On most process lines, the industrial valves you order today will still be in service a decade from now, which is exactly why spec-first procurement beats catalog-first procurement every time. This walkthrough shows how an experienced buyer locks down valve selection, mates it correctly with pipe flanges and pipe fittings, and uses a bundled-package supply model to take risk out of the supply chain.
The single biggest cause of valve replacement in the first 24 months is a mismatch between the valve body and the actual service envelope. Pressure, temperature, fluid phase, and ambient environment decide everything else — body material, trim, seat type, end connection, and the standards the valve has to meet. If those five numbers are wrong, the rest of the spec is decoration.
A practical envelope looks like this:
With those numbers fixed, the candidate list is short and the standards conversation is much simpler. API 600, API 602, and API 6D cover most hydrocarbon lines. API 603 covers cryogenic. ASME B16.34 sets pressure–temperature ratings, and ASME B16.10 / B16.5 lock down face-to-face and flange dimensions. For sour service, NACE MR0175 is mandatory. For offshore and marine, classification societies (DNV, ABS, LR) add another layer.
The catalog feels endless, but most projects run on a familiar seven. Match the type to the duty first, then the model number.
Gate valves give a straight, unobstructed bore and minimal pressure drop, which is exactly what you want on crude oil, gas, and water mains. They are not throttling valves — partial open causes seat erosion and vibration. Specify them for block valves and tie-ins where leakage class A (bubbletight) is required.
Floating and trunnion-mounted ball valves are the default for on/off isolation in oil & gas, LNG, and chemical service. They give bubble-tight shut-off, fire-safe designs per API 607, and quarter-turn operation. For high-pressure gas and subsea, trunnion-mounted side-entry balls with double block & bleed are the working standard.
Globe valves change flow direction over a disc-and-seat, giving accurate throttling. Use them on control loops, bypass lines, and steam service where modulating duty matters more than a straight bore. The trade-off is higher pressure drop and a taller face-to-face dimension.
Butterfly valves are cost-effective from DN150 upward on water, HVAC, and low-pressure hydrocarbon service. Resilient-seated designs fit water; metal-seated high-performance designs handle hydrocarbon and steam. They are not a substitute for ball or gate valves where zero-leakage isolation is required.
Swing, dual-plate, and lift check valves stop reverse flow that could damage pumps, compressors, and meters. On long pipelines, specify non-slam designs to avoid water-hammer damage during pump trip events. For pump discharge, a non-slam axial-flow check is often the safest default.
Pressure safety valves (PSV) and pressure relief valves (PRV) are mandatory on fired vessels, separators, and any system that can be blocked in with a heat source. Sizing must follow API 520 / API 521. Each PSV needs a certified nameplate, capacity certificate, and a defined test bench.
Control valves (globe or rotary type with positioner, I/P, and actuator) regulate flow, pressure, level, or temperature. Sizing is done with Cv calculations and chosen based on rangeability, noise, cavitation, and characteristic curve. Mis-sizing a control valve by even 20% can make a loop un-tuneable.
Body and trim selection is where most specification errors happen. Use the table below as a starting point, then confirm against the fluid data sheet and process conditions. EZ Steel Industrial supplies valves in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy 20, duplex, and copper-nickel bodies, with full material traceability and MTC documentation.
| Service / Fluid | Typical Body Material | Typical Trim | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crude oil, gas, refined hydrocarbons | WCB / LCC carbon steel | 13Cr / SS316 overlay | Confirm NACE MR0175 if H2S is present |
| Sour service (H2S > 50 ppm) | LCC / LCB carbon steel | SS316 / Alloy 825 trim | Mandatory NACE MR0175 compliance |
| Seawater, marine cooling, shipbuilding | 90/10 or 70/30 copper-nickel | Cu-Ni trim | Match to EEMUA 234 / ASTM B466 |
| High-temperature steam, boiler feed | WC6 / WC9 alloy steel | Stellite hard-facing | Confirm creep ratings at design temperature |
| Chemical, acidic service | CF8M (SS316) / Alloy 20 | Alloy 20 / Hastelloy | Confirm media composition and chloride content |
| Cryogenic (LNG, ethylene) | LCB / austenitic stainless | SS316 / monel trim | Impact test at -196°C per BS 6364 |
A valve is only as good as the joint around it. A mismatched flange rating or the wrong gasket kills more valves than bad metallurgy ever has. This is also where most project supply chains fail — the valve arrives on time, but the pipe flanges, gasket stud bolt nut assemblies, and matching pipe fittings arrive weeks later from different mills.
Three things to lock down before ordering the joint package:
On oil & gas, power, and marine jobs, the most expensive part of procurement is not the unit price — it is the rework, the missing gaskets, and the wrong-grade studs that arrive on site. EZ Steel Industrial runs a project-centric bundled supply model that delivers the valve, the matching pipe flanges, the pipe fittings, and the gasket stud bolt nut package as one shipment, with one set of mill certificates, one delivery date, and one point of accountability.
The same package model also covers the upstream piping itself. Carbon steel pipe in ASTM A106 / A53 / API 5L grades, stainless steel pipe in TP304 / TP316, copper-nickel for marine service, and the heat efficiency tube assemblies for boiler and economizer service all roll out of one production cycle with consistent documentation.
Bundled supply cuts the typical site-side coordination work by more than half, because the buyer is not chasing five different mills for five different RFQs. Quality, delivery, and traceability stay in one chain from melt to site.
A serious valve supplier will hand over a complete test dossier with every shipment. At a minimum, request:
EZ Steel Industrial has been supplying industrial piping packages since 1994. The valve line is matched to the company's wider product range — carbon and carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloys, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and gasket stud bolt nut assemblies — so a buyer can source an entire bolted-joint assembly from a single mill, with a single quality system certified to API, EN, ASME, and ISO 9001.
For projects in oil & gas, petrochemical, power, marine, and large infrastructure, the bundled approach also gives the engineering team one consistent set of material certificates and one point of contact for any field issue. That is the difference between a procurement transaction and a procurement partnership.
Need industrial valves, matching flanges, fittings, and bolting for an oil & gas, power, or marine project? EZ Steel Industrial delivers a project-ready bundled package from one mill, with full API / EN / ASME documentation.
