Forged Pipe Fittings · Field-Proven Sourcing
On a hydrocracker unit start-up I watched last year, a 1-inch instrument connection failed at the root because a thread sealant had been re-used after a hot torque. The line was re-routed with a single socket weld fittings elbow, gap-spaced per ASME B16.11, and has not been touched since. That is the entire reason these fittings exist, and why procurement teams keep coming back to them for the right applications.
Despite the steady migration toward full-penetration butt welds in large-bore process lines, socket weld fittings remain the default choice for small-bore, high-pressure branches. The geometry is brutally simple: the pipe slides into a precision-machined socket, the installer leaves a controlled expansion gap, and a single fillet weld locks the joint. The result is a leak-tight, vibration-tolerant connection that can be hydro-tested, insulated, and forgotten.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, we have been forging these components for over three decades out of our 500-person facility in Changsha, China. With an annual capacity above 480,000 tons across the wider pipe fittings portfolio, we keep Class 3000, 6000, and 9000 SW fittings in dimensional stock so a typical RFQ turns around inside five working days, not five weeks.
Procurement rarely happens in a vacuum. You are weighing one fitting type against the line, the fluid, the maintenance regime, and the welder availability on site. The table below distills the engineering trade-offs we walk buyers through every week.
| Selection Driver | Socket-Weld (SW) | Threaded (NPT) | Butt-Weld (BW) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical size range | NPS 1/8" – 4" | NPS 1/8" – 4" | NPS 1/2" – 48"+ |
| Pressure ceiling (ASME B16.11) | Up to Class 9000 (~2250 psi) | Up to Class 3000 | Unlimited (B16.9) |
| Leak path | Fillet weld + expansion gap | Thread sealant | Full-penetration groove weld |
| Vibration tolerance | Excellent | Poor (loosens over time) | Excellent |
| Field installation | Moderate skill, single weld | Lowest skill, no weld | High skill, multi-pass |
| Disassembly | Difficult (cut out) | Easy (unthread) | Permanent (cut out) |
| Best fit for | Instrument manifolds, steam traps, sample lines, chemical injection | Low-pressure water, air, temporary lines | Main process runs, large bore, high-temp |
Procurement tip: If your pipe is NPS 2" or smaller, the operating pressure is above 750 psi, and the line sees thermal cycling or vibration, SW will almost always beat NPT on total cost of ownership, even after the welding labor is added.
Our SW catalog covers the full ANSI/ASME B16.11 geometry library. Each forging is produced from certified billet, heat-treated, and dimension-checked against the standard's bore, socket depth, and wall-thickness tables before it leaves the press line.

For buyers who also need the matching line pipe, we cross-supply from the same carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe inventories, so the chemistry, the heat number, and the MTC chain stay consistent from fitting to flange.
Material selection is the single biggest driver of fitting life. We stock and forge the grades that appear in the most repeat RFQs we receive from EPCs, refineries, and shipyards.
| Material Family | Common Grades | When Buyers Specify It |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | ASTM A105, A350 LF2 | Hydrocarbon service, general process, low-temp |
| Stainless steel | ASTM A182 F304, F316, F321, F347 | Chemical, food, pharma, coastal utilities |
| Alloy steel | ASTM A182 F11, F22, F91 | High-temp boiler, superheater branches |
| Duplex / super duplex | ASTM A182 F51, F53, F55 | Seawater, sour service, chloride stress cracking |
| Copper-nickel | 90/10 & 70/30 to EEMUA 234 / ASTM B466 | Marine cooling, firewater, shipbuilding |
Every forging leaves the floor with a 3.1 MTC under EN 10204, and our ISO 9001-certified lab issues full traceability for PMI, hardness, and hydrotest results on request.
A clean datasheet is the fastest way to lock a price. We use this five-line template with our regular buyers; it works equally well for one-off RFQs and multi-year framework agreements.
Field note on the expansion gap: ASME B16.11 calls for a 1.6 mm (1/16") gap between the pipe end and the socket shoulder. Skipping it is the most common cause of socket cracking on thermal cycling. We pre-machine every socket to that tolerance, and our dimensional inspection report confirms it batch by batch.
Over the past five years our SW forgings have shipped into several of the same flagship programs our pipeline works line serves. Three examples illustrate the range:
Most buyers we work with do not need only a fitting. They need the joint, the joint traceable end-to-end, and the joint shipped on a single BoL. That is why our project desks treat pipe flanges, gasket stud bolt nut kits, and the SW fittings as one package. The wins are tangible:
If you are sizing an instrument manifold, a steam trace take-off, or a small-bore chemical injection header, send us your datasheet. Our engineers will return a clean quote inside two working days, with material options, pressure class recommendations, and a packaging plan that matches your site schedule.
