JIS G3444 CS structure pipe is the most widely specified carbon steel tube for towers, scaffolding, building frames, container structures, bridge guardrails, transmission poles, and foundation piles across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. It is also the standard most international EPC buyers get wrong ??treated as a "low-pressure" linepipe where it does not belong, or over-specified as a pressure tube when the service is purely structural. This guide covers what JIS G3444 actually allows, the four STK grades, cross-standard equivalents, the ERW-vs-seamless split by size, the order specification sequence, QA/QC and MTC documents, and how to source the tube as part of a complete piping and structural package from one mill rather than four trading companies.
JIS G3444 ??"Carbon steel tubes for general structural purposes" ??covers welded and seamless carbon steel tubes used in general civil and architectural structure works: towers, building frames, bridge guardrails, scaffolds, container chassis, transmission and lighting poles, dock fenders, agricultural greenhouses, conveyor frames, and foundation piles for non-pressure service. It is the Japanese counterpart of ASTM A500 for cold-formed HSS, ASTM A252 for steel pipe piles, and EN 10210 / EN 10219 for hot-finished and cold-formed structural hollow sections.
The standard explicitly excludes pressure service, high-temperature service, and boiler / heat-exchanger service. JIS G3444 STK 400 in place of ASTM A53 / A106 linepipe, or in place of ASTM A178 / A192 boiler tubes for economizer coils, is a wrong choice that leads to in-service failure or inspection rejection. If the line carries pressure, the tube must comply with ASTM A53, ASTM A106, API 5L, EN 10255, JIS G3452, or JIS G3454 ??not JIS G3444.
Scope in one sentence: Use JIS G3444 STK 400 / 490 / 500 / 540 for structures that hold weight, transfer load, or frame an enclosure. Do not use it for any line carrying internal pressure, any surface above 350 ?C, or any boiler / heat-exchanger / condenser duty.
JIS G3444 defines four grade families. Grade name follows "STK" (Steel Tube for K?z?, i.e., structure) plus the minimum tensile strength in MPa.
| Grade | Min Yield (MPa) | Tensile (MPa) | Elongation min (%) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STK 400 | 235 | 400 ??510 | 23 / 25 | Scaffolding, light fence posts, low-rise frame secondary members. |
| STK 490 | 315 | 490 ??610 | 23 / 25 | Building columns, transmission / lighting poles, conveyor frames. |
| STK 500 | 355 | 500 ??620 | 15 / 19 | Bridge guardrails, container chassis, dock fenders, light structural piles. |
| STK 540 | 390 | 540 ??660 | 13 / 17 | Heavy structural members, large-span trusses, high-load columns. |
As the grade rises, yield rises but elongation drops. STK 400 and STK 490 are easy to roll-form, swage, swage-expand, and bend. STK 500 and STK 540 ??closer in chemistry to ASTM A572 Grade 50 ??need more careful forming and welding; request CVN impact data for sub-zero service (JIS G3444 does not require Charpy, but a well-run mill can provide 27 J at 0 ?C on request).
Rule of thumb: pick the lowest STK grade that meets the calculated design stress. STK 400 covers 70 % of all scaffold, fence, and light-frame applications. STK 490 is justified only when load, span, or column slenderness demands it. STK 500 and STK 540 are specialty grades.
"Can I get the same performance out of an ASTM, EN, or GB/T grade?" ??yes for most applications, but the equivalence is not perfect. The table below maps the four STK grades to their closest ASTM, EN, and GB/T equivalents.
| JIS G3444 | ASTM (US) | EN (Europe) | GB/T (China) |
|---|---|---|---|
| STK 400 | A500 Gr B round / A53 Gr A Type E,F | EN 10210 / 10219 S235JRH | GB/T 3091 steel pipe Q235 / GB/T 6728 Q235 |
| STK 490 | A500 Gr C / A572 Gr 50 | EN 10210 / 10219 S275J2H | GB/T 6728 Q275 / GB/T 8162 Q275 |
| STK 500 | A500 Gr C / A252 Gr 2 (piling) | EN 10210 / 10219 S355J2H | GB/T 6728 Q345 / GB/T 8162 Q345 |
| STK 540 | A252 steel tubular piles Gr 3 / A572 Gr 50 | EN 10210 S420MH | GB/T 8162 Q390 |
The closest seamless tubular-pile equivalent on the ASTM side is the A252 steel tubular piles family, and on the EN side the hot-finished EN 10210 steel hollow sections family. For cold-formed, lighter scaffold, fence, and sign-post applications, ASTM A500 Grade A/B and EN 10219 S235 / S275 are the direct equivalents. A buyer who needs a single shipment to satisfy both JIS G3444 STK 400 and ASTM A500 Grade B can source a dual-certified heat stamped with both grade marks.
Unlike pressure-tube standards, JIS G3444 does not lock the buyer into a single form. The same grade can be supplied as welded (ERW) or seamless; the practical decision is driven by OD, wall thickness, and the structural specification.
Practical note on welding: the longitudinal weld in JIS G3444 ERW is required by the standard to be the same strength as the base metal after normalizing. In pure structural service, do not derate an ERW JIS G3444 STK 400 member compared to a seamless one. Decide on cost, OD, and lead time, not on perceived weld integrity.
