EZ Steel Industrial 路 Buyer's Guide 路 2026
A spec-driven procurement playbook for EPC piping leads, refinery TA coordinators, food & beverage OEMs, pharmaceutical utility buyers, FGD system engineers, and seawater cooling procurement teams —covering eight standard families, eleven material grades, six hygienic surface-finish codes, and a single-mill single-MTC supply model.
What this guide does
Walks a stainless steel pipe buyer from RFQ to delivery. By the end you should be able to (a) pick the correct ASTM / EN / JIS / GOST / GB/T standard for the duty, (b) match the material grade (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 310S, 904L, duplex 2205, super-duplex 2507) to the corrosion environment, (c) specify the right surface finish for hygienic or sanitary service, (d) require the correct EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 MTC, and (e) avoid the five recurring procurement traps that derail stainless shipments.
"Stainless steel pipe" is a four-dimensional decision: standard (ASTM / EN / JIS / GOST / GB/T), grade (austenitic / duplex / ferritic), manufacturing route (seamless / welded / cold-worked / HFW / ERW), and finish (mill / pickled / BA / polished / electropolished). A 316L pipe ordered for a pharmaceutical clean-utility loop is not the same commodity as a 316L pipe ordered for a refinery overhead condenser —even if the chemistry, OD, and wall thickness are identical. The first needs ASTM A270 / EN 10357 surface finish, the second needs ASTM A213 / ASME SA-213 with solution-anneal and eddy-current testing.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing austenitic and duplex stainless tubular products since 1994, with eight product categories, 68 product records, an annual capacity above 480,000 tonnes, and mill-direct coverage of the four ASTM pressure-pipe standards (A312, A249, A269, A270), three EN pressure-pipe standards (EN 10216-5, EN 10217-7, EN 10312), plus JIS G3463, GOST 9940 / 9941, GB/T 14976, and GB/T 13296. That breadth is what makes a single-mill single-MTC bundled supply model feasible for international EPC and OEM buyers.
Most procurement teams focus on a single standard because their engineering specification names only one. In practice, the same service can be ordered under at least three equivalent standards, and a mill-direct supplier should be able to dual- or triple-certify to keep the BOM simple.
| Service | Primary ASTM | Primary EN | Primary JIS / GOST / GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-temp / general corrosion pipe | A312 / A312M | EN 10216-5 (SMLS) / EN 10217-7 (welded) | JIS G3459 / GOST 9940 / GB/T 14976 |
| Boiler / superheater / heat-exchanger tube | A249 / A213 / A269 | EN 10216-5 / EN 10217-7 | JIS G3463 / GB/T 13296 |
| Sanitary / hygienic / food-pharma tube | A270 | EN 10357 / EN 10312 | DIN 11850 / SMS 3008 / ISO 2037 |
| General-service tubing | A269 | EN 10217-7 | JIS G3448 / GOST 9941 |
| Structural / mechanical tube | A554 | EN 10296-2 | JIS G3446 |
Stainless is a corrosion-alloy family, not a single material. The right grade is dictated by chloride content, pH, temperature, oxidising vs reducing chemistry, mechanical loading, and fabrication route. The table below collapses eleven common grades to a one-line service description.
| UNS / Grade | Typical service | PREN (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 304 / 1.4301 | Building services, water, food contact (low-chloride), architectural. | 18-19 |
| 304L / 1.4307 | Welded 304 service where post-weld heat treatment is impractical; 0.03 % C max. | 18-19 |
| 316 / 1.4401 | Marine atmosphere, mild chemical, 2-3 % Mo upgrade of 304. | 24-26 |
| 316L / 1.4404 | Pharma, biotech, food & beverage welded tubing; 0.03 % C max for A262 Practice E. | 24-26 |
| 321 / 1.4541 | Refinery hot piping 425-850 °C, Ti-stabilised against carbide precipitation. | 17-19 |
| 347 / 1.4550 | Refinery and hydrocracker service above 425 °C, Nb-stabilised. | 17-19 |
| 310S / 1.4845 | Furnace tubes, radiant tubes, 25 % Cr / 20 % Ni for 1050 °C scaling resistance. | 25-27 |
| 904L / N08904 / 1.4539 | Sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic acid; FGD absorber loops; seawater handling. | 34-36 |
| Duplex 2205 / S32205 | Seawater cooling, FGD absorber spray, oil & gas piping; PREN 35-36. | 35-36 |
| Super-duplex 2507 / S32750 | Hot seawater, severe chloride; PREN 42-43. | 42-43 |
| 254 SMO / S31254 | Seawater plate heat exchangers, bleach plants; 6 % Mo super-austenitic. | 42-44 |
PREN rule of thumb
Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. Below PREN 25 you are in the 304 / 316 territory. Once chloride + temperature push you above 60 °C in a closed loop, target PREN 35+ (duplex 2205) and PREN 42+ (2507 / 254 SMO) for hot chloride and seawater service.
