If you buy jis g3461 steel tube for subcritical boilers, heat exchangers, or condenser service, the JIS G 3461:2019 specification is probably already on your datasheet. What the standard does not tell you is how to verify that the mill you are sourcing from actually delivers the chemistry, heat treatment, and dimensional tolerance your EPC project requires. This guide walks procurement, QA, and engineering teams through the three grades covered by JIS G 3461 — STB340, STB410, and STB510 — and shows how a mill-direct carbon & carbon alloy steel program with bundled pipe fittings, hydrostatic test reporting, and ISO 9001 documentation closes the typical risk gaps in carbon steel boiler tubing procurement.
JIS G 3461 is the Japanese Industrial Standard for "Carbon Steel Tubes for Boiler and Heat Exchanger." The 2019 revision is the current edition and aligns dimensional and testing requirements with ISO 9329-1. The standard covers three strength levels — STB340, STB410, and STB510 — and four product routes: seamless hot-finished, seamless cold-finished, electric-resistance-welded (ERW) as-welded, and ERW cold-finished. All routes are acceptable for boiler tubing, but the choice has a direct impact on pressure rating, scale resistance, and downstream welding.
JIS G 3461 is most commonly used for low-to-medium pressure boiler components — economizer tubes, water-wall panels, superheater tubing in subcritical units, and the tube side of shell-and-tube heat exchanger tube and condenser tube bundles. It is not a high-temperature creep standard. Once the metal temperature crosses approximately 450 °C in continuous service, the procurement team should switch to a chromium-molybdenum alloy such as 15CrMoG (per GB/T 5310) or ASME SA-213 T11 / T22, not because JIS G 3461 is "wrong" but because carbon steel simply loses creep strength at that envelope.
JIS G 3461 defines STB340, STB410, and STB510 by minimum tensile strength. The same carbon-manganese chemistry is used, but carbon and manganese are pushed up to reach the higher tensile classes. The table below summarizes the typical mechanical envelope; full JIS G 3461 chemistry limits and acceptance criteria are confirmed by mill test certificate per heat.
| Grade | Min. Tensile (MPa) | Min. Yield (MPa) | Min. Elongation | Typical End Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STB340 | 340 | 175 | ≥ 30 % (OD ≥ 20 mm) | Economizer, low-pressure water wall, glycol/water heat exchangers |
| STB410 | 410 | 255 | ≥ 30 % (OD ≥ 20 mm) | Superheater (subcritical), condensate return, process piping |
| STB510 | 510 | 295 | ≥ 25 % | Steam distribution headers, high-pressure process pipe |
STB340 is the most common export grade because the chemistry (C ≤ 0.18 %, Mn 0.30–0.60 %) is easy to weld and offers good formability for U-bent heat exchanger tube coils. STB410 and STB510 step up strength but require more attention to preheat and PWHT. If the procurement document calls for "JIS G 3461" without specifying a grade, always pin the grade down on the PO — mill-direct manufacturers such as EZ Steel will not assume the wrong one for your service.
JIS G 3461 uses a two-letter marking system: the first letter is the manufacturing method (S for seamless, E for ERW) and the second is the forming/finishing method (H for hot, C for cold, G for as-welded). The full designation is written as the grade plus the two-letter suffix.
Procurement tip: If the service is post-bend (U-tube, J-tube) or requires significant cold forming, request cold-finished product and confirm the mill heat-treats in the final cold-worked condition. JIS G 3461 requires a low-temperature anneal, normalize, or full anneal after cold working for STB340 and STB410 — never accept as-drawn for pressure service.
JIS G 3461 tubes are routinely substituted for ASTM/ASME, EN, and GB/T grades. The substitution is not always one-to-one; chemistry, heat treatment, and testing differ. A mill-direct supplier should be able to support dual or multi-standard certification per heat, which is the safest path when the EPC specification is written to a different standard than the mill's primary license.
| JIS G 3461 | ASME / ASTM | EN | GB/T | Typical Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STB340 | SA-178A, SA-210A1 | P195GH | 20G (low-temp sections) | Economizer, water wall |
| STB410 | SA-210C, SA-106B | P235GH | 20G | Superheater (subcritical), condensate |
| STB510 | SA-106C | P265GH | 25MnG | Steam distribution, headers |
Where the specification requires higher alloy content for higher temperature or pressure — for example, when a project calls for 15CrMoG, 12Cr1MoVG, or 10Cr9Mo1VNbN (T91) — the procurement team should switch to GB/T 5310 or ASME SA-213 / SA-335 rather than stay on JIS G 3461. The mill-direct supplier at carbon & carbon alloy steel should be able to deliver both standards from the same Yangzhou facility, with bundled pipe fittings, steel flanges, and gaskets as a single project package.
JIS G 3461 sets the floor; most project specifications raise it. Before releasing a purchase order, the procurement team should agree with the supplier on the following test and document deliverables, and these should be written into the PO rather than left to "per standard."
Most procurement problems with JIS G 3461 tubes come from a trading layer, not the standard itself. A mill-direct manufacturer can do three things a stockist or trading house cannot: control heat treatment, hold chemistry inside the narrowest band, and document traceability at the heat number level. For project work — boiler rebuilds, condenser retubing, petrochemical carbon & carbon alloy steel packages — this is the difference between passing a hydrostatic test on the first try and chasing a 5 % leak rate into the field.
When evaluating suppliers, ask the following questions up front:
After two decades of supplying JIS G 3461 tubes to boiler makers, EPC contractors, and heat exchanger fabricators, we see the same procurement mistakes repeat. Avoid these and your project stays on schedule.
JIS G 3461 is rarely the only standard on a boiler project. Most subcritical and supercritical units also need:
A mill-direct program that delivers JIS G 3461 tubes together with the alloy, stainless, fitting, flange, and gasket components removes the multi-vendor MTC reconciliation that delays most cross-standard boiler retrofits.
EZ Steel Industrial is a mill-direct manufacturer of JIS G 3461 STB340, STB410, and STB510 tubes, plus the GB/T 5310, ASME SA-213, SA-335, and EN 10216-2 alloy tubes that typically sit alongside them in a boiler or heat exchanger. We deliver heat-traceable MTCs, 100 % hydrostatic and ET testing, and bundled pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, and industrial valves as a single project package.
Send your datasheet, grade, OD × wall × length, quantity, and any third-party inspection requirement. We will return a mill-direct quotation within one business day.
