How to choose the right stainless steel pipe for oil & gas, petrochemical, power, food & pharma, marine, and structural service — and what to verify on every shipment from a mill-direct Chinese supplier.
A search for "stainless steel pipe" returns thousands of products, but most procurement problems — wrong grade, wrong standard, mixed tube-and-pipe shipments, MTC traceability gaps — start long before a PO is placed. They start with a buyer who never clarified whether the line service requires a true pipe (ASME B36.10/19 sizes, pressure-rated) or a tube (heat-exchanger fin-wall, tighter tolerances).
This guide is built around EZ Steel Industrial's eight standard stainless steel pipe product lines — covering ASTM A213, A249, A269, A312, A554, EN 10216-5, EN 10312, JIS G3463, GB/T 13296, and GB/T 14976 — so a buyer can match a real grade and a real standard to a real service, then verify it on a mill test certificate.
In the stainless steel world, "pipe" and "tube" are not synonyms. Conflating them is the single most common mistake in cross-standard procurement:
| Attribute | Stainless Steel Pipe | Stainless Steel Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensional basis | NPS (nominal pipe size), ASME B36.10 / B36.19 | Exact OD × wall, in mm or inch |
| Typical standards | ASTM A312, A358, A778, EN 10217, JIS G3459 | ASTM A213, A249, A269, A554, EN 10216-5, JIS G3463 |
| Primary use | Fluid / gas transport at line pressure | Boilers, heat exchangers, condensers, instrumentation, structural |
| Tolerance | Looser OD, schedule-driven wall | Tighter OD, ID and wall tolerances |
| Pressure rating | Defined by schedule (Sch 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) | Calculated from exact OD and wall |
If your line is a process pipe carrying corrosive fluid at line pressure, you need a pipe — typically A312 / A358. If your line is a boiler tube bundle or a heat-exchanger tube sheet, you need a tube — typically A213 / A249. EZ Steel's stainless steel pipe catalog covers both, but they ship under different MTC formats and different inspection regimes.
Austenitic grades make up roughly two-thirds of all stainless steel production. They are non-magnetic in the annealed condition, have an FCC crystal structure, and combine excellent corrosion resistance with good formability and weldability. EZ Steel's austenitic pipe line covers:
Ferritic stainless steels have a BCC structure, are magnetic, and resist stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride environments better than austenitic grades — useful in hot water tanks, exhaust, and certain chemical services. They are not the headline grade for EZ Steel's pipe catalog, but they appear in structural applications where chloride exposure is a concern.
Martensitic stainless is heat-treatable to high hardness, used in valve internals, pump shafts, and cutlery. It is rarely a pipe-body specification; if a buyer is offered "410 stainless pipe" for a chloride-bearing line, that is almost always the wrong grade.
Duplex (2205 / S31803) and super-austenitic (904L, 254SMO) grades close the gap where standard 304 / 316L fails. EZ Steel supplies 904L and the duplex family through its nickel-alloy sister line (Monel, Inconel, Ni-Cu alloys to ASTM B163 / B407), and can cross-quote from copper & nickel alloy when the line is seawater or sour service.
A "pick the cheapest 304" approach works until the first chloride-induced pit. Below is the grade-to-service matrix that the EZ Steel technical team uses when reviewing RFQs:
| Service environment | Recommended grade | Common standard on EZ Steel line |
|---|---|---|
| Potable water, food, dairy | 304 / 304L (1.4301 / 1.4307) | ASTM A312, EN 10312, GB/T 14976 |
| Pharma, biotech, sanitary CIP | 316L (1.4404), electropolished ID optional | ASTM A270 / A269, EN 10312 |
| Coastal / marine atmospheric | 316L or 316Ti (1.4571) | ASTM A312, EN 10216-5 |
| Seawater cooling, shipbuilding | Cu-Ni 90/10 or 70/30 (cross to nickel alloy) | EEMUA 234, ASTM B466, BS 2871 |
| Chemical, sulfuric / phosphoric acid | 904L (1.4539) or 254SMO | ASTM B677 / B673 |
| Oil & gas, refinery, high-pressure process | 316L / 321 / 347 dual-certified | ASTM A312, A358, EN 10217 |
| Power plant boiler / superheater | TP304H, TP316H, T91 (ferritic) | ASTM A213, A249, JIS G3463, GB/T 13296 |
| Structural / architectural | 304, 316 (mechanical tubing) | ASTM A554, EN 10296-2 |
Rule of thumb: if the MTC lists 304 but the service is chlorinated water above 60 °C, chloride pitting becomes the dominant failure mode. The same line in 316L — where 2–3% Mo gives pitting resistance — typically lasts several times longer. The 1.5–2× cost premium on 316L is almost always cheaper than one unplanned shutdown.
A pipe that is dual-certified to ASTM and EN lets a buyer ship the same heat to a US refinery and a German chemical plant without re-stocking. EZ Steel routinely certifies the same stock to multiple standards so the same batch can move between regions without re-testing:
| Standard family | Common specifications on EZ Steel stainless line | Region most often applied |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM / ASME | A213, A249, A269, A312, A358, A554, A778 | North America, Middle East EPC, ASEAN refinery |
| EN (Europe) | EN 10216-5 (seamless), EN 10217 (welded), EN 10312 (water), EN 10296-2 (mechanical) | EU process plants, water utility, structural |
| JIS (Japan) | JIS G3459 (pipe), JIS G3463 (boiler tube) | Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Southeast Asia |
| GB / GOST | GB/T 13296 (boiler), GB/T 14976 (fluid), GOST 9940, GOST 9941 | China domestic, Russia / CIS, Belt & Road EPC |
When the order says only "stainless steel pipe to ASTM," ask whether the buyer means A312 (seamless / welded / cold-worked for high-temp corrosive service), A358 (electric-fusion welded for high-temp), or A778 (welded, low-pressure). The same word — "stainless pipe" — covers three different inspection regimes.
Mill test certificates are not all the same. EN 10204 defines the four types — 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2 — and only 3.1 / 3.2 are independent of the manufacturer. For pressure or sour service, request:
A good stainless steel pipe order is not a price decision; it is a paperwork decision made before the price is asked.
A stainless pipe order that goes through a trading house typically passes through two or three handovers, each adding 4–10% to the price and adding one more place where MTC paperwork can be quietly substituted. A mill-direct order from a producer like EZ Steel Industrial (founded 1994, 500+ employees, annual output 480,000+ tons) goes from heat number to shipping mark under one quality system — ISO 9001 lab, API / EN / ASME-certified pipe, and ASTM, AWS welding certifications.
For a project order that also needs pipe fittings (BW / SW / threaded), pipe flanges (steel / copper-nickel), and gaskets, a single mill-direct package removes the MTC-fragmentation problem entirely: every item on the BOM is traceable to the same project file, with one set of 3.1 certificates.
