Why procurement teams who treat line pipe, fittings, flanges and gaskets as one package — not four separate POs — finish projects faster and with fewer field surprises.
Most articles on pipeline works stop at the pipe: which standard, which grade, which wall thickness. In real EPC execution, the line pipe usually makes up the bulk of the tonnage, and everything that connects, branches, supports and seals it makes up the rest. When those items arrive from four different vendors, schedule risk and weld-interface risk rise sharply. When they arrive from a single source that mills the pipe and stocks the matching fittings, both risks fall.
This guide looks at pipeline works from the field engineer's perspective: what to specify, what to bundle, and where a full-cycle mill partner adds the most value.
For onshore oil & gas and water transmission, three specification families cover most procurements. Which one to pick comes down to the fluid, the design pressure and the regulatory environment of the project country.
API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 line pipe remains the most widely specified for crude, natural gas and multiproduct pipelines. PSL2 adds mandatory CVN impact testing at 0 °C and stricter chemical control, which is what most operators now require by default. Where a project must reference an ISO document instead of API, ISO 3183 steel pipe (PSL1 to PSL3, per ISO 3183:2019) is the equivalent and is fully traceable to API 5L grade families. Common grades are X42, X52, X60, X65 and X70, with X80 used on high-pressure transmission mains.
Where a line is water, air, steam or low-pressure process service, ASTM A53 (welded, Type F/E) and ASTM A106 (seamless, Grades A/B/C) are the more economical choices. Both are stocked in large volumes by full-line distributors and ship quickly to site. A106 Grade C is the higher-strength seamless option for refinery and power-plant piping.
For projects engineered to European norms, EN 10208 covers L245 to L485 line pipe for flammable fluids, while EN 10216-2 covers seamless pressure tubes for high-temperature service. Specifying both together — EN 10208 pipe with EN 10216 fittings — avoids the cross-standard weld qualification work that slows down mixed-spec jobs.
Practical tip: before finalising a line-pipe order, lock the standard, the PSL level, the delivery condition (as-rolled, normalized, quenched and tempered) and the impact-test temperature in one document. This single sheet will be referenced 30+ times downstream by fitting, flange and gasket sub-orders.
Fittings are where most field rework originates, because they are ordered in haste against an evolving isometric list. A coherent pipe fittings package keeps three things consistent: the same base material as the line, the same end connection family, and the same standard for dimensional and testing requirements.
When the line pipe is ordered from one source and the fittings from a separate vendor, mismatches in material certificates, CE marking or hardness values are the most common cause of "weld procedure failed" stoppages at site. A single bundled PO eliminates this category of delay.
On a 50 km cross-country pipeline, the number of flanged joints is small relative to the welded joints, but each one is a long-lead item if the pressure class, facing type and bolt specification are not fixed early. For onshore process and station piping, the workhorse is the steel flange family under ASME B16.5 (NPS ½ to 24) and ASME B16.47 Series A & B (NPS 26 and above).
Carbon steel flanges (ASTM A105 for forged, A216 WCB for cast) match A106 / A53 / API 5L line pipe. Stainless flanges (ASTM A182 F304/F316) match 304/316 stainless pipe. For marine and seawater service, the choice shifts to copper nickel flanges (90/10 Cu-Ni per EEMUA 234, or 70/30 Cu-Ni where erosion is a concern). Specifying the wrong flange material is the single most expensive gasket-compatibility error on a copper-nickel cooling water main.
The facing (RF, FF, RTJ), the pressure class (150# to 2500#) and the bolt specification must be agreed together. A Class 600 RTJ joint on a 316L pipe needs spiral-wound or RTJ gaskets and stud bolts rated to ASTM A193 B7 / A194 2H — all items that should travel in the same shipment as the flanges themselves.
A leak at a flange joint is rarely a flange problem. It is almost always a gasket, a bolt, or a torque-procedure problem. Treating gasket, stud bolt and nut sets as a separate, low-priority PO is the most common mistake in pipeline works procurement. In practice, the right spiral-wound gasket with the correct inner ring, plus matched stud bolts and nuts, is what stands between a hydrostatic test pass and a re-work loop.
Where the line carries seawater, brine, sour service or a corrosive chemical, stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312 / EN 10216-5 / GOST 9941) and copper nickel alloy tubes (ASTM B466, EEMUA 234, BS 2871) extend service life by decades. The matching fittings, flanges and bolting for these materials are usually a small fraction of the line-pipe weight, but they take the longest to source because most distributors do not stock them. A full-cycle supplier that holds these in inventory alongside carbon line pipe is the fastest path to a complete package.
A practical line-pipe package for a typical 30 km, 16" gas transmission project would look like this in a real bill of materials:
When all four sub-packages are quoted, scheduled, MTC-traced and shipped by one team against one project file, the field receives a kit that installs in order, with no missing transition pieces. That is what experienced EPC procurement teams mean when they ask for a "single source of accountability" — and it is the standard working model for pipeline works that finish on schedule.
EZ Steel Industrial (est. 1994, Changsha, China) supplies line pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves from a single mill-direct inventory, with 480,000+ tons of annual capacity and full API / EN / ASME / ISO 9001 compliance. Whether your project is a 5 km utility line or a multi-product transmission system, the team can build a bundled quote that covers the pipe, the connections and the sealing set in one shipment sequence.