The JIS G3444 size envelope: OD 21.7 ??1016.0 mm, wall 2.0 ??22.0 mm. Random length is 4 ??12 m; cut-to-length is available on request. The most common RFQ errors are OD written as NPS instead of mm, wall written as schedule without a wall number, and length not specified.
| Parameter | JIS G3444 tolerance | What the buyer should write |
|---|---|---|
| Outside diameter | ?1 % of OD, min ?0.5 mm | "OD 114.3 mm ?1 %" |
| Wall ??seamless | ??2.5 %; mill practice ?10 % | "WT 6.0 mm, no negative tolerance beyond ??0 %" |
| Wall ??welded | ?10 % | Welded tubes have symmetric tolerance |
| Length | +50 / 0 mm (single random); cut length is contractual | Exact length if downstream processing is automated |
| Straightness | ??0.2 % of length (OD ??50 mm); tighter on request | State if tube will be auto-fed into a bending or welding line |
| End finish | Plain end or bevelled per JIS Z 3111 / AWS | "BE 30? with 1.6 mm land" for site-welded structures |
For OD ??60.5 mm, the mill is most often running ERW on a continuous line; tight length tolerance (?2 mm) is practical. For OD > 355.6 mm, the tube is hot-finished or cold-formed from plate; length tolerance widens to ?25 mm, and confirm whether your requirement is a single-piece delivery or multiple pieces welded end-to-end at the mill.
STK 400 has a typical Ceq of 0.30 ??0.36, in the "easy to weld" range. STK 490 is 0.32 ??0.40 and remains readily weldable with low-hydrogen electrodes. STK 500 and STK 540 push Ceq toward 0.40 ??0.46, where preheat (50 ??100 ?C), low-hydrogen consumables (E7018 or equivalent), and interpass temperature control become important ??especially in thick wall (??12 mm) or low ambient temperature (< 5 ?C) conditions. For field welding to ASTM A36 plate or EN 10025 S235 / S275 beams, use E7018 for STK 400 / 490 and E7018-G or E8018-G for STK 500 / 540. PWHT is not required for STK 400 / 490 in typical structural thicknesses, but for STK 500 / 540 in thick wall or in code-stamped structures (AISC, EN 1090, JIS B 8285) the project specification may still call for PWHT at 595 ??620 ?C.
A well-run JIS G3444 mill operates under ISO 9001 and routinely provides EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates per heat. Buyers who want third-party witnessed MTC should ask for EN 10204 3.2. The minimum documentation we recommend attaching to every RFQ and PO:
For a project that also touches pressure piping, structural steel, and process equipment, the same mill can deliver JIS G3444 tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves as one package, with one combined MTC schedule.
The single most common mistake on RFQs is the order in which the specification is written. JIS G3444 allows a lot of flexibility ??but only if the specification follows the correct sequence. The order below matches the one the mill uses internally to plan production; matching it on the PO removes 90 % of the back-and-forth.
A PO that follows this sequence is processed in 2?? days at the mill. A PO that arrives with only "JIS G3444 tube 100 t" gets 2?? weeks of clarification emails before production can start.
For first-time buyers, we strongly recommend a pre-shipment inspection at the mill. The cost is small relative to the value of the shipment, and it catches the issues that are easy to miss from a desk.
JIS G3444 is the default structural tube standard in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and a growing share of Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and African projects. The most common end uses:
For piling where the member is also exposed to seawater splash or aggressive soil, the A252 steel tubular piles family (Grade 1, 2, 3) is often used as the direct ASTM counterpart. We routinely supply dual-certified A252 / JIS G3444 STK 490 tubes for marine piling projects in Southeast Asia, where the engineer of record needs both the US and JIS reference on the MTC.
JIS G3444 is widely traded ??every large Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese steel distributor stocks it. The price spread between mill-direct and trading-company supply is typically 8 ??18 % for ERW tubes in standard sizes, and 15 ??30 % for seamless in non-standard sizes. The spread reflects the trading company's cost of capital, warehousing, and the additional handling that lengthens the MTC chain.
The mill-direct model has three structural advantages. First, the MTC comes from the actual producer ??no chain of custody, no risk of MTC from a different heat than the tubes in the container. Second, the mill can confirm grade availability, OD / wall feasibility, and lead time at the inquiry stage. Third, the mill can integrate the JIS G3444 tube order with the project's other needs ??pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves ??into one consolidated shipment, one MTC schedule, one delivery window. If the supplier cannot name the producing mill in their quotation, and the MTC does not show the same mill name and address as the supplier, the MTC chain is broken ??always ask for the producing mill name and confirm it matches the MTC.
Not exactly. STK 400 has a minimum yield of 235 MPa; ASTM A500 Grade B round HSS has a minimum yield of 290 MPa. For scaffold and light-frame applications the two are often interchangeable, but for any design that depends on the 290 MPa yield, a true A500 Grade B must be specified.
No. For sub-zero service or dynamic-load structures, request CVN at 0 ?C or ??0 ?C as a supplementary requirement. The mill can usually accommodate 27 J at 0 ?C on request.
