EZ Steel Industrial · Copper & Nickel Alloy Sourcing 2026
A practical procurement playbook for EPC engineers, refinery buyers and shipyard specifiers sourcing Monel 400 tube from a mill-direct Chinese manufacturer with bundled piping components.
When a piping system has to survive hydrofluoric acid alkylation units, hot concentrated caustic, sour seawater, or anhydrous ammonia above 500 °C, ordinary stainless steel is not the answer. Monel 400 tube — a single-phase nickel-copper solid solution with roughly 65% Ni and 32% Cu plus 1% Fe and a trace of carbon — is one of the few alloys that keeps working where everything else fails.
The reason engineers keep specifying it is simple: Monel 400 combines the corrosion resistance of pure nickel in reducing media with the corrosion resistance of pure copper in oxidising media, and it does not suffer from chloride stress corrosion cracking. It welds cleanly with the matching ENiCu-7 / ERNiCu-7 filler metals, holds a tensile strength above 450 MPa in the annealed condition, and stays ductile down to sub-zero service temperatures. As a copper nickel alloy family member, it sits alongside 90-10 (C70600) and 70-30 (C71500) tubes that EZ Steel Industrial stocks for marine and power-plant work, but Monel 400 is the workhorse when the chemistry is the design driver.
Quick read
If you only have 60 seconds, jump to Section 4 (standards cheat sheet) and Section 8 (procurement checklist) before you send your next inquiry to any mill.
Monel 400 is not a heat-treatable alloy; its strength comes from solid-solution hardening of the nickel-copper matrix, not from precipitation. That single-phase microstructure is exactly why it does not suffer from grain-boundary attack in many of the media that destroy duplex or austenitic stainless grades.
| Element | Nominal content | Role in the alloy |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | ~ 65% | Provides resistance to caustic, HF and reducing acids; stabilises the austenitic matrix |
| Copper (Cu) | ~ 32% | Improves resistance to seawater, sulphuric acid and non-oxidising acids |
| Iron (Fe) | ~ 1% | Improves resistance to pitting and helps the alloy resist corrosion under deposits |
| Carbon (C) | ~ 0.1% max | Kept low to avoid graphitisation at high temperatures |
| Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si) | Trace | Deoxidation and weldability control |
The key procurement takeaway is that Monel 400 tube is essentially the same chemistry whether you order to ASTM B165, ASME SB-165, EN 2.4360 or JIS NW4400, and dual-certifying against two of these standards is the norm on most refinery and shipyard RFQs.
The mechanical envelope of Monel 400 tube is wide enough to cover both cold-drawn instrument tubing and hot-finished condenser tubing. The table below summarises the most commonly referenced values.
| Property | Annealed tube (typical) | Cold-drawn / hard tube (typical) | Design implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 480 – 550 MPa | 650 – 760 MPa | Hard tube tolerates higher pressure in instrument lines |
| Yield strength (0.2%) | 170 – 240 MPa | 480 – 620 MPa | Drives allowable stress in pressure-vessel calculations |
| Elongation | 35 – 50% | 10 – 20% | Annealed tube is easy to flare and bend on site |
| Hardness (HRB) | 65 – 85 | 95 – 110 | Hard tube wears better in vibrating service |
| Modulus of elasticity | ~ 180 GPa at 20 °C | Used for spring-rate and U-bend expansion calculations | |
In heat-exchanger and condenser service, the most common supply condition is annealed, because the tube has to be rolled into the tubesheet and bent into a U without cracking. As a heat exchanger tubes producer, EZ Steel Industrial delivers Monel 400 in both straight lengths and U-bent configurations to the same heat for matched thermal expansion.
Most international RFQs reference at least one of the standards below. The good news is that all of them describe the same nickel-copper chemistry, so dual-certification is a paperwork exercise rather than a re-melt.
| Standard | Form | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM B127 / ASME SB-127 | Plate, sheet, strip | Flat product for vessels and linings |
| ASTM B164 / ASME SB-164 | Rod, bar, wire | Forged fittings, valve trim, pump shafts |
| ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 | Seamless pipe & tube | The default spec for Monel 400 pressure tubing |
| ASTM B725 | Welded pipe & tube | For larger diameters where welded construction is acceptable |
| EN 2.4360 / DIN 17750 | Plate, sheet, tube | European designation for the same alloy |
| JIS NW4400 | Plate, tube, bar | Japanese / Korean shipyard projects |
| UNS N04400 | Unified Numbering System | The cross-border reference everyone accepts |
Specifying dual compliance (for example ASTM B165 + EN 2.4360) is the safest way to keep your project portable between regional engineering teams. EZ Steel Industrial routinely dual-certifies seamless Monel 400 tube to ASTM B165 and the equivalent EN or JIS designation on the same heat.
Corrosion performance is the single biggest reason a buyer pays the premium for Monel 400. The three service areas below are where the alloy pays for itself within one or two inspection cycles.
Monel 400 is one of the few alloys that resist hydrofluoric acid across a wide concentration range, which is why it is the default material for HF alkylation units in refineries and for fluorine-bearing chemical reactors. Stainless steel fails almost immediately in these streams; carbon steel scales and plugs.
The high nickel content gives Monel 400 tube excellent resistance to hot concentrated caustic up to roughly 60% NaOH, and to anhydrous ammonia below 585 °C. It is widely used in chlor-alkali evaporators, soap and detergent plants, and ammonia refrigeration headers.
In flowing seawater, Monel 400 tube shows a corrosion rate below 0.025 mm/year and resists pitting, crevice attack and chloride stress corrosion cracking — issues that plague 300-series stainless. The alloy is widely used in shipboard heat exchangers, desalination brine heaters and offshore platform chemical-injection skids, where it can be paired with copper nickel flanges for the connecting piping.
Monel 400 is produced in two principal forms, and the choice drives cost, lead time and applicable service.
Manufactured by hot-extruding or cold-drawing a solid billet through a piercing mill, seamless Monel 400 tube has no weld seam and uniform mechanical properties around the circumference. Hot-finished seamless covers OD 6 mm to 325 mm with wall thickness from 1 mm to 30 mm, and is the default for high-pressure refinery and chemical process lines. Cold-drawn seamless offers tighter OD and wall tolerances, smooth surface finish and higher strength for instrument and heat-exchanger service.
Formed from strip or sheet and welded with an autogenous TIG or laser process followed by solution annealing, welded Monel 400 tube is used for larger diameters and lower-pressure service where cost matters. With 100% weld radiographic or ultrasonic testing plus a final solution anneal, welded tube today reaches performance very close to seamless for many applications.
| Route | Typical OD range | Best-fit applications |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless (ASTM B165) | 6 – 325 mm | HF alkylation, caustic evaporators, ammonia headers, instrument lines |
| Welded (ASTM B725) | 10 – 600 mm | Seawater cooling, chemical injection, low-pressure process pipe |
| Cold-drawn seamless | 1.6 – 50 mm | Condenser and heat-exchanger tubes, capillary and instrument tubing |
Across thirty years of mill-direct supply, EZ Steel Industrial has delivered Monel 400 tube into the following typical services — and most of them are still running without replacement.
In most of these services the Monel 400 tube is the highest-cost line item on the BOM, but it is also the line item that determines whether the plant runs continuously for the next inspection cycle. That is why buyers tend to specify the mill carefully rather than chasing the lowest unit price.
After three decades in the business, EZ Steel Industrial has seen the same five mistakes drive up cost and delay Monel 400 projects:
