A field-tested selection handbook for engineers, EPC procurement teams, and plant operators who need reliable industrial valves for refineries, power plants, desalination trains, and bulk-water lines.
A valve is the only moving component in most process piping — and the only one that is deliberately opened, closed, or throttled thousands of times during its service life. Choose the wrong one, and the line leaks at the first shut-in, the actuator stalls under differential pressure, or the seat washes out within a year. Choose the right one, and the same valve quietly does its job for the next two decades with only routine gland packing.
After thirty-plus years of supplying industrial valves alongside our pipe, fitting, and flange packages to projects like the West-East Gas Pipeline and South-to-North Water Diversion, we have learned that good valve selection is less about memorizing a catalog and more about lining up three decisions: the function the valve has to perform on the line, the body and trim material that can survive the fluid, and the end connection that matches the surrounding piping. This guide walks through those three decisions, then closes with the practical checks that separate a smooth commissioning from a costly rework.
Every valve on a line plays one of four roles, and confusing those roles is the single most expensive mistake a procurement team can make.
Once the function is fixed, the body style, seat material, and actuation method follow logically. A gate valve modulated to 40 % open will hammer and chatter; a globe valve used as a simple isolation block wastes money. Get the function right first, and the rest of the specification practically writes itself.
The table below summarizes the valve types EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL most commonly supplies for industrial service, with the function each one performs best.
| Valve Type | Best For | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Gate | Full-bore isolation in oil & gas, steam, and water lines | Not for throttling; seat erosion if left partially open |
| Globe | Throttling and flow regulation; on-off duty in high-pressure steam | Higher pressure drop; larger installed face-to-face |
| Ball (floating & trunnion) | Quick isolation, low torque, tight shut-off | Cavitation in high ΔP service without soft seats |
| Butterfly (concentric, double, triple offset) | Large-diameter water, HVAC, and low-pressure process lines | Seat material limits temperature; select triple-offset for steam |
| Check (swing, wafer, axial) | Pump discharge, compressor discharge, preventing backflow | Slam on pump trip; consider slow-closing or anti-slam designs |
| Safety / Relief | Over-pressure protection on fired heaters, pressure vessels, and steam drums | Must be capacity-certified and set-pressure verified |
| Diaphragm | Slurries, corrosive chemicals, hygienic service | Limited pressure/temperature envelope; diaphragm replacement interval |
| Plug (lubricated, sleeved) | Severe service: abrasive slurry, pulp, mining | Lubricant injection on lubricated types; sleeve wear on sleeved types |
Practical tip: For a long, level, large-diameter water line, a rubber-seated butterfly valve costs roughly one-third of an equivalent gate valve and weighs about the same. For a refinery hydrocracker block valve, the trunnion-mounted ball with double block & bleed is the only choice that meets API 6D.
Material is where most valve problems start, and where the largest savings live. The wrong body either corrodes through, scales up, or fails under a temperature swing. Three families cover the majority of industrial applications.
ASTM A216 WCB, A352 LCC, and A217 WC6/WC9 are the workhorses for hydrocarbon, steam, and water service at temperatures up to about 425 °C for WCB. They are weldable, machinable, and stocked in nearly every size from ½″ to 48″. For low-temperature service (down to –46 °C), A352 LCC with impact-tested bodies is the standard choice. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies carbon steel gate, globe, check, and ball valves in matched materials so they can be welded directly into a carbon steel pipe line without galvanic risk.
A351 CF8/CF8M (304/316) covers most chemical, food, and pharmaceutical service. For chloride-bearing process streams, offshore cooling, and produced water, duplex (F51, F53) and super-duplex (F55) deliver roughly twice the allowable chloride exposure of 316L at a unit cost not much higher. Stainless valve bodies pair naturally with our stainless steel pipe range for skid modules where mixed materials would create galvanic cells.
For seawater cooling, firewater mains, and shipboard systems, 90/10 (UNS C70600) and 70/30 (UNS C71500) copper-nickel bodies have been the industry default for more than fifty years. They resist biofouling, tolerate moderate velocities, and remain stable in brackish water. For aggressive chemicals, high-temperature refining, and aerospace service, Monel 400, Inconel 625, and other nickel alloys are available on mill order alongside our copper nickel alloy tube and flange packages.
The end connection determines how the valve joins the line, how it is installed, and how it is later removed for maintenance. Mixing end connections across a single spool is a frequent source of field rework.
Practical tip: A flanged valve costs more at the BOM but saves a half-day of welding and NDT for every future overhaul. For any valve larger than 6″ or rated above Class 600, the flanged option almost always wins on installed cost.
A valve is a system, not a stand-alone component. Three supporting items decide whether the joint performs for the next twenty years or fails within the first quarter.
Stud bolts and nuts. The bolt grade must match the flange class and the operating temperature. For Class 600 and above, or for temperatures above 200 °C, B7/B7M is replaced by B16 or B8 class stud bolts with graphite lubrication. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL bundles matched gasket stud bolt nut kits with every valve so the entire joint is traceable and arrives together.
Gaskets. Spiral-wound graphite for raised-face Class 300 and above, ring-joint metal for Class 600 and above, compressed non-asbestos for low-pressure water and air, PTFE for chemical service. The gasket must be specified in the same RFQ as the valve — never as a separate afterthought.
Actuation. Manual handwheel or gear operator for occasional duty; pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuator for modulating service, frequent operation, or remote control. The actuator sizing must account for the valve's maximum breakaway torque at the design differential pressure, not just the seating torque at zero ΔP.
There is a real difference between buying a valve from a mill-direct package and assembling it from three trading companies. When the valve, pipe, fittings, flanges, and gaskets all come from one coordinated supplier, the face-to-face dimensions line up, the materials match, the pressure classes match, and the MTR file covers the entire spool. When they are sourced separately, you spend commissioning week chasing that one mismatched stub.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been a mill-direct producer since 1994, with 500+ technical staff, an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, and a fully accredited ISO 9001 laboratory. Our valve packages are produced under API, EN, and ASME certifications for EPC contractors, shipyards, petrochemical plants, and power-generation projects — including the South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline.
Send us your line class, fluid, operating temperature, and quantity — we will return a datasheet, a recommended valve schedule, and a quotation within one business day. From a single industrial valve to a complete piping package including pipes, fittings, and flanges, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL delivers mill-direct quality with project-level coordination.
