A practical, engineering-grade reference for procurement teams sourcing stainless steel pipe for boilers, heat exchangers, fluid transport, and structural service.
If you have ever been handed a piping-class specification that lists five different standards and nine alloy grades, you already know that buying stainless steel pipe is less about picking a tube and more about matching alloy chemistry, dimensional standard, and test regime to a real service environment. The wrong choice rarely fails on day one — it fails on month forty, in a chloride-rich condensate line, in a weld heat-affected zone, or at a flange interface that was never properly specified.
This guide is written for the people who actually have to live with the order: EPC procurement engineers, OEM buyers at boiler and heat-exchanger fabricators, plant maintenance leads, and trading-company sourcing teams. It draws on more than thirty years of mill-side experience at EZ Steel Industrial, a Chinese manufacturer shipping into the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, petrochemical complexes, and marine newbuildings.
Stainless steel is not a single alloy — it is a family of iron-chromium-nickel systems whose corrosion behaviour is dominated by chromium content (passive film), nickel content (austenite stability), and molybdenum content (chloride pitting resistance). When you write a purchase order, you are really specifying a corrosion envelope.
Rule of thumb: 304 covers roughly 80% of general-purpose stainless service. 316/316L is the default upgrade the moment chloride, brackish water, or chemical cleaning agents enter the picture. Duplex (2205, S32205) becomes the right answer when you face both chloride stress-corrosion cracking risk and a thinner-wall pressure design.
A mill that ships the same tube under three different standard numbers is not selling three different products — it is selling one heat of steel whose paperwork and tolerances fit three different procurement cultures. The four families you will meet in international RFQs:
A common procurement trap: requesting "ASTM A312" and receiving tubing actually produced to A249. The chemistry is the same, but the test regime, the marking, and the MTR format are not. Specify the standard by name, and ask the mill to print it on the MTR.
Modern welded stainless tubing has come a long way from the early-2000s reputation for unreliable pressure service. With 100% radiographic or eddy-current testing of the seam, ASME-graded welded stainless steel pipe routinely meets the same pressure ratings as seamless — and at a 20-35% cost advantage. The decision is no longer a quality question; it is an application question.
A mill test certificate (EN 10204 type 3.1 or 3.2) is not a formality — it is the legal record of what you bought. When you receive material, the document should let you independently verify that the heat of steel you specified is the heat of steel you received. Minimum fields to check:
| Field | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Standard & grade | Matches your PO exactly (e.g., "ASTM A312 / TP316L") |
| Heat number | Traceable to the steelmaker, not just the tube mill |
| Chemical composition | Heat analysis from ladle; product analysis optional |
| Mechanical properties | Tensile, yield, elongation, hardness (if specified) |
| Hydrostatic test | Pressure and hold time; or NDT substitute permitted? |
| NDT report | Eddy current / ultrasonic / radiographic as per standard |
| Dimensional check | OD, wall, length, straightness |
| Surface condition | Pickled, annealed, polished — matches the PO |
If any of those rows arrives blank, or with "see attached" but no actual attachment, push back. At EZ Steel, every heat-numbered heat ships with a full 3.1 MTR in English, plus optional third-party inspection from SGS, BV, TÜV, or Lloyd's for project-critical orders.
The same tube can move through three or four hands before it reaches your warehouse. Each hand adds 8-20% to the cost, and each hand adds risk that the MTR lineage blurs.
Best for: project tonnage above 5-10 tons per item, custom sizes, special grades, or orders with detailed QA requirements. Lead time is longer (typically 30-60 days for production plus 20-30 days for ocean transit), but the price is the lowest in the chain and the MTR is unambiguous. EZ Steel runs its own tube mills covering austenitic and duplex grades, with a 480,000-ton annual capacity and strategic inventory in the most common ASTM A312 and A213 grades.
Best for: urgent MRO orders, small quantities, cut-to-length needs. The premium is real (often 15-25%), but the lead time drops to days. A well-run stockist holds A312 TP304/304L/316/316L in SCH 10 through SCH 80 across the common NPS range.
Useful for one-off consolidated shipments (pipe plus pipe fittings plus pipe flanges plus gasket stud bolt nut kits), but the technical support is usually limited to order coordination, not alloy selection. Confirm the actual producing mill behind the MTR before you sign.
A pipe is only as good as the joint that ends it. The most common procurement mistake is to source the tube from one supplier and the fittings from another, then discover the two have different standards, different surface finishes, or different trace records. A project-centric bundled approach saves time and reduces warranty risk.
Before you send the RFQ, lock down these eight items. Each one resolves itself at mill-direct and stays a problem at stockist and trader level.
If your RFQ already includes these eight lines, the quotes you receive will be 90% apples-to-apples. If it doesn't, expect the lowest bid to be missing half of them — and the headache to begin the day the shipment arrives.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing steel tube and pipe in Hunan, China since 1994, with current capacity above 480,000 tons per year and an in-house QA lab certified to ISO 9001. The stainless steel product line covers pressure tubes, pipeline works, and structure works in ASTM A312, A213, A249, A269, A554, EN 10216-5, EN 10217-7, EN 10296-2, EN 10312, GB/T 14976, GB/T 13296, JIS G3459, JIS G3463, and GOST 9940/9941.
Beyond the tube itself, EZ Steel can ship a fully matched piping package: pipe fittings (BW, SW, threaded), pipe flanges in steel and copper-nickel, gaskets and stud-bolt-and-nut sets, and industrial valves. One MTR lineage, one shipment, one point of contact — the way piping procurement should work.
For routine replacement and project tonnage alike, request a quote by sending your specification sheet to export@ezsteelpipe.com or calling +86 731 8870 6116. Standard ASTM A312 TP304/316L inventory is held for fast delivery across the most common NPS 1/2" through NPS 12" range.
