Most pipeline delays do not come from a missing pipe. They come from a missing pressure-boundary match between the pipe, the fittings, the flanges, and the bolting that ties them together. This guide shows how a coordinated pipeline works bundle is built so that engineering, procurement, and site erection stay in step from MTR to hydrotest.
When a specifier or EPC buyer opens a requisition for pipeline works, they are rarely asking for one item. The scope usually spans the line pipe itself, the directional changes, the connections, and the joints that hold pressure inside the system. At minimum, a complete pipeline works package covers four product families: line pipe, butt-weld or socket-weld fittings, weld-neck or slip-on flanges, and the gaskets with stud bolts that complete each joint.
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied bundled pipeline works since 1994, with eight product lines manufactured or sourced under one quality system. Rather than treat each item as a separate purchase order, the company organizes the package around the operating envelope of the line: design pressure, design temperature, the fluid being transported, and the applicable fabrication code (ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, or equivalent). That structure is what makes the difference between a clean hydrotest and a punch list full of mismatched weld preps.
A working definition
Pipeline works is the coordinated supply of line pipe plus the fittings, flanges, and bolting that connect it, all rated to the same design code so the assembly can be welded, bolted, tested, and put into service as a single pressure system.
The first decision on a pipeline works package is rarely the material grade. It is the standard. Three families cover almost every transmission and process piping project: API 5L for oil and gas transmission, ISO 3183 for cross-border tenders that need to align with both API and EN conventions, and the GB/T 9711 family for projects inside the Chinese system. Each standard speaks its own language for PSL1 vs PSL2, for delivery condition, and for traceability.
EZ Steel Industrial publishes parallel coverage under all three. The carbon and alloy steel line spans API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 grades from A25 through X80, EN 10208 L245 through L485 for European oil and gas, ISO 3183 PSL1 to PSL3 for international tenders, and GOST 20295 K60 for high-pressure gas line pipe. Where the line pipe is carbon steel pipe for power-plant or refinery service, ASTM A106/A106M, ASTM A53, and ASTM A252 cover the other end of the spectrum from high-temperature seamless to low-pressure welded and to structural piling.
| Standard Family | Typical Use | Grade Range Available | PSL / Delivery Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| API 5L | Oil and gas transmission pipelines | A25 through X80 | PSL1 and PSL2; PSL2 mandatory for sour service |
| ISO 3183 | Cross-border oil and gas tenders | L245 through L690 (X100) | PSL1, PSL2, PSL3 with aligned CE marking |
| GB/T 9711 | Domestic Chinese pipeline projects | L245 through L555 | PSL1 and PSL2, equivalent to API 5L |
| EN 10208 | European oil and gas flammable-fluid lines | L245 through L485 | EN-equivalent grades for EU tenders |
| ASTM A106 / A53 | Refinery, power, low-pressure fluid service | Gr. A, B, C | Seamless high-temp or welded general service |
A line pipe spec is not just a grade. It is a combination of manufacturing route, pipe form, and test regime. A typical pipeline works package will pull from at least three forms depending on the diameter and operating pressure. For diameters below 16 inches, seamless (SMLS) and ERW pipe dominate. From 16 inches upward, LSAW (JCOE) is the workhorse for transmission, and HSAW (spiral) is often specified for water and slurry lines where the diameter runs larger and the pressure is moderate.
EZ Steel Industrial's pipeline works catalog is organized around exactly this split. The product list reads in the same order a specifier writes a requisition: API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 line pipe, ISO 3183 seamless and welded, EN 10208 L245 to L485, GOST 20295 K60 high-strength gas line pipe, Q195 to Q345 GB/T 3091 welded tubes, ASTM A53 galvanized and welded for low-pressure systems, and ASTM A106/A106M seamless for high-temperature refineries and power plants. Each item is matched to a standard, a delivery condition, and a testing scope, so the buyer is never comparing apples to bolts.
