A field-proven specification walkthrough from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL — covering material selection, dimensional control, NDT scope, and bundled procurement for power, petrochemical, and boiler projects.
A pressure tube failure rarely starts with the tube itself. It usually starts with the specification: a wrong grade for the service temperature, a wall-thickness assumption that ignores corrosion allowance, or a hydrotest scope that misses the weld zone. On real projects — a 600 MW boiler, a hydrocracker reactor feed line, a refinery steam header — these small misses become unscheduled shutdowns.
This guide collects what we have learned supplying carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe pressure tubing to power, petrochemical, and boiler-making clients since 1994. It is written for project engineers, EPC procurement teams, and QA managers who have to turn a piping class into a purchase order that will not come back as a rejection report.
The most common mistake we see is selecting a tube grade from a stock list before the design temperature and pressure are locked. The ASTM family is structured around service envelope, and each grade has a clear operating window:
If you are below 400 °C and need a seamless low-cost tube for condensers, think ASTM A179. If you are at 400–550 °C in a fire-side boiler tube, you are in A192 territory. Above 550 °C with creep concerns, A213 T11/T22/T91 stainless or alloy grades take over. Process piping above 425 °C, especially in refineries, is dominated by A106 Gr.B and A335 P11/P22.
| Standard / Grade | Typical Service | Max Recommended Temp. | Key Selection Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A179 / A179M | Heat exchangers, condensers, low-pressure feedwater | ≈ 400 °C | Low-carbon seamless, tight wall tolerance for finning |
| ASTM A192 / A192M | High-pressure boiler tubes, superheaters | ≈ 480 °C | Medium-carbon seamless, thicker minimum wall |
| ASTM A106 Gr.B / Gr.C | Refinery, power plant, high-temp process piping | ≈ 425 °C | Most common seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temp service |
| ASTM A213 T11 / T22 / T91 | Boiler tubes, superheaters, reheaters | 560 – 625 °C | Ferritic alloy, creep-resistant, mandatory NDT |
| EN 10216-2 P235/P265 | European pressure service | ≈ 400 °C | European equivalent for high-temp seamless |
Once the grade family is fixed, then — and only then — open the dimensional chart (ASME B36.10M for carbon, B36.19M for stainless) and apply corrosion allowance, mill negative tolerance, and bending thinning.
A purchasing specification should answer six questions without ambiguity. If any answer is open to interpretation, you are inviting a clarification loop and a delayed shipment.
For high-pressure pressure tubes in petrochemical and power service, we also recommend adding a clause on the maximum permitted number of repair welds per tube and a clause on hardness limits (typical cap: 197 HB for A106 Gr.B to keep weldability in the safe zone).
Two dimensional issues cause most field rework: out-of-tolerance OD and wall thickness swing.
OD tolerance. Cold-drawn seamless tubes offer much tighter OD control than hot-finished, but you pay a premium and the delivery is longer. For boiler applications where the tube will be finned or expanded into a tubesheet, the tighter OD reduces machining and rejects.
Wall thickness. ASTM A179 allows ±10 % on nominal wall, but a real 0.5 mm negative on a 2 mm wall is a 25 % loss of pressure margin. On critical service, specify minimum wall (not nominal wall) and require the MTR to report actual wall per tube length.
For high-pressure boiler tubes, the cheapest insurance you can buy is a -0 % / +10 % wall tolerance with 100 % UT instead of ET. ET is fast, but it is surface-sensitive; UT catches mid-wall laminations that ET will miss on cold-drawn tube.
A standard hydrotest at 1.5× design pressure is the floor, not the ceiling. For seamless carbon and alloy pressure tubes, we recommend a layered inspection plan:
When the project is EN 10216-2 based rather than ASTM, the equivalent scope is described in EN 10216-2 §6 with 2014/2014 amendment test updates. Make sure the mill quote references the correct annex.
Pressure tubing rarely ships alone. On a typical boiler or refinery package, the same engineering package also covers pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and industrial valves. Splitting these into separate purchase orders creates three coordination problems: mismatched delivery dates, inconsistent MTR traceability, and three inspection visits instead of one.
A bundled package solves all three. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been shipping such packages for over 30 years. The flow looks like this in practice:
Across more than 480,000 tons of annual capacity, the same four issues appear on roughly 80 % of rejected lots. They are all preventable at the specification stage.
| Rejection Cause | Root Cause | Prevention in the Spec |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness out of range | Quenched and tempered supply delivered as hot-finished | State required heat-treatment condition explicitly; require HB on MTR |
| Wall below minimum | Mill negative tolerance not checked against minimum wall | Specify "minimum wall" and require actual wall per tube in MTR |
| Surface defects on cold-drawn tube | ET only, no UT | Add 100 % UT for tubes in high-pressure service |
| MTR grade mismatch | Heat number not linked across pipe, fittings, flanges | Require single-heat traceability across the bundled PO |
Before sending the purchase order, walk through this final list. If you can answer "yes" to all eight, the lot will pass incoming inspection on the first try.