Each route has a cost premium and a service envelope. The wrong choice is one of the most expensive mistakes a stainless buyer can make.
Produced by hot-extrusion or hot-piercing followed by cold-rolling / cold-drawing. Used for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical-service piping. Common under A312 (SMLS), EN 10216-5, GOST 9940, GB/T 14976, GB/T 13296. Wall-thickness tolerance is tight (typically ±10 % for A312, ±12.5 % for older specs). Cost premium over welded: 30-60 % depending on grade and size.
Formed from strip and welded by Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Plasma Arc (PAW), High-Frequency Welding (HFW), Electric Resistance Welding (ERW), or Laser. The weld seam is the limiting feature, so welded pipe is qualified by 100 % radiographic or eddy-current testing plus solution anneal. Common under A312 (welded), A249, A269, A270, EN 10217-7, EN 10312, JIS G3459. Wall-thickness tolerance typically ±10 %.
Cold-drawing of welded or seamless pipe to thin wall with very tight dimensional tolerance. Used for instrumentation, sample lines, impulse lines, and chemical injection. Common under A312, A269, EN 10216-5 TC1 / TC2. Tolerance on OD can be ±0.5 % or tighter.
Quick rule
If your design code allows welded, specify welded. The cost premium of seamless over welded at the same OD × wall × grade is typically 30-60 %, and welded pipe in austenitic grades is fully acceptable for ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.4, EN 13480, and PD 5500 service —provided the weld is fully solution-annealed and NDT-tested.
When the pipe meets food, beverage, dairy, biotech, or pharmaceutical product, the inside surface finish is a regulatory specification —not a marketing attribute. ASTM A270 introduced three roughness codes; ASME BPE added finer granularity. A mill-direct supplier should be able to provide a Ra reading measured along the tube axis per ASME BPE or ISO 4287.
| Code | Finish description | Typical Ra (渭in / 渭m) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mill finish (A270 unpolished) | As-welded, pickling only | 30-45 渭in / 0.76-1.14 渭m | Process drain, non-product contact |
| A270 SF1 | Mill finish | 鈮?40 渭in / 鈮?1.01 渭m | Sanitary, non-product |
| A270 SF3 | 180-grit mechanical polish ID & OD | 鈮?30 渭in / 鈮?0.76 渭m | Dairy, beverage, oral-product contact |
| A270 SF4 | 240-grit mechanical polish ID & OD | 鈮?20 渭in / 鈮?0.51 渭m | Pharma process, biotech upstream |
| ASME BPE SF2 (PL) | Mechanical polish + electropolish | 鈮?20 渭in / 鈮?0.51 渭m | Pharma purified water, CIP |
| ASME BPE SF6 (PL) | Electropolished, high-purity | 鈮?15 渭in / 鈮?0.38 渭m | WFI, semiconductor UPW |
The mill test certificate is the only contractual document that proves what you actually got. Stainless buyers should refuse any 2.1 or 2.2 certificate for pressure or sanitary service.
Pitfall 1 —Ordering A312 when the spec calls for A270
A312 pipe can be installed in a pharmaceutical clean-utility loop, but its mill surface finish (roughness 30-45 渭in) will fail an incoming Ra audit. If the loop is WFI or purified water, the A270 SF4 / BPE SF2 minimum is 20 渭in and the supplier must show a per-lot Ra report. Specify A270, not A312, for any product-contact line.
Pitfall 2 —Accepting 2.1 or 2.2 MTC for pressure or sour service
A 2.1 certificate is a marketing document. A 2.2 certificate has no lot-traceable test data. For any ASME B31.3 process piping, PED Cat I-IV, sour NACE, or cryogenic service, require EN 10204 3.1 minimum and 3.2 for the categories above. Ask the mill to identify the issuing QA officer by name in the certificate.
Pitfall 3 —Mixing 304 and 304L in welded assemblies
304 (0.08 % C max) is sensitised by welding in the 425-850 °C heat-affected zone and fails ASTM A262 Practice E (Strauss). 304L (0.03 % C max) is the welded alternative. If you must use 304 because of cost, specify post-weld solution anneal (1040-1100 °C) and a documented A262 Practice E pass. Otherwise default to 304L / 316L.
Pitfall 4 —Choosing duplex 2205 above 250 °C
Duplex 2205 is strong and chloride-resistant, but the austenite-ferrite balance shifts above 250 °C and the 475 °C embrittlement window opens at 280-500 °C. For high-temperature refinery or hydrocracker service above 250 °C, switch to austenitic 321 / 347 / 310S, not duplex. Duplex 2205 is for ambient-to-250 °C seawater, FGD, and brine service.
Pitfall 5 —Specifying a tight delivery without locking MTC and NDT
A 4-week delivery for a 316L A312 Sch 40S order in a non-stock size forces the mill to expedite at the cost of skipping solution anneal or skipping ECT. Lock the MTC, the IGC test, the hydrotest, and the ECT in the PO before agreeing to the schedule. A late delivery with a clean 3.1 certificate is cheaper than an on-time delivery with a 2.2 certificate.
