Every refinery, ethylene cracker and aromatics complex is a city of pipes. The petrochemical facilities that produce gasoline, jet fuel, olefins and intermediates rely on thousands of metres of seamless tube to move hydrocarbons, sour water, steam, amine, acid gas and cooling water between reactors, columns, exchangers and storage tanks. The wrong tube in the wrong service means unplanned shutdowns, accelerated corrosion, and HSE exposure.
This guide walks B2B procurement teams, project engineers and EPC subcontractors through the materials, standards and sourcing decisions that matter most when buying tube and pipe for petrochemical facilities. We use a mill-direct perspective drawn from EZ Steel Industrial's copper & nickel alloy, stainless steel and carbon alloy steel portfolios, and we keep every recommendation grounded in named ASTM, EN, GB/T and EEMUA specifications.
A refinery is not a power plant, and it is not an offshore platform. It sits between the two. The process envelope includes:
These services are why a single petrochemical facilities project can pull tube from three different material families: copper & nickel alloy for seawater-cooled overheads and condensers, austenitic/duplex stainless steel for hydroprocessing, and carbon or low-alloy steel for hydrocracker and reformer piping.
Rather than starting with standards, start with the corrosion and temperature envelope. Below is the working classification used by most owner-operator specifications.
| Material Family | Typical UNS / Grade | Common Service | Limiting Factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon & carbon alloy steel | A106 Gr.B, A335 P11/P22/P91, API 5L X65 | Reactor feed, steam, hydrocracker, linepipe | Sulfidation above ~370 °C; NAC above ~230 °C in T > 0.5 service |
| Austenitic stainless | TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321, TP347 | Hydroprocessing, hydrotreater, reformer, hot reformer effluent | Cl SCC above 60 °C in oxygenated water; σ-phase in 321/347 if stabilised incorrectly |
| Duplex / super-duplex | S31803, S32750, S32760 | Seawater cooler shells, offshore inter-platform piping | 475 °C embrittlement; not for sustained > 300 °C |
| Copper-nickel | C70600 (90-10), C71500 (70-30) | Seawater-cooled overhead condensers, firewater, desalination | Velocity limits 2.5–3.5 m/s; not for ammonia or H2S-rich streams |
| Nickel & nickel alloy | N02200, N04400, N06600, N08825 | HF alkylation, hot HF, sour service, marine exhaust | Cost; stress relaxation above 500 °C for N02200 |
Each row maps to a different tube product line in EZ Steel Industrial's catalogue. Procurement teams that lock material choice too early end up buying the wrong structure works, pipeline works, or pressure tubes standard.
The workhorse of crude-unit overhead condensing and vacuum-column cold-end service is the B466 copper nickel tube, supplied as UNS C70600 (90-10) or UNS C71500 (70-30). It is the dominant tube in petrochemic facilities where seawater is on the shell side and hydrocarbon vapour is on the tube side.
UNS C70600 (90-10 Cu-Ni, 1.0–1.8 % Fe, 1.0 % Mn max): the standard for seawater-cooled overhead condensers and auxiliary coolers. It resists biofouling, tolerates moderate velocities, and handles the chloride levels found in once-through and open-recirculating cooling systems.
UNS C71500 (70-30 Cu-Ni, 0.4–1.0 % Fe, 1.0 % Mn max): the upgrade choice when velocity is higher, the water is more polluted, or the design life extends beyond 25 years. Higher nickel content improves erosion-corrosion resistance and is preferred for refinery cooling loops near the marine terminal.
ASTM B466/B466M covers the seamless product in nominal pipe sizes, with chemical composition tightly controlled (Cu ≥ 88.6 % for C70600, Cu ≥ 65.0 % for C71500) and mechanical properties verified in the annealed or as-drawn temper. For condenser and ferrule geometries, B111 copper alloy tube is the parallel specification covering seamless copper and copper-alloy tubes including aluminium brass C68700, admiralty C44300, and copper-nickel C70600/C71500/C71640.
Procurement tip: always order B466/B466M tubes with the full ordering information spelled out — ASTM designation, UNS number, temper, OD × wall × length, quantity, end finish, and test report requirements. Missing any one of these creates room for the mill to ship a different surface condition, temper, or certification level than the project actually needs.
Three nickel specifications dominate the petrochemical envelope:
HF alkylation units are the classic application for Monel 400 piping. B165 Monel 400 is the seamless pipe equivalent for the same service. Incoloy 825 (N08825) is the go-to material for hot concentrated sulphuric acid and for sour hydrocarbon service where chloride-SCC would attack standard austenitic grades.
