How to specify pipeline works line pipe the way EPC contractors, refinery buyers and water authorities actually do it — with material clarity, grade mapping, bundled sourcing and a clean RFQ.
Most line pipe gets ordered the same way: someone pulls a spec sheet, copies last project's grade onto a purchase order, and the mill runs a standard PSL2 X65. That works most of the time — until it doesn't. Sour service, hydrogen sulfide, low-temperature Arctic lines, desalinated water with high chloride, or a subsea tie-back all change the answer. This guide walks through how pipeline works line pipe should be selected in 2026, which standard applies to which service, and how to source the pipe together with the matching fittings, flanges, valves and gaskets in one package.
In a piping class table, pipeline works refers to the long-run pipe used to move fluids between facilities: cross-country gas trunk lines, oil gathering networks, water transmission mains, mine slurry lines and product pipelines for refineries. It is distinct from plant pressure tubes (which are the in-plant boiler and process lines) and from structure works (which carry load, not fluid).
Because pipeline works usually runs for kilometres rather than metres, the purchase is dominated by tonnage, not by count. Every kilogram of over-specified steel is paid for twice: once at procurement and again in shipping, handling and field welding. Choosing the lowest grade that still meets the design service is therefore a real engineering decision, not a procurement shortcut.
There is no single global line pipe standard. Buyers tend to default to one based on geography, but a well-written RFQ should name the standard and the edition so the mill is quoting against the same document.
API 5L is the dominant standard for oil and gas transmission worldwide. It covers both seamless and welded pipe, grades from A25 up to X120, and two product specification levels: PSL1 (basic requirements) and PSL2 (tighter chemistry, mandatory impact testing, full traceability). PSL2 also includes sub-categories for sour service (Annex H), offshore service (Annex J) and PSL2-only enhanced delivery conditions. For most cross-country oil and gas, PSL2 from X42 to X70 covers everything you will ever need.
ISO 3183 aligns the international pipeline industry with the API 5L format, and is the standard referenced by most European and Middle Eastern EPC contractors. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL stocks PSL1 through PSL3 line pipe to ISO 3183:2019, which gives project engineers a clean way to specify an international grade without locking the project into one country's certification system.
EN 10208 is the European standard for flammable fluid transport pipelines. The "L" grades (L245, L290, L360, L415, L450, L485) are the European equivalent of API 5L X42 through X70. For projects in the EU or for buyers who need CE-marked pipe, EN 10208 is the correct reference.
Russian-spec K60 and Chinese-spec Q195–Q345 cover the CIS and Chinese domestic markets, and are also the reference for many Africa and Southeast Asia tenders. K60, in particular, is a 600 MPa yield strength line pipe widely used in high-pressure gas transmission.
Line pipe is not a commodity grade selection. The grade, the PSL level and the supplementary requirement all depend on what is flowing through the line. The table below summarises the typical match between service and standard.
| Service | Recommended Standard | Typical Grade | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-country natural gas trunk line | API 5L PSL2 / ISO 3183 PSL2 | X65 / L450 | Sour service Annex H if H2S present |
| Oil transmission (sweet) | API 5L PSL2 / EN 10208 | X60 / X65 / L415 / L450 | Standard 3.1 MTC package |
| Oil transmission (sour) | API 5L PSL2 Annex H | X65 with HIC/SSC test | Hardness limit ≤ 22 HRC, NACE TM0175 |
| Water transmission / desalinated water | API 5L / EN 10208 / ISO 3183 | X42 / L245 or L360 | Consider internal cement-mortar or epoxy lining |
| Municipal water, low pressure | ASTM A53 / GB/T 3091 | Q235B / Q345 | Galvanised or welded, cost-driven |
| Mine slurry tailings | API 5L PSL2 with abrasion overlay | X60 with CRA overlay | Consider internal HDPE or rubber lining |
| Subsea flowline / riser | API 5L PSL2 Annex J | X65 / X70 | Tighter dimensional tolerance, full NDT |
For water, fire main and low-pressure utility lines, the carbon steel pipe family is usually the most cost-effective answer. For chemical, offshore and subsea systems, the stainless steel pipe and copper nickel alloy families take over, but those are not typical line pipe applications.
A practical headache on international tenders is that a buyer writes API 5L X65, a European supplier offers EN 10208 L450, and a Russian supplier offers K60. They are the same pipe. The mapping below is what most project engineers use to keep multi-vender bids comparable.
| API 5L | ISO 3183 | EN 10208 | Min. Yield (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|
| X42 | L290 | L290 | 290 |
| X46 | L320 | L320 | 320 |
| X52 | L360 | L360 | 360 |
| X56 | L390 | L390 | 390 |
| X60 | L415 | L415 | 415 |
| X65 | L450 | L450 | 450 |
| X70 | L485 | L485 | 485 |
| X80 | L555 | L555 (limited) | 555 |
Always confirm the edition and the supplementary requirement before accepting a substitution. PSL2 in API 5L includes mandatory CVN impact testing at 0 °C, while ISO 3183 PSL2 lets the buyer choose the test temperature. Two nominally "X65" pipes from different mills can have very different low-temperature behaviour.
The four common manufacturing routes each have a sweet spot.
For most hydrocarbon pipelines in the X60 to X70 range, the modern choice is ERW or LSAW with full seam normalisation and 100% ultrasonic plus radiographic inspection of the weld. Seamless is still preferred for sour service headers, hot reheat lines and any location where a weld seam would be difficult to inspect in service.
Bare line pipe rarely goes into the ground. The coating selection is just as important as the pipe grade and should be specified at the same time as the line pipe itself.
The single biggest source of mismatch on a pipeline project is having the pipe from one supplier, the pipe fittings from a second, the pipe flanges from a third, and the industrial valves from a fourth. The pipe arrives on the right schedule, but the elbows are two weeks late and the flanges are drilled to a different standard. The field crew ends up welding adapters in the middle of a hot section.
Bundled procurement solves that. One mill supplies the full pipeline package: line pipe, induction bends, pup pieces, matching elbows and tees, flanges in the same pressure class, gasket stud bolt nut kits and the block-valve assemblies. All materials carry one QA system, one heat-number traceability chain, and one MTC package. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been running this kind of bundled supply since 1994, with a 480,000-ton annual capacity from its mill in Changsha, China.
A clean RFQ gets a clean quotation. The following ten items should appear in the first email so the mill can fix the price, the lead time and the MTC scope on the first pass.
A national gas company is building a 50 km transmission line, NPS 28 (OD 711 mm), design pressure 80 bar, design temperature -10 °C, sweet service, buried. The line pipe spec is API 5L PSL2 X65, LSAW with 3LPE external coating and FBE internal lining, random length 12 m. Total quantity is around 18,000 tonnes.
The same RFQ is sent for the matching fittings: 12 induction bends, 24 mitre elbows, 80 factory-coated pup pieces, plus the main line block-valve assemblies and the scraper launcher/receiver piping. Sourcing the entire package from one mill means one MTC index, one delivery sequence, and one warranty. The field welding crew deals with one technical contact, not four.
Pipeline works line pipe is one of the most specification-driven products in the steel industry. The grade, the PSL level, the manufacturing route, the coating, the fittings and the documentation all have to line up before the first pipe goes into the ground. Get the RFQ right, match the standard to the service, and source the line pipe together with the elbows, flanges, valves and gaskets in one bundled package. The project stays on schedule, the QC file closes cleanly, and the line goes into service without surprises.
If you are planning a gas, oil, water or slurry pipeline, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can deliver API 5L / ISO 3183 / EN 10208 line pipe together with matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges, industrial valves and gasket stud bolt nut kits from one mill.