Stainless tubular is one of the highest-margin segments in the metal-service centre channel, and a stockist's premium over the mill book price is 20-35 % for 304 / 316 and 25-45 % for 904L / duplex. For a 200-tonne order the stockist premium alone can fund a free third-party inspector on every lot.
| Cost / lead-time dimension | Mill-direct (single-mill single-MTC) | Stockist (warehouse broker) |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price, 304 / 316L A312 Sch 40S | Book price; negotiable on > 50 t lots | +20-35 % over book; flat pricing on small lots |
| Lead time, stock grade / size | 4-6 weeks (production + anneal + NDT + ship) | 1-3 days ex-warehouse |
| Lead time, non-stock grade / size | 6-10 weeks for 304 / 316, 8-14 weeks for 904L / duplex | 6-10 weeks —same as mill, with extra handling |
| MOQ | 5-20 t per size; negotiable on small orders with surcharge | 1 piece, cut to length |
| MTC traceability | Single-mill single-MTC; one heat number per lot | Multiple heat numbers mixed, traceability breaks if not requested |
| Third-party inspection | Can be scheduled into the production window | Hard to coordinate; tends to be skipped |
| Logistics | FOB / CIF / DDP directly from mill port | Stock-to-buyer warehouse; often an extra leg |
For pressure tubes and process piping under ASME B31.3, the bundled-savings model —pipe + pipe fittings + pipe flanges + industrial valves + gaskets and stud bolts under one PO and one MTC family —is the largest single source of value. A 200 t project running this way typically saves 8-15 % on the total piping-package cost compared to line-by-line procurement from separate vendors.
Most EPC and OEM buyers do not realise that a single mill heat can ship under four equivalent standards, all on one 3.1 certificate. EZ Steel Industrial's stainless range is qualified to dual- or triple-certify the same heat under the most common combinations, which removes the "you will have to buy a separate heat for EN 10216-5" penalty.
| Common dual-cert combo | Service | Buyer benefit |
|---|---|---|
| A312 / EN 10216-5 (seamless) | Process and high-temp piping | One heat serves both ASME and EN projects |
| A249 / EN 10217-7 (welded) | Boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger | One heat covers both ASME and EU pressure |
| A269 / EN 10312 (welded) | General-service tubing, water, building services | Single MTC for export to both markets |
| A270 / EN 10357 (sanitary) | Food, beverage, dairy, pharma | One heat for hygienic lines on both sides of the Atlantic |
| A213 / GB/T 13296 (seamless) | Boiler and heat-exchanger (Asia / EU) | Domestic China + export in one heat |
| JIS G3463 / A249 (welded boiler) | Boiler and heat-exchanger (Japan / US) | Japanese + ASME projects from the same stock |

FAQ 1. Can I substitute 304L for 304 in welded A312 pipe?
Yes, and you usually should. 304L is the welded-friendly upgrade of 304 —0.03 % C max avoids chromium-carbide precipitation in the 425-850 °C heat-affected zone and removes the need for post-weld solution anneal in most ASME B31.3 services. Specify 304L unless the design specifically requires 304 for high-temperature strength above 600 °C.
FAQ 2. A312 or A270 for purified-water and WFI loops?
A270 is the right standard for any product-contact or purified-water line. A312 will pass pressure, but it will fail the Ra audit because the mill surface roughness is 30-45 渭in, above the 20 渭in (SF4 / BPE SF2) requirement. Specify A270 SF4 or ASME BPE SF2, with a per-lot Ra report and 3.1 MTC.
FAQ 3. Duplex 2205 or 316L for hot seawater?
Duplex 2205 for service above 60 °C continuous in seawater; 316L below 60 °C. The PREN crossover is at about 25-30 °C in clean seawater for plain 316L; chloride pitting becomes a real risk above this and 2205 (PREN 35-36) becomes the economic choice. Above 80 °C continuous, switch to super-duplex 2507 (PREN 42-43).
FAQ 4. What is a realistic mill-direct lead time for non-stock 316L A312 Sch 40S?
6-10 weeks production + 4-6 weeks ocean freight to most major ports for orders above 50 t. If the size is in the mill's standard production range, lead time compresses to 4-6 weeks; if it is a one-off size or a heavy-wall schedule, 8-12 weeks. Stock 304 / 316L in common NPS can be 4-6 weeks at most mills with a 50 t MOQ.
FAQ 5. Do I need 3.2 MTC if my service is not sour and not nuclear?
3.1 is the legal minimum for ASME B31.3 and PED Cat I-II. For PED Cat III-IV, sour NACE MR0175, cryogenic, nuclear, offshore DNV, and any service where the buyer's insurance requires independent witness, insist on 3.2 with a named third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, DNV, Lloyd's Register). The added cost is 0.3-0.6 % of the pipe value, but it shifts liability for material integrity to a third party.
