engineering team will return a coordinated quotation covering the industrial valves, the matching pipe flanges, and the gasket and bolting kit — one quality file, one delivery, one point of accountability.
