Pressure Tubes / Boiler & Heat-Exchanger Service / Cross-Standard Sourcing
How to map ASTM, EN, GB, JIS and GOST pressure tube specifications to the right service envelope, and why a mill-direct bundle — pressure tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves from the same heat-number batch — saves weeks on a project RFQ.
Walk into any utility boiler house, refinery, ethylene plant or LNG facility and you will find thousands of small-diameter tubes doing the hardest work in the plant. They sit inside fired heaters, superheaters, reheaters, waste-heat boilers, economisers, condensers and heat exchangers, carrying steam, feedwater, process gas, hydrocarbon, or cooling water at temperatures that range from sub-zero LNG service to 650 °C ultra-supercritical steam. The generic name for this family of tubes is pressure tubes, and the difference between a 30-year service life and a one-year leak almost always traces back to whether the right standard, grade and testing regime was specified before the order was placed.
This guide distills what the engineering desk at EZ Steel Industrial has learned from supplying pressure tube packages to power plants, refineries, chemical complexes, shipyards and EPC contractors since 1994. We work from our base in Changsha, China, with 500+ staff and an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, supplying API / EN / ASME certified pipe with ISO 9001 laboratory accreditation. The recommendations below are field-tested across the China West-East Gas Pipeline, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, petrochemical plant piping, marine vessel systems and steam power plant pipelines.
In the standards world, the term "pressure tube" is used loosely. ASTM, EN, GB, JIS and GOST each have their own family of specifications, and the easiest mistake a procurement team can make is to assume that "pressure tube" maps to a single grade or wall-thickness class. It does not. A pressure tube is defined by three things at once:
Get any one of those three wrong and the tube still arrives on site, passes visual inspection, and welds into the bundle. The failure mode shows up 18 to 36 months into service, when the creep life runs out, the corrosion cell opens, or the weld HAZ sensitises. The cheapest way to avoid that is to specify the service envelope first, then ask which standard family fits, then lock the grade inside that family.
Pressure tube selection is dominated by temperature and corrosion, not by pressure rating. Wall thickness and schedule are a downstream consequence. The five material families below cover virtually every industrial service the EZ Steel engineering desk sees on a typical quarter.
Carbon steel is the workhorse of the boiler island. ASTM A192/A192M covers seamless carbon steel boiler tubes for high-pressure service, with the typical 2024 edition tightening dimensional and NDT requirements. ASTM A210/A210M is the medium-carbon seamless tube for boilers, superheaters and heat-exchanger service. GB 5310 covers the equivalent 20G, 20MnG, 25MnG, 15CrMoG and 12Cr1MoVG grades used widely in Chinese utility boilers. JIS G3461 STB340, STB410 and STB510 cover the same envelope in Japanese utility and industrial boiler practice. EZ Steel stocks the equivalent carbon steel pipe family across A106, A192, A210 and the GB/T 8163 / 5310 grades for the same kind of service.
Above about 450 °C on the metal temperature, plain carbon steel creeps too fast. The low-alloy ferritic grades take over. ASTM A335/A335M covers P1, P5, P11, P12, P22, P91 and P122 for seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe for high-temperature service. The Chinese equivalent is GB 5310 with grades 15CrMoG, 12Cr1MoVG, 12Cr2MoWVTiB, and the T/P91 / T/P92 families for ultra-supercritical duty. EN 10216-2 covers 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10, X10CrMoVNb9-1 (T/P91) and X11CrMoWVNb9-1-1 (T/P92) for European utility practice. EZ Steel pairs these low-alloy tubes with the same heat-number pipe fittings and the matching steel flanges (typically ASTM A182 F11 / F22 / F91) so the bolted joint does not break the metallurgical chain.
For metal temperatures above 600 °C and for any process-side fluid that would attack carbon or low-alloy steel, the austenitic stainless family takes over. ASTM A213/A213M covers TP304H, TP316H, TP321, TP321H, TP347, TP347H, TP310S and the newer HR3C / Super304H for USC and advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) duty. EN 10216-5 covers 1.4301, 1.4404, 1.4541, 1.4571 and the higher-nickel / higher-chrome grades. GB/T 13296 is the Chinese equivalent for boiler and heat-exchanger tubes, and GB/T 14976 covers general industrial stainless pipe. JIS G3463 STB340-S, STBA22-S, SUS304TB, SUS316TB and SUS321TB cover the Japanese practice. EZ Steel's stainless steel pipe family covers the full pressure-tube, pipeline-works and structure-works range across these five standard families.
Where the carried fluid is seawater, brackish cooling water, or a chloride-bearing process stream, austenitic 316L can suffer crevice and pitting attack. Duplex 2205 (S32205 / S31803) and super-duplex 2507 (S32750) give a step change in chloride stress-corrosion-cracking resistance, with roughly double the yield strength of 316L allowing thinner walls and lighter bundles. EZ Steel supplies duplex and super-duplex pressure tubes to ASTM A789 / A790 and EN 10216-5, typically paired with matching copper nickel alloy trim coolers in the same bundle.
