Engineering Procurement Field Note
A field-tested walkthrough for EPC buyers, project engineers and procurement managers who want one coordinated package instead of five separate headaches.
Anyone who has run an EPC, refinery turnaround or offshore piping project knows the same painful truth: a piping system is not made of pipes alone. It is a chain of pipe fittings, bolted pipe flanges, isolation industrial valves and the small but critical sealing hardware that holds the line together under pressure, heat and corrosion. If even one link in that chain is wrong — wrong material, wrong schedule, wrong MTC, wrong delivery window — the whole package slips.
This walkthrough pulls together the project-level lessons we have learned at EZ Steel Industrial from 30+ years of bundled supply. It is written for the buyer who has just been handed a piping isometric, an MTO and a tight commissioning date, and who wants one source of accountability from RFQ to site delivery.
The single biggest reason a piping package arrives on site with the wrong components is that procurement starts from a part list, not from a service environment. A 2" 300# weldolet in ASTM A105 is the right call for a sweet hydrocarbon line. It is the wrong call for a sour service hydrogen sulfide line, a steam header above 425°C, or a seawater cooling loop.
Before any RFQ is sent, lock down four environmental parameters for every line class:
Once these are written into a line class table, the material and standard for every fitting, flange and valve follows. Procurement stops arguing about brands and starts verifying compliance.
Butt weld fittings dominate the main process piping because they give a full-penetration weld, no flow restriction and full ASME B16.9 dimensional interchangeability. They are the default for NPS 2 and above in any hydrocarbon, steam or high-pressure service.
Socket weld fittings are still the right call in small-bore, high-pressure instrument and drain lines up to NPS 2, where the socket gives a natural fillet and helps resist vibration fatigue. Threaded fittings belong in utility air, firewater ring mains and low-pressure lubrication, where speed of installation matters more than weld integrity.
Field rule of thumb: if a fitting sits in a line that will be hydrostatically tested above 25 bar and is NPS 2 or larger, default to BW. SW and threaded are for specific, justified cases — not for the whole plant.
Material grade then follows the line class: A234 WPB for carbon steel, A403 WP304/316L for stainless, B366 WPNC (C70600 / C71500) for copper-nickel sea-water service, and B564 Inconel / Monel for hot, acidic or chloride-rich process streams.
Flange selection is the most over-specified and under-thought part of a piping package. Most projects default to ASME B16.5 weld-neck raised face because it is a safe universal choice — and then overpay for flanges that the service does not need, or worse, under-specify the ones that carry the real risk.
A practical project decision tree looks like this:
| Service condition | Recommended flange | Typical facing |
|---|---|---|
| General hydrocarbon, low to medium pressure | Weld Neck, ASTM A105 | Raised Face (RF) |
| High pressure steam, hot oil | Weld Neck, A182 F11/F22 | RF or RTJ |
| Stainless process, hygienic or low-carbon | Weld Neck, A182 304/316L | RF or RTJ (chlorides) |
| Seawater, marine cooling | Copper Nickel Flanges, EEMUA 234 90/10 | RF, composite gasket |
| Low-pressure utility, firewater | Slip-On or Lap Joint, A105 | FF or RF |
| Dead-end service, frequent maintenance | Lug-type with through-bolting | RF |
Steel flanges from a single mill with full traceability (heat number, MTC to EN 10204 3.1, NACE MR0175 when sour service applies) remove roughly 80% of the documentation friction at receipt inspection. Mixing flange sources is the most common cause of mismatched traceability at site.
The biggest reliability failure we see in field service is not the wrong valve type — it is the right valve in the wrong duty. A gate valve used for throttling erodes within a quarter. A globe valve used for isolation triples the operating torque and slows down every turnaround.
Lock the valve function first, then pick the body:
Material follows the line class the same way fittings do: WCB / LCB for carbon, CF8M for stainless, duplex for chloride-bearing or offshore service, alloy 20 or Inconel for acid and hot oxidising media. Always confirm NACE MR0175 / MR0103 whenever the line contains H₂S above the NACE partial-pressure threshold — this single check eliminates the majority of sulfide stress cracking incidents in valve bodies and bonnets.
Even a perfect flange and valve package leaks if the gasket, stud bolt and nut set is wrong. The fastest improvement most projects can make is to specify the sealing kit at the same time as the flange, not as a follow-on purchase order.
Tying the bolting grade to the flange grade and the gasket to the facing eliminates the most common cause of joint leakage — mismatched torque values from a mixed bolting kit.
The real benefit of sourcing pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves from a single manufacturer is not price — it is the package. One MTO, one MTC bundle, one delivery sequence, one packing list, one point of accountability for short shipments, wrong items and on-site queries.
What a clean project package should look like at site:
— MTC per heat, EN 10204 3.1, cross-referenced to the line class and the MTO item number.
— PMI report for every stainless and alloy item.
— NACE MR0175 compliance statement where the line class requires it.
— Dimensional check on a sample basis (typically 10%) against ASME B16.5, B16.9 and B16.34.
— Hydrostatic and seat test certificates for every valve to API 598 / ISO 5208.
— Gasket, stud bolt and nut traceable to the same project as the flanges and valves they seal.
When this document set arrives as one PDF per line class instead of 20 emails from 8 suppliers, receipt inspection stops being a bottleneck and commissioning moves on schedule.
EZ Steel Industrial has been building project-level piping packages for refineries, power plants, offshore yards and EPC contractors since 1994. If you have an MTO you would like reviewed against the line class, or a tender you would like a bundled quotation on, send the file to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. Our engineering team will respond with a specification review and a delivery plan within one working day.