A line pipe is only as good as the joint that ends it. Once the standard and grade are fixed, every fitting, flange, and gasket has to be qualified against the same design code. This is where most field problems start, because the pipe package and the fitting package are often procured from two different suppliers on two different schedules.
The fix is to bundle them. EZ Steel Industrial supplies the complementary items from the same parent mill network: pipe fittings covering butt-weld, socket-weld, and threaded forms in carbon, stainless, and alloy steel; pipe flanges in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and copper-nickel; and gaskets, stud bolts, and nuts that close the joint. Each family carries its own standard reference — ASME B16.9 for butt-weld fittings, ASME B16.5 for flanges up to 24 inches, ASME B16.47 for larger diameters, ASME B16.11 for socket-weld and threaded, and ASME B16.20 for spiral-wound gaskets — so the whole assembly can be justified to the inspector under one rule book.
Why a coordinated bundle cuts project risk
When the line pipe is API 5L X65 PSL2 and the matching flange is ASME B16.5 Class 600 in A694 F65, the metallurgical pedigree is the same, the CEV is the same, and the MTRs roll up under one traceability path. That is what the inspector asks for at the hydrotest, and it is what most field delays trace back to when it is missing.
For any pipeline works quote, the variables that swing the price and the lead time the most are not the grade. They are the test and inspection requirements. PSL2 line pipe adds mandatory Charpy impact testing, explicit CEV limits, and a defined delivery condition. Sour service (NACE MR0175) adds hardness limits, HIC testing, and SSC testing. Offshore and subsea adds DNV or equivalent third-party survey. Each of these additions changes the heat-treatment cycle and the documentation pack.
EZ Steel Industrial's quality system is built on API, EN, and ASME certification, with an ISO 9001-accredited laboratory. Mill test reports, third-party inspection reports from bodies such as SGS, BV, or TUV, and project-specific supplementary requirements (for example, EN 10204 3.2 certification) can all be folded into the same procurement package. That matters when the project schedule does not allow a 60-day re-quote once the inspector's comments land.
Most specifiers are not designing a pipeline from a blank sheet. They are repeating a pattern that has worked on a similar project. The EZ Steel Industrial reference base covers the four most common patterns:
Project pattern: 200 km gas transmission line
A typical long-haul gas pipeline works bundle for a 200 km, 36-inch class line would be specified as API 5L X70 PSL2, LSAW (JCOE) for the trunk, ERW for the launcher and receiver barrels, ASME B16.5 Class 600 weld-neck flanges at the MLV stations, ASME B16.9 butt-weld elbows in A860 WPHY 70 matching the line pipe, and ASME B16.20 spiral-wound gaskets with ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts and A194 2H nuts. Bundled under one MTR package, the line can pass the hydrotest in sections rather than as a single 200 km string.
A pipeline works order is not delivered in a box. Pipe is shipped in 12-meter joints or 18-meter double-random lengths, fittings in wooden crates, and flanges in strapped bundles on pallets. Coating — whether 3LPE, FBE, or internal epoxy — has to be coordinated with the lifting and stacking plan to avoid damage in transit. For long international shipments, the supplier's export documentation and the buyer's port-handling plan need to align from the first PO, not from the first vessel call.
EZ Steel Industrial ships from Chinese ports with full export documentation, and can hold inventory of the most common ASTM A106, A53, and A312 grades in standard sizes for project-cleared call-off. That inventory buffer is what lets buyers compress their procurement schedule when the EPC front-end shifts.
A clean pipeline works quote comes back in days, not weeks, when the following information is supplied with the inquiry: the applicable standard (API 5L, ISO 3183, EN 10208, GB/T 9711, ASTM), the grade and PSL level, the diameter range and wall thickness schedule, the pipe form (seamless, ERW, LSAW, HSAW), the delivery condition (as-rolled, normalized, quenched and tempered), the test and inspection scope, the coating requirement, and the documentation pack. With that information, the team can return a complete package covering line pipe, fittings, flanges, and bolting on a single document set.
