Most piping problems don't start in the pipe. They start at the joint. A wrong elbow radius, a carbon-steel tee in a chloride service, or a socket-weld fitting on a high-cycle vibration line can take a plant down. This guide is built around the questions we hear from buyers every week: which connection type, which material, which standard, and which mill-direct supplier actually delivers what the MTC says.
If you're specifying pipe fittings for a new build or a maintenance shutdown, the next ten minutes will save you the rework of a wrong order.
Before you worry about grade, schedule or radius, lock down the connection type. It dictates wall thickness, dimensional tolerances, pressure rating and field labor. The three families that cover roughly 95% of B2B orders are:
Quick rule of thumb: BW for ≥ 2" NPS or any high-pressure/high-temperature service; SW for ≤ 2" NPS high-pressure non-corrosive; threaded for ≤ 4" NPS low-pressure non-critical. Choosing wrong is the single biggest source of field rework.
A fitting must be made from a material that is at least as corrosion- and temperature-resistant as the pipe it joins. Mismatches cause galvanic corrosion at the joint even when the rest of the line is fine. The four material families you need to keep straight are:
Most refinery, power plant, and high-pressure steam lines run on carbon & carbon alloy steel fittings. ASTM A234 WPB and WPC cover butt-weld carbon steel; ASTM A420 WPL6 and WPL8 are mandatory for low-temperature carbon service (e.g., LNG, ammonia, ethylene) where notch toughness matters. For higher temperatures (480–650 °C) you step up to alloy grades such as A234 WP11, WP22 and WP91, which match the A335 P11/P22/P91 pipe grades used in boiler walls, superheaters and reheater lines.
stainless steel fittings are specified to ASTM A403. The most common grades are WP304/304L and WP316/316L, with 316L mandatory for chloride-containing process water and offshore seawater. For urea, pharmaceuticals and high-purity water, you move to higher-nickel grades such as 904L, 254 SMO or duplex 2205. Don't mix stainless fittings with carbon-steel support hardware — contact corrosion will eat through the clamp first.
copper & nickel alloy fittings are used in heat exchangers, condensers, ship cooling systems and chemical tanks. 90/10 Cu-Ni (UNS C70600) and 70/30 Cu-Ni (C71500) are the workhorses for seawater. For more aggressive chemicals you step up to Monel 400 (N04400), Inconel 600/625, Incoloy 800/825, or Hastelloy C-276. Standards to ask for: ASTM B466 for Cu-Ni pipe, B467 for welded Cu-Ni, B366 for Inconel/Incoloy fittings.
For LNG, LPG, ethylene, ammonia and cold-climate service, use ASTM A420 WPL6 (impact-tested at −46 °C) or WPL8 (−46 °C for thicker walls). Many buyers forget this is a separate specification — and get a normal A234 WPB elbow that cracks at cold start-up.
A proper mill test certificate will list the manufacturing standard, the material grade, the heat number, and the test results. The standards that should appear on your RFQ are:
| Standard | Covers | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B16.9 | Factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings (BW) | Process, power, refinery, offshore |
| ASME B16.11 | Forged fittings — SW, threaded, outlet fittings | High-pressure small-bore (≤ 4") |
| MSS-SP-75 | Butt-weld fittings for high-temperature service | Heavy-wall, high-yield |
| MSS-SP-83 / SP-95 | Socket-weld & threaded unions | Instrument, utility |
| ASME B16.28 | Wrought buttwelding short-radius elbows | Tight-radius layouts |
| EN 10253-1 / 10253-2 | European butt-weld fittings, wrought & forged | European projects, shipbuilding |
| JIS B2311 / B2312 / B2313 | Japanese steel butt-weld fittings | Japanese projects, shipyards |
| GB/T 12459 / GB/T 13401 | Chinese butt-weld and threaded fittings | Domestic Chinese and export projects |
If your MTC only lists "ASTM A234" without a year, an ASME B16.9 reference, or a heat number traceable to a third-party PMI report, you don't have a usable certificate. Insist on EN 10204 3.1 (mill-issued) or 3.2 (third-party witnessed) — anything less should be rejected at goods-in.
Three numbers on the fitting stamp determine fit, flow and pressure rating. Get these right the first time.
A fitting does not stand alone. The bolt-up to an adjacent pipe flanges relies on matching facing (RF, FF, RTJ), pressure class (150# to 2500#), and bolt size. A common mistake is ordering a Class 300 BW fitting but Class 150 flanges — the system pressure then becomes the lower of the two.
For every flanged joint, the gasket, stud bolt & nut set must be ordered in parallel. Spiral-wound gaskets for high-temperature hydrocarbon service, ring-type joint (RTJ) gaskets for high-pressure Class 600+ service, and graphite or PTFE for lower-temperature chemical duty. Stud bolt material should match the flange — typically ASTM A193 B7 with A194 2H nuts for carbon service, B8/B8M for stainless. A grade mismatch is a frequent cause of joint leakage in commissioning.
For project volumes of more than a few tons, going through a stockist adds two to three layers of markup and — more importantly — severs the heat-number traceability you need for QA. A mill-direct pipe fittings supplier will offer:
Before you place the order, ask the mill for: (1) the list of pressure-equipment directives they hold (PED, ASME U/U2/U3, ISO 9001, possibly CE/AD 2000), (2) typical lead time for your grade and size, (3) MTC sample, and (4) third-party inspection options (SGS, BV, TUV, LR). A mill that hesitates on any of these is not yet a mill you want as a long-term supplier.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies a complete pipe fittings range out of China, organized by connection type so procurement teams can build an RFQ in one place:
The full mill-direct package is available alongside carbon & carbon alloy steel and stainless steel pipe, copper & nickel alloy tubes for heat exchangers and condensers, pipe flanges, and gasket, stud bolt & nut sets — so the heat number, MTC and shipment travel together, end to end. This avoids the most common project error: fittings and flanges arriving from two different mills on two different weeks, with two different MTC formats.
Send your isometric, line class table, and MTC requirements and EZ Steel Industrial will return a mill-direct quote covering pipe fittings, pipe flanges and the matched gasket, stud bolt & nut sets — all from one mill, one MTC, one shipment.
A 10-minute review of your fitting list with our engineering team can often cut a 5% over-spec or surface a grade mismatch before it becomes a site rework.
