Practical field guidance from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL — helping specifiers and buyers choose the right stainless steel pipe for pressure, fluid transport, and structural service without overpaying or under-specifying.
A quick search for "stainless steel pipe" returns a wall of grades, standards, and suppliers. Most articles settle on a single grade (such as 304/316 or a specialty like 321) and walk through chemistry and applications. That helps in theory, but it rarely helps a buyer match a real service condition — boiler feedwater, shipboard seawater, hygienic process line, structural handrail — to the right combination of standard, manufacturing route, and complementary components.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, we have been manufacturing and exporting industrial steel products since 1994 from Changsha, China. With eight product families, more than 480,000 tons of annual output, and 500+ employees, we ship bundled piping solutions to power, petrochemical, marine, and construction buyers in over 40 countries. This guide distills how our specifiers and project engineers actually pick a stainless steel pipe — starting from service condition, not from a grade name.
The fastest way to overpay on stainless is to ask "give me 316L" before defining the service. We work backwards from four questions:
Fluid or environment: water, steam, chemicals, seawater, food/dairy, or structural load only?
Temperature & pressure: ambient, cryogenic, or sustained high temperature (above 400°C)?
Welding & fabrication: heavy shop welding, field welding, or no welding at all?
Code & jurisdiction: ASME, EN, GOST, JIS, GB, or project-specific specs?
Only after those four answers do we lock the standard and the grade. For example, a buyer needing hygienic process piping (food, beverage, pharma) does not need 316L throughout — they need a standard like ASTM A270 or EN 10357 with documented surface finish, orbital weldability, and traceable MTRs. A buyer with a shipboard seawater cooling line does need 90/10 or 70/30 copper-nickel, not 304/316.
For pressure tubes under boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger service, the most common standards on our shop floor are ASTM A213 (seamless ferritic/austenitic), ASTM A249 (welded austenitic), and EN 10216-5. We routinely supply TP304H, TP316H, TP321, and TP347H for high-temperature creep resistance, and 1.4301/1.4404/1.4571 per EN for European power and chemical projects.
For general fluid transport — water, oil, gas, chemicals — the workhorse is stainless steel pipe to ASTM A312/A312M (seamless, welded, cold-worked austenitic), ASTM A269/A269M, EN 10312, GB/T 14976, JIS G3459, or GOST 9940/9941. A312 covers most refinery and chemical service; A269 is the default for high-purity and instrumentation tubing; EN 10312 is the European water-transport standard.
| Service Condition | Recommended Standard | Typical Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler & superheater tubes (high temp) | ASTM A213 / EN 10216-5 | TP304H, TP316H, TP321H |
| Process & refinery piping | ASTM A312 / ASME B36.19M | TP304/L, TP316/L |
| Shipboard seawater cooling | EEMUA 234 / ASTM B466 / B543 | 90/10 Cu-Ni, 70/30 Cu-Ni |
| Hygienic process (food, dairy, pharma) | ASTM A270 / EN 10357 | 316L, surface finish Ra ≤ 0.8 μm |
| Structural / architectural | ASTM A554 / EN 10296-2 | 304, 316 |
| Welded heat-exchanger & condenser | ASTM A249 / A269 | TP304, TP316, TP321 |
For pressure tubes and high-temperature service, seamless remains the default — hot-rolled or cold-drawn, with full NDT (eddy current, ultrasonic, hydrostatic). We produce seamless stainless to ASTM A213 and EN 10216-5 with heat treatment, dimensional inspection, and per-piece MTRs.
For fluid transport and structural service, welded pipe (TIG, plasma, laser) is often the more economical choice, with weld bead controlled, solution-annealed, and 100% radiographed. Our welded A312, A249, and A269 lines are built around ASME B36.19M dimensions, and we run solution annealing in line to restore corrosion resistance in the weld zone.
Pipe alone rarely solves a project. Every pressure-boundary line we ship is paired with the fittings, flanges, bolting, gaskets, and valves that complete it. That bundled approach is what lowers the total cost of ownership on a real project: one supplier, one MTR set, one shipment, one point of accountability.
Stainless steel pipe to ASTM A312/A213 (seamless or welded)
Pipe fittings — butt weld fittings, socket weld fittings, or threaded fittings depending on size and pressure class
Pipe flanges — steel flanges to ASME B16.5 / B16.47 or copper nickel flanges for marine service
Gasket, stud bolt & nut sets matched to flange class and fluid
Industrial valves — gate, globe, check, ball — aligned to the same ASME/EN standard
A good stainless steel pipe is not just the chemistry on paper — it is what shows up in the mill test report. Our standard MTR set covers:
Heat number, grade, UNS designation, and standard reference (ASTM/EN/ASME/JIS/GOST/GB)
Chemical composition with C, Cr, Ni, Mo, Ti, Nb as applicable
Mechanical properties: tensile, yield, elongation, hardness
Hydrostatic test pressure or 100% NDT coverage (eddy current / UT / radiographic)
Dimensional inspection: OD, wall, ovality, straightness per ASME B36.19M
Surface condition, heat-treatment state, and pickling/passivation record
Our advantage in stainless is breadth, not just one grade. We hold inventory on ASTM A312/A213/A249/A269, EN 10216-5/10312, GB/T 14976/13296, JIS G3459/G3463, and GOST 9940/9941 — and we can pair every line with the matching fittings, flanges, bolting, gaskets, and valves from the same mill network. Customers who previously ran five separate POs for one project now run one.
Our track record on landmark projects — South-to-North Water Diversion, West-East Gas Pipeline, marine vessel piping for Asian and European shipyards, petrochemical plant retrofits in the Middle East — shows up in the same way on every shipment: documented standards, real heat numbers, and a single project manager accountable for the bundle.