For the highest-temperature petrochemical service (ethylene cracking TLE, hydrocracker reactors, CCR platforms) and for seawater / marine coolers, the nickel and copper-nickel families are the right answer. Inconel 600 (N06600), Inconel 800H/HT (N08810/N08811), Monel 400 (N04400) and the higher-chrome Inconel 625 (N06625) cover the nickel side. Copper-nickel 90/10 (C70600) and 70/30 (C71500) cover the marine side, typically to ASTM B111, B466, EEMUA 234, BS 2871, EN 12451 and GB/T 8890. EZ Steel's copper nickel alloy programme covers all of these grades, and pairs the alloy tubes with the matching Cu-Ni flanges and Cu-Ni butt-weld fittings to avoid galvanic mismatch at the joint.
The table below maps the most common service envelopes to a recommended material family and the governing standards on each side of the supply chain. Mill-desk rule: if a project specification lets you choose between two standards, pick the one that aligns with the project's other components. A power plant built to ASME design will move faster if the boiler tubes are also to ASTM A213 / A335; a Chinese utility EPC will move faster with GB 5310 paired with EN 10216-2 for the European-sourced headers. Mixing two standard families on the same line doubles the QA paperwork and slows down site reception.
Once the material and standard are fixed, the next decision is the testing regime. Not all pressure tubes are tested the same way, and a mill that offers only "hydrostatic test" is leaving you exposed on the rest of the NDT envelope. The five tests a mill-direct pressure tube should always be able to produce to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 are:
A complete pressure tube shipment should arrive with a mill test certificate (MTC) covering all five tests, traceable to the heat number marked on each tube. EZ Steel ships with EN 10204 3.1 as standard and upgrades to 3.2 (third-party witnessed) for nuclear, offshore and critical refinery service.
A boiler or heat-exchanger bundle is a system, and the tube is only one component. The same pressure tube almost always has to be welded to matching pipe fittings (elbows, tees, reducers, return bends), bolted between matching pipe flanges, and isolated by matching industrial valves on the inlet and outlet headers. If any of those four components is sourced separately, three things start to go wrong at site:
This is the practical reason mill-direct sourcing has displaced stockist sourcing in the pressure-tube market over the last decade. EZ Steel was set up around this idea from day one: tube, fitting, flange, valve and (where relevant) heat-efficiency tube bundle all come from the same facility in Changsha, with the same heat-number traceability, the same EN 10204 certificate level, and the same export documentation. A full heat efficiency tube package — base tube, finned tube, U-bend return, header and economiser piping — can be quoted and shipped as a single PO.
Pitfall to avoid: never accept a "tube only" quote from a mill and then source the fittings and flanges from a separate stockist. The stockist will almost certainly re-import a lower-grade product from a different mill to hit a price, and the QA package you receive at site will not match the one you negotiated.
An MTC for a pressure tube order is only as useful as the buyer's ability to read it. Five things to check on every certificate before you sign the receiving report:
A clean RFQ reaches a mill-direct supplier and returns a clean bid in five working days or less, if the right information is on the table. The minimum data set is:
A pressure-tube RFQ that includes all seven items above is something an experienced mill can quote in hours, not days. An RFQ that omits one or two almost always produces a "price on application" reply that requires two or three rounds of clarification before it can be compared against competing bids.
Three shifts are reshaping the pressure-tube market as of mid-2026, and each one affects what a buyer's RFQ should look like:
A related trend is the slow replacement of GOST 8732 and GOST 9940 with the equivalent EN and ASTM grades on cross-border projects, especially in the CIS and Middle East. GOST-grade pressure tube orders are still common, but a mill that can dual-certify to both GOST 8732 and EN 10216-2 on the same heat saves the buyer one round of re-testing at the destination port.
A few mistakes the EZ Steel engineering desk sees on a recurring basis, even from experienced procurement teams:
Pressure tube selection is a system-level decision. The tube, the fittings, the flanges, the gaskets and the valves have to tell the same metallurgical story, be documented against the same standard, and arrive at site in the same packaging batch. Working with a manufacturer who can deliver that bundle — and stand behind it with a single point of accountability — turns procurement from a sequence of phone calls into a clean, auditable supply chain.
If you are weighing grade options, comparing standards, or trying to consolidate multiple SKUs into a single shipment, the engineering desk at EZ Steel Industrial is happy to walk through your project with you. Send your line list, design conditions and destination port and we will return a clean, fully-documented bid within five working days. Common ASTM A106, A53, A192, A210, A213, A335, A312, A249, A269 and A554 grades are held in stock for fast shipment, with custom orders running 4–6 weeks from PO.
