Whether you are building a refinery header, a marine cooling line, or a long-distance gas pipeline, the flange is the joint that decides whether the system holds or leaks. This guide walks procurement and engineering teams through the real decisions behind choosing pipe flanges that match your service conditions, and shows how EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL backs every order with full-cycle manufacturing, certified inventory, and bundled project supply.
Flanges rarely fail on their own. They fail because someone specified the wrong face, the wrong material, or the wrong pressure class for the medium and temperature they actually carry. A carbon steel weld neck that performs beautifully in a steam header will pit in six months if it is pushed into seawater service. A slip-on that is "good enough" at 150# becomes a maintenance liability at 600#. The job of a buyer's guide is not to sell a single part, but to make the joint between piping, valves, and equipment a non-event over the life of the plant.
That is the philosophy behind how EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has organized its flange offering since 1994. Rather than a catalog of part numbers, the product line is built around the materials, standards, and pressure classes that EPC contractors and plant operators actually specify, with the matching stainless steel pipe, carbon steel pipe, and copper nickel alloy tube and pipe available from the same supplier for a single shipment.
Most piping classes are designed around the same short list of flange geometries. Once your team is fluent in these, the rest of the selection process becomes a matter of material and rating.
Flange material follows pipe material 99% of the time. If dissimilar metals are unavoidable, you need a clear electrolytic compatibility plan, not a substitution at the flange level. The table below captures the most common matchups used in the projects EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied since 1994, including South-to-North Water Diversion, the West-East Gas Pipeline, and a long list of petrochemical, power, and marine installations.
| Service / Medium | Typical Flange Material | Common Standards |
|---|---|---|
| Oil & gas, steam, non-corrosive hydrocarbons | Carbon steel (ASTM A105, A350 LF2, A694) | ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, EN 1092-1 |
| Chemical, food, pharmaceutical, clean utilities | Austenitic stainless (A182 F304/304L, F316/316L) | ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1 |
| High-temp power, refinery, sour service | Cr-Mo alloy (A182 F11/F22/F91), NACE MR0175 grades | ASME B16.5, B16.47, ASTM A182 |
| Seawater cooling, shipbuilding, offshore | 90/10 or 70/30 copper-nickel (B466, EEMUA 234) | EEMUA 234, ASME B16.5, BS 2871 |
| LNG, cryogenic storage | Austenitic stainless, A522 low-temp alloys | ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1 |
For buyers who already know the pipe is going to be steel flanges in carbon, stainless, or alloy grades, or copper nickel flanges for marine service, the next decision is standards: which pressure class, which face type, and which dimensional family.
Three dimensional families cover almost every project: ASME B16.5 for NPS 1/2 through 24, ASME B16.47 for large-diameter flanges in Series A and Series B, and EN 1092-1 for European PN-rated designs. Within each family, the pressure class (150# through 2500# for ASME, PN 2.5 through PN 400 for EN) must be matched to the design pressure and temperature, not to the pipe wall alone.
The face type is the second detail that is easy to get wrong. Raised Face (RF) is the default for most general service, Flat Face (FF) is required when mating to flat-face cast iron or glass-lined equipment, Ring Type Joint (RTJ) is used for high-pressure refinery and wellhead service, and Tongue & Groove (T&G) is common in heat exchanger and process modules. Mixing an RF flange with an FF gasket seat is one of the most common field leak paths our technical team sees on rework projects.
Always confirm the facing on the mating equipment before ordering. A 150# RF flange and a 150# FF flange share the same bolt circle and outside diameter, but they cannot be bolted together without a spacer ring. That is a 10-minute conversation up front that prevents a 10-day delivery delay on site.
A flange is only as good as the joint assembly around it. On real projects, the cost of mismatched gaskets and stud bolts can quietly exceed the cost of the flanges themselves. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships flanges as part of a complete pipe fittings package, including butt weld fittings for high-integrity runs, socket weld fittings for small-bore stainless branches, and threaded fittings for instrument and utility drops. The gasket stud bolt nut set is engineered to the same ASME or EN pressure class as the flange, so the joint ships ready to be assembled without a last-minute hardware order.
Three operational practices separate a one-off flange trader from a true project supplier. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL invests in all three, because most of our customers are repeat EPC and plant buyers who need the same joint integrity on every shipment, not just the first one.
The same supplier scope also covers industrial valves and heat efficiency tubes (including U bend tubes and finned tubes), so a heat exchanger package, a piping spool, and a header all arrive with a consistent set of documentation.
Share your line class, material, pressure rating, face type, and quantity, and our project team will return a quotation tied to a single quality file. For repeat orders, we will align this RFQ with your existing material master and ship the next batch to the same standard.
