A practical buyer's guide to choosing the right flange material, standard, and pressure class for industrial piping systems
Specifying the right material is the single most consequential decision in any pipe flanges procurement order. Get the alloy wrong and you face premature corrosion, galling, or a leak under thermal cycling. Get the standard wrong and the flanges will not mate with the existing piping on site. This guide walks through the four material families that cover roughly 95% of industrial flange applications, and explains when each one is the right call.
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied flanges, fittings, and pipe to projects from the West-East Gas Pipeline to marine cooling systems since 1994. The recommendations below reflect what actually performs in the field, not just what passes a lab test.
Four questions to answer before you order
1) What fluid or gas is in the line? 2) What is the operating temperature and pressure? 3) Is the service corrosive, cryogenic, or both? 4) Which piping standard does the rest of the system follow (ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, GOST, JIS)? Matching the answers to the right material prevents roughly 80% of field failures.
Carbon steel is the workhorse of the flange world. ASTM A105 forgings and A516 plate flanges handle the bulk of oil & gas, power plant, and process plant work where the fluid is hydrocarbons, steam, water, or air. A standard carbon steel pipe system with A105 weld neck flanges will give decades of service in ambient-temperature crude oil or natural gas service.
Carbon steel flanges are typically paired with pipe fittings in matching grades. If your line carries a low-temperature service below -29°C, switch to A350 LF2 for impact resistance. For sour service (H₂S-containing hydrocarbons per NACE MR0175), specify a controlled-hardness A105 with supplementary requirements.
Stainless flanges step in where carbon steel would corrode, contaminate, or fail under thermal stress. The 300-series austenitic grades (304/304L, 316/316L) cover most chemical, food, and pharmaceutical services. Duplex (2205) and super-duplex (2507) handle chloride-rich environments like seawater and offshore platforms. EZ Steel stocks stainless steel pipe and matching flanges in ASTM A182 F304, F316, F51, and F55 grades.
One practical note: do not mix 304 and 316 flanges in the same system without verifying galvanic compatibility. If your piping changes material mid-run, use a dielectric union or a flanged transition with isolation gaskets to prevent stray-current corrosion.
Alloy steel flanges enter the picture when service temperatures climb above 425°C or pressures push past Class 2500. The ASTM A182 F11/F12/F22 chrome-moly grades are standard for boiler and power plant headers. A182 F91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) and F92 handle supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam in modern coal-fired and combined-cycle plants.
For the piping side, these alloy flanges are usually welded to carbon and alloy steel pipe grades like ASTM A335 P11, P22, P91, or P92. The forge-to-pipe chemistry match matters: a P22 flange on P91 pipe creates a hard-zone in the weld that will crack in service. Always confirm the UNS designation on both the flange and the pipe match.
When the fluid is seawater or brackish cooling water, copper-nickel is the only sensible choice for the flanged connections. The 90/10 (CuNi10Fe1Mn) and 70/30 (CuNi30Fe1Mn) alloys resist biofouling, galvanic attack, and erosion-corrosion far better than stainless in continuous seawater immersion. EEMUA 234, ASTM B466, and ASME SB151 are the standards to specify.
The copper nickel flanges EZ Steel supplies are stocked in 90/10 for hull piping, FPSO cooling systems, and desalination plant intake lines, with 70/30 available for higher-temperature or higher-velocity service. Pair them with matching Cu-Ni stub ends and you eliminate the bimetallic joints that so often fail in marine service.
Quick Comparison: Which Material When?
| Material | Best for | Avoid in |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel (A105) | Oil, gas, steam, water up to 425°C | Strong acids, chlorides >200 ppm |
| 304/316 Stainless | Chemical, food, pharma, mild chloride | Concentrated chlorides, hot brine |
| Duplex 2205 | Offshore, seawater splash, chloride-rich | Sustained >300°C service |
| Alloy Steel (F11/F22/F91) | Boilers, high-temp headers, supercritical steam | Ambient-temperature non-corrosive service (cost-inefficient) |
| Copper-Nickel 90/10 | Seawater, desalination, marine cooling | Ammonia, mercury, high-velocity >3.5 m/s |
Material gets you halfway. The other half is the facing and pressure class, which must match the gasket and the service conditions:
A common spec error is ordering Class 150 RF flanges for a Class 300 line. The bolt circle, gasket dimensions, and flange thickness all change. Verify the pressure class against the system design pressure and temperature with a generous safety factor, especially for steam or thermal cycling service.
Do not accept "ASTM flange" as a complete spec. A buyer-grade callout includes the material spec, the dimensional standard, and the pressure class. Examples of a complete callout:
A mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) should accompany every shipment. For nuclear, offshore, or sour-service applications, ask for 3.2 certification with third-party witness inspection.
The bigger the project, the more value comes from consolidating procurement. EZ Steel Industrial supplies steel flanges alongside pipe, fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and pipe fittings from one factory footprint, which means matched heat numbers, consistent MTCs, and a single point of accountability if something needs tracing. For turnkey packages on a refinery turnaround, FPSO module, or desalination plant, this is usually the difference between a clean site delivery and a stack of back-charges.
Need a flange quote that actually matches your line class?
Send your datasheet (fluid, temperature, pressure, pipe spec, quantity) to EZ Steel Industrial and you will get a quote back with material options, lead time, and a sample MTC within one business day. Whether it is a one-off Class 600 weld neck or a 5,000-piece carbon and stainless bundle, the same engineering team reviews every line.