The bulk of the tonnage on a refinery project is not exotic — it is austenitic stainless for the hydroprocessing block, and low-alloy steel for the steam network and hydrocracker.
Two specifications do most of the work. ASTM A213/A213M covers seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes, including the 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb grades (T91, T92) used in modern power and process plant headers. ASTM A249/A249M covers welded austenitic tubes for lower-pressure boiler and condenser service where the wall is light enough to be formed and welded rather than extruded. Both ship in solution-annealed condition with ASME B36.19M sizes and full MTC.
Above the 9Cr envelope sit the 12Cr and austenitic grades (TP304H, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H) used in ethylene furnace and reformer outlet pigtails. These materials live in creep range and require a controlled heat-treatment cycle, a verified grain size, and a full NDT package (UT, ET, hydrostatic). Sourcing them from a mill that can prove creep data — not just chemistry — is the difference between a tube that runs 100,000 hours and one that creeps out of round at 60,000.
Outside the process island, three tube families do the supporting work:
For tank-farm and jetty-side marine & ship-building applications, EEMUA 144 and EEMUA 234 set the standard for 90-10 and 70-30 Cu-Ni piping — these are the specifications that align refinery and offshore requirements.
When a refinery EPC releases a tube RFQ, the same standards keep appearing. Pre-aligning your sourcing document with this list removes weeks of technical clarification.
Consider a 120,000 bbl/day crude unit planning a five-year maintenance turnaround. The scope is the atmospheric and vacuum overhead condenser bundle. The original 1980s bundle used aluminium brass C68700 tubes, which is still a valid choice for fresh water service but has been failing on the salt-water-cooled unit due to velocity excursions and biofouling pitting.
Three replacement options, three different cost/service profiles:
A mill-direct supplier that can ship B466/B466M tube in C70600 with full EN 10204 3.1 certification, hydrostatic test, and eddy-current NDT in 6–8 weeks is the procurement partner that actually closes the turnaround. Distributors that drop-ship from third-country warehouses cannot match that window.
Petrochemical tube orders are rarely small. A single hydrocracker heater can take 8,000 m of 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb tubes, and a refinery turnaround can release 200+ tonnes of Cu-Ni condenser tube in one PO. The difference between mill-direct and stockist sourcing is most visible in three places:
For custom and one-off demands such as custom copper-nickel alloy tubes sized for a non-standard tube sheet, the mill is the only realistic source.
Before releasing any tube RFQ, project engineers should be able to answer:
When those five answers are clear, the mill can quote accurately and the buyer can compare offers apples to apples. Pair the tube RFQ with a matching set of steel flanges and bolting from the same mill, and the full piping component package can ship on a single MTC chain.
UNS C70600 (90-10 Cu-Ni) supplied to ASTM B466/B466M is the default. UNS C71500 (70-30) is the upgrade choice for higher velocity, more polluted water, or extended design life.
ASTM B111/B111M covers C68700 in both inch-pound and metric units, in annealed or light-drawn tempers, with hydrostatic test as standard and NDT by agreement.
Use nickel alloy (B163, B165, B619) when the service includes hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated sulphuric acid, severe sour service beyond NACE MR0175 limits for stainless, or when chloride-SCC and SCC thresholds in the operating envelope rule out standard austenitic grades.
Yes, in the right place. A249/A249M welded austenitic tubes are widely used in low- to medium-pressure condensers and heat exchangers. For higher-pressure and higher-temperature services (hydroprocessing, steam, hot reactor effluent), specify seamless A213/A213M or A335/A335M.
A213/A213M is seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tube. A249/A249M is welded austenitic boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and condenser tube. A213 is the workhorse for high-pressure and high-temperature service; A249 is the cost-effective choice for lighter-duty condensers.
The reason petrochemical facilities tube procurement is a discipline in its own right is that the process envelope crosses five material families and seven core specifications. The buyer who starts with the service envelope (temperature, pressure, fluid, chloride, H2S) and works back to a UNS number and a standard will end up with a tube that lasts the full design life. The buyer who starts with a brand name and a price will end up with a turnarounds every three years.
EZ Steel Industrial supports mill-direct procurement across the full petrochemical envelope — carbon and carbon alloy steel pressure tubes and pipeline works, austenitic and duplex stainless pressure and pipeline tube, copper-nickel and nickel alloy tube for the seawater, HF and hot-corrosion services that sit alongside power plants & aerospace and marine & ship-building applications. Send your RFQ with the five answers above and a mill-direct quote typically follows within five working days.
